2.4.1 Classifications of Language Style<br />
Mc Crimmon (1972) categorizes language styles into three common types;<br />
they are formal, informal and colloquial style.<br />
1. Formal style<br />
The characteristics of formal style are: (1) Sentence: relative long, complex in<br />
structure, extensive use of parallel and periodic structure, and no fragments; (2)<br />
diction: extensive vocabulary, learned words, often abstract, avoidance of<br />
contractions and clipped words;(3)tone: impersonal, dignified, few, references to<br />
reader;(4) distance: considerable.<br />
2. Informal style<br />
The characteristics of informal style are: (1) sentence: medium length (twenty to<br />
thirty words), chiefly standard sentence, frequent parallel and some periodic<br />
sentences, fragments rare but occasional; (2) diction: ranges from learned to<br />
colloquial, but mostly popular from abstract to concrete, occasional contractions<br />
and clipped words, and some slang: (3) tone: ranges from personal to impersonal,<br />
usually addresses the reader as you;(4) distance: moderate.
