What is the bus priority package?
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has been
working with local councils to make plans to make bus
journeys better by:
• making more buses arrive on time
• making bus services more reliable
• making buses travel from a wider area across Greater
Manchester, into Manchester city centre.
The plan is to make bus routes better between:
• Leigh
• Atherton
• Middleton
• Parrs Wood and
• Manchester city centre
This will reduce the need for passengers to change buses
and walk between city centre stops when travelling from
one place to another.
This will also help people make a journey by using
different forms of public transport (like Metrolink trams
and trains).
TfGM will be looking to spend over £100 million to make
the changes, which will create 25 miles of bus routes
across Greater Manchester.
This will be the biggest amount of money spent to make
the bus network better in a long time.
This will add to the money TfGM has already spent on
the Quality Bus Corridor scheme, which made other
important bus routes in Greater Manchester better.
What are the benefits of the scheme?
It will make bus journeys faster, arrive on time and more
reliable so journeys will be better for passengers.
This will make it easier and better for people to use buses
to get to work, schools and colleges, GP’s surgeries, and
shopping and leisure.
Bus
Stop
Page 3

The plans will also help bring in more money to make
businesses better because more people can travel to
places by bus.
What changes would be seen along the
routes?
Because the buses will get better, more people would
want to use them.
More than 8 miles of new bus lanes will be introduced
either on or at the side of existing roads.
There will be some sections of road – such as Oxford Road
near the universities and hospital site and certain places
within Manchester city centre – that will be closed to
general traffic with access allowed only to buses, hackney
carriages (Black Cabs), emergency vehicles and bicycles.
Road layouts and traffic signals will be improved to help
reduce traffic jams and work will be done to stop cars and
vans from parking and unloading goods in some places.
Parking bays for people who live and go shopping in this
area will also be put in place along parts of Rochdale
Road.
Plans are being made to make roads better in residential
areas of Moss Side along Lloyd Street and Cambridge
Street to try to stop drivers who do not live in these
places from using the roads as a short cut.
How will this affect bus services?
The plans cover some of the busiest bus routes in Greater
Manchester.
TfGM is talking to bus operators to make sure that the
future bus services which run along them meet the needs
of all passengers.
For example, the plans will help buses to travel more
easily through Manchester city centre, so that passengers
do not need to change buses (if they need to do so), and
walk between city centre stops.
This will help more people to get to their destination in
one bus journey.
TfGM will keep working with bus operators to agree which
bus services will run along the routes.
Bus timetables, plans of routes and bus fares and ways a
person can buy a ticket if they need to do so will also be
put in place as the plans are made.
The services will not run as often in the evenings and on
Sundays.
TfGM will be able to say what the bus fares and
timetables will be shortly before the new bus services
begin.
How will these proposals affect car
drivers?
The plans are to make Greater Manchester’s bus network
better without causing too many problems for people
who drive cars and lorries.
For people who drive cars there will be:
• better traffic signals to make sure that these help cars
to keep moving at busy times of the day (rush hour)
• bus lanes ending before junctions so that it will be
easier for people who drive.
This will help people who drive pass through road
junctions and traffic lights quickly.
There will also be new road signs installed to help
motorists find the best way to their destination.
Help shape the future
Get involved by 24 December 2009
Shaping the future of bus travel
You may have seen these plans before.
In 2009, TfGM did some work to find out what people
thought and their ideas about some of these plans.
We used some of the things people told us to help make
these plans.
Since then – as well as working with local councils and
bus operators – TfGM has talked to residents, businesses,
universities and hospitals along the bus routes to find out
more about what the plans could help to make better.
TfGM now has the money we need to do the work.
Although some work along these routes can already be
seen – such as the guided busway junctions at Sale Lane
in Tyldesley, and Newearth Road in Ellenbrook, much
more work will be taking place over the next three years.
Page 9

Permission
OPEN AS
USUAL
What happens next
TfGM already has some of the necessary powers and
permissions we need to start this work. Powers means
local councils have said we can do the work.
There will be more consultation with local residents,
businesses and communities on the full plans in the
coming months because TfGM still need to get permission
to do some of the work.
Once all the plans have been discussed, TfGM will start to
carry out the work in stages to make sure that everyone
can get on with their day to day business as much as
possible.
All work will be finished in 2015.
