Lady Indians Roll Over Don
Bosco, Waterloo-Christian
By Emily Mennenga
Clarksville 59, Don Bosco 47
Clarksville stomped Don Bosco
on Tuesday, January 8.
The Indians controlled the tempo
throughout the game. They were

quarter.
Don Bosco outscored the Indians
in the second and third quarter, but
they couldn’t conquer the robust
Indians.

strong as they glided to a 59-47 victory
over the Dons.
Coach Huck was proud of his
team’s effort.
“This team can play many different
styles. Early in the game, we
allowed their defensive pressure to

we could break it whenever we
wanted,” he said.
Hannah Poppe led the Indians
with twenty-four points. Poppe
is currently second in scoring in
the Iowa Star North Conference,
averaging 14.2 points per game.
Kimberly Wedeking scored doubledigits
with eleven points.
Wedeking stated, “The funnest
part of this season so far is winning
the games as a team. Our good
defense, hustle, ability to push the
ball, and teamwork led to our victory.”

points, six steals, and six assists.
Backer holds the school record for
most career assists, and she continues
to add to that record every
game.
Tayler Maiers had six points.

and eleven rebounds. Emily Mennenga
hit a three pointer. Belle
Vance and Hannah Thompson each
made a free throw.
Krista Mennenga commented,
“We did a good job on defense and
knowing which of their players
are shooters, rebounders, or ballhandlers.
I have enjoyed winning
games and sack lunches from the
parents this season.”
Huck also added, “Every player
has the desire to be good. They are
also willing to try new things. You
either have intelligence and intensity
when you play or you don’t.
We have it.”
Clarksville 66, Waterloo-Christian 22
Clarksville took on Waterloo
Christian on Friday, January 11,
blowing them out of the water 66-
22.

quarter when they put up sixteen
points against the Regents’ three
points.
A poor second quarter made Waterloo
think they could hang with
Clarksville.
Coach Huck put some motivation
into the girls during halftime. The
Indians came out of the locker room
with an intense offense and defense
that pushed the lead to 54-20 during
the third quarter.

with a 66-22 victory over Waterloo
Christian.
Huck said after the game, “We
executed good pressure defense tonight
that could be adjusted quickly,
and we attacked the hoop. The girls
played the speed I expected them
to play. We are able to put pressure
on the ball and force them into
mistakes.”
Hannah Poppe led the Indians
with twenty-one points and nine
rebounds. Megan Backer put up
thirteen points and grabbed seven
rebounds. Kimberly Wedeking had
eleven points.

game with seven points and seven
rebounds. Isabella Vance earned six
points. Tayler Maiers recorded four
points.
Maiers commented, “The best part
of the game was coming out in the
second half and pushing the lead.
We stepped our defense and played
more as a team to get the win. I
have enjoyed coming out and playing
as a team the most this season.”
Krista Mennenga added two
points to the score. Emily Mennenga
tallied two points, seven
rebounds,and six steals. Kayla

assists.
Wrestlers Take Second at
SH-BCLUW Invitational
By Hana Gallmeyer and Miss
Friedrichs
Second at SH-BCLUW
On Saturday, January 12, the
Clarksville Indian wrestling team
placed second at the South Hardin-
BCLUW Invitational.

points shy of fellow conference team
Aplington-Parkersburg, with 140.0
and 144.0 points, respectively.
“Almost all of those teams were
2A teams,” said Head Coach Ben
Lovrien, “yet the two best teams
were 1A.”
Junior Dustin Sommerfelt pinned
his way to second place at 120.
Senior Bryce Jacobs pinned his

place at 138.
Senior Zach Bergman wrestled his

Fellow Senior Dalton Ciavarelli
pinned his way to the championship
match at 182, but unfortunatley lost a
close one to Shedenheim of Denver-
Tripoli. Shedenheim is the only
wrestler to have beaten Ciavarelli all
season
Junior Mason Lovrien had an im-

place at 195.
Senior Wyatt Doty wrestled his

Third at Sumner-Fred
On Tuesday, January 8, the
Indian’s wrestling team lost a meet
at Sumner-Fredericksburg to the
Cougars 42-27 and the Don Bosco
Dons 47-25.
This news wasn’t all bad. Several
players still had personal wins.
Senior Bryce Jacobs, who won
9-3 against his Don Bosco opponent,
said, “It was an easy win for
me, but I didn’t wrestle to what I
was capable of.”
Zach Bergman also won his match
14-7, earning almost half of the
team’s points against Don Bosco.
“He was strong and tried throwing
me a lot.”
Dalton Ciavarelli said after winning
his match, he wished he could
have done even better.
“I didn’t do very good. I didn’t
feel I wrestled well.”

Wrestler of the Week
Dalton Ciavarelli
Dalton is 22-3. He has been a good leader in the
wrestling room. Dalton is the type of kid our
younger generations should look up to! Dalton
has an amazing amount of talent! He also recorded
his 100th win at the beginning of December.
wrestler to defeat his opponent, and
felt that he did a good job.
“The kid I had was strong, but I
took care of him pretty easily in the
second period,” said Lovrien.
The team has high hopes for a
successful season. Team members
know that this will require some
hard work and training to achieve
their goal.
“I think we could have done better,”
he said. “We have things to
work on. Right now we’re pretty
injured. Chase Capper is out right
now and Dalton and Bryce are
pretty bruised up,” said Bergman.
Lovrien was hopeful, saying, “...I

Against Sumner-Fredericksburg,
Trevor Fenneman beat his opponent
5-4, and fellow Sophomore Dylan
Ciavarelli pinned his opponent in
Older brother Dalton Ciavarelli
pinned his man in 1:58, and Lovrien
had a quick attack and pin in :44.
Lastly, Senior Wyatt Doty pinned
his opponent in 2:53.
JH Girls Bball
Win Against Tripoli
By Megan Swaggerty
The Junior High girls basketball
team played two games last week,
winning against Tripoli on Tuesday,
January 8, and losing to Nashua-

The junior high girls beat
Tripoli by one point, 41-40.
“The girls are working together
pretty well, they communicate
better on the court, they help each
other out more, and they are work-
ing together for the win,” Coach
Preeshl said.
Unfortunately, the girls couldn’t
keep their winning streak going
when they played the Huskies on
January 10.
This game was close too, but
instead of winning by one point,
they lost by one point, 32-33.
Coach Preeshl stressed that the
girls have worked hard all season
and are continuing to improve.
Won’t Give Up
By Deven Rhoades
With four meets left the Junior
High wrestling team is still persevering,
even with the rough season
they’ve had.
At their last meet which took
place at Waverly Shell Rock on
January 8, Tanner Gilbert and Riley
Cramer each pinned their opponent.
“We’re trying to work on motivating
them to win,” said Chris Arians,
Junior High wrestling coach, “and
teaching them about Clarksville’s
rich wrestling history.”
Even with their scores down, the
Junior High wrestling team manages
to keep their heads up.
“One of their strong points is
that they want to learn the proper
moves,” Arians noted about the
team.
“They need to work on just
wrestling and not overthinking,” he
added.
The boys need as much support
from their community as they can

on a positive note, and would love
to see as many people from Clarksville
at their last meets as they can.

Northeast Iowa Food Bank and
Lutheran Services Re$175,000
from the Walmart Foundation
Waterloo, IA, January 9, 2012
– Northeast Iowa Food Bank today
received a $150,000 contribution to
assist with the purchase of a freezer
for its new facility in Waterloo, IA.
Lutheran Services in Iowa received
$25,000 for its Statewide Necessity
Pantry. The grants – which were
given to the non-profi t organizations
through the Walmart Foundation’s
State Giving Program – will work to
provide hunger relief to families in
need.
“Walmart has been a huge partner
in the fi ght against hunger nationally,
and our Food Bank has greatly
benefi ted from support of the local
Walmart stores. We are excited to
continue this important relationship
for many years to come,” said Barb
Prather, Executive Director of the
Northeast Iowa Food Bank.
“Thanks to this tremendous partnership
from Walmart, LSI is able to
assist families across Iowa who are
facing fi nancial hardship. By providing
basic need necessities, such as
food, diapers, gas cards and hygiene
items, we can keep children and
families safe and stable while connecting
them with resources for selfsuffi
ciency,” said Kaye Englin, Vice
President of Advancement, Church
Relations and Advocacy, on behalf
of Lutheran Services in Iowa.
The grants were presented to
Prather and Englin during a check
presentation ceremony held today
at the Northeast Iowa Food Bank’s
new facility at 1605 Lafayette Street
in Waterloo. During the ceremony,
U.S. Representative Bruce Braley
said, “These important grants will
help the Northeast Iowa Food Bank
and Lutheran Services in Iowa more
effectively continue their mission of
ending hunger in our state. Good
citizenship like this will provide
Funding from the Walmart Foundation
will allow the Northeast
Iowa Food Bank to better serve over
40,000 individuals in a 16-county
are children. The Food Bank administers
six different programs to meet
the needs of the hungry. These programs
include the Member Agency
Distribution program, the Cedar
Valley Food Pantry, the BackPack
Program, Kids Cafe, the Elderly Nutrition
Pantry program. Last fi scal year, the
Northeast Iowa Food Bank distributed
nonprofi t agencies and through the
programs listed above.
“The Walmart Foundation is very
“Through this grant, we are
hopeful that all Iowans in need can
be further served by these two outstanding
organizations.”
The contributions to the Northeast
Grassley expects lively budget debate
By John Jensen
The Grundy Register
DES MOINES — State Rep. Pat
Grassley expects a similar state
legislative session to recent years,
with philosophical differences about
how to spend increased state revenue
likely to dominate headlines.
Grassley, of New Hartford, is
one of two new state legislators
representing Grundy County in
the next two legislative sessions.
The other is Senator Bill Dix, of
Shell Rock, who was recently
elected Senate Minority Leader.
Both legislators represent the entire
county after 2012 redistricting
moved Sen. Tim Kapucian and Rep.
Lance Horbach out of the area. Dix
was contacted on multiple occasions
over a two-week time period for
this story but was unavailable for an
interview.
Steadily growing revenue
numbers create a budget situation
unlike Iowa has seen in several
years. That, Grassley said, could
lead to a spirited debate.
“There’s a certain group of people
who think we need to spend every
dollar that comes into the state, and
then where I stand is that money
that’s in the state if we have a
surplus, that needs to be sent back
to the taxpayers,” he said. “I’m not
even concerned how we send it
back, whether it’s an income tax,
property tax … obviously there’s
several options.”
Grassley said one of the worst
things the legislature could do with
the extra money is leave it sitting
there.
“Because whenever it’s sitting in
state government there’s going to be
a tendency to spend that money,” he
said.
The fourth-term Representative
added, however, that the legislature
needs to be cautious in setting
too aggressive a budget. Though
the state’s Revenue Estimating
Conference continues to project
strong receipts, Grassley said the
full effects of last year’s drought on
state fi nances may still not be fully
known.
“Are revenues are good right
now, yes, if we manage the budget
responsibility,” he said. “But we
don’t want to get in the position
where Governor Culver was a few
years back when he did a 10 percent
across-the-board cut for everybody.
That was the most complaints I’ve
heard in the legislature as far as
budgeting. So many people were just
caught off guard. That’s a position
House Republicans don’t want to
lead us into, where we’re spending
every penny and you look back six
months later and say ‘Uh oh, we
can’t fulfi ll our promises.’”
The increased revenue could,
however, allow the legislature to do
a few things that it hasn’t in the last
few years.

“We’re in a position now, after
being responsible the last couple
of years, to maybe have a little
higher allowable growth instead of
being at zero,” he said referring to
budget growth allowed for public
schools. “We’ve always fully
funded (allowable growth) the last
few years, but maybe now we’re in
a position to go up to 1 or 2 percent.
I’m not saying that’s what’s going
to happen, but (the budget surplus)
gives us the ability to look at those
as options and be able to fulfi ll some
of those expectations as legislators.”
Other issues Grassley expects to
see in the headlines include property
tax and education reform, both of
which were issues that Gov. Terry
Branstad campaigned on.
“If there’s anything you can say
about Gov. Branstad the last two
years and I think moving forward,
it’s the issues he campaigned on
he’s made his priorities,” Grassley
said. “And I think, whether you’re
Republican or Democrat, you can
respect that. I think too often we
have elected offi cials who say one
thing and then once they get elected
they have the philosophy that we’ll
worry about that in two years, four
years or whenever the next election
is.”
Regarding property tax reform,
Grassley said most legislators seem
to agree that something should be
done, though different legislators
have different ideas about what
should be done.
“The problem is you have a
mentality of some people who want
to do something just to get re-elected
, they don’t really want to stick
their neck out too far, they want to
do something that looks good on a
brochure,” he said. “When I look at
it, if we’re going to do something
we have to do something that’s bold.
My mentality is we need to come up
with something that truly addresses
the problem or truly starts to work
down that path. Not every decision
is going to be an easy one to make.”
With Republicans still controlling
the Iowa House of Representatives
and Democrats controlling the State
Senate, Grassley said this year’s
legislative session could have a
similar look to those of the past four
years. One concern for rural Iowa,
he said, was that shifting population
has taken some seats from the rural
parts of the state and moved them
into urban center. Grassley himself is
an example of that. After previously
serving in a district composed of 1
1/2 counties, he now fi nds himself
serving all of Grundy County as well
as about half of Butler and Hardin
Counties.
“With redistricting, everyone’s
district in rural Iowa got a little
bigger and everyone’s in urban Iowa
basically got a little smaller,” he
said.”There’s less and less legislators
in these rural areas.”
