The langitang is generally used dur<strong>in</strong>g burial rituals, <strong>to</strong> drive away spirits, and revenge<br />

rituals for a sla<strong>in</strong> <strong>Ifugao</strong>.<br />

The bikkung is a mouth <strong>in</strong>strument made <strong>of</strong> brass or bamboo. It is commonly played<br />

by men and women dur<strong>in</strong>g courtship sessions or at night. The brass bikkung is slightly<br />

th<strong>in</strong>ner than <strong>the</strong> bamboo bikkung but serves <strong>the</strong> same purpose.<br />

The ayyud<strong>in</strong>g and babbong are str<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>struments made <strong>of</strong> bamboo and rattan. The<br />

ayyud<strong>in</strong>g is made <strong>of</strong> a whole bamboo node with <strong>the</strong> str<strong>in</strong>gs carved out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bamboo’s<br />

sk<strong>in</strong>. It is played by strik<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> str<strong>in</strong>gs with a stick. The babbong is a rattan strip<br />

<strong>in</strong>strument usually played by children before harvest time. It is believed <strong>to</strong> hasten <strong>the</strong><br />

ripen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rice gra<strong>in</strong>s. The tadcheng is a similar <strong>in</strong>strument with four str<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

strummed with <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>gers. The guitar has recently become popular for accompany<strong>in</strong>g<br />

songs.<br />

W<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong>struments <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> ungiyong, a nose flute made <strong>of</strong> bamboo. The mouth flute<br />

called <strong>to</strong>ngali has six holes and can be blown from both ends <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> flute. The hupip is<br />

a mouth flute made <strong>of</strong> runo reed. It is as th<strong>in</strong> as a ballpen. These <strong>in</strong>struments are <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

used <strong>to</strong> express one’s personal feel<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

Vocal music covers a variety <strong>of</strong> forms. Men and women, young and old alike, s<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

There are tra<strong>in</strong>ed chanters for rituals and o<strong>the</strong>r social ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>gs, with <strong>the</strong> <strong>people</strong><br />

exchang<strong>in</strong>g comments on <strong>the</strong> chant<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Chant<strong>in</strong>g or s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g is done <strong>in</strong>dividually, e.g., when putt<strong>in</strong>g a child <strong>to</strong> sleep, or, more<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten, as a <strong>group</strong>. The latter have a lead chanter or s<strong>in</strong>ger. Songs learned from o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

tribes or lands are usually sung <strong>in</strong>dividually.<br />

Generally <strong>Ifugao</strong> songs can be classified <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> ritual songs and nonritual songs. Ritual<br />

songs are sung dur<strong>in</strong>g religious occasions; some songs require responses while o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

are extemporaneous. A ritual song is <strong>the</strong> alim. Nonritual songs <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> hudhud, <strong>the</strong><br />

liwliwa, and <strong>the</strong> salidummay. The liwliwa, used <strong>to</strong> express love, protest and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

personal emotions, is sung <strong>in</strong> debate form by <strong>group</strong>s <strong>of</strong> men and women and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

leaders. The salidummay, which can express ideas or emotions, is usually sung<br />

antiphonally by <strong>group</strong>s <strong>of</strong> men and women.<br />

Songs are also known accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>rical period <strong>the</strong>y represent. One song<br />

which narrates <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction <strong>of</strong> land transportation <strong>in</strong> 1930 is about a husband and<br />

wife who traveled by au<strong>to</strong>mobile. Songs about World War II can be easily recognized<br />

because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>the</strong>mes and characters. Songs about love became popular dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

American Occupation, and some have adopted tunes like <strong>the</strong> popular “Leron, Leron<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ta” (Leron, Leron Beloved).<br />

Danc<strong>in</strong>g has always been part <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ifugao</strong> life, tak<strong>in</strong>g center stage dur<strong>in</strong>g rituals, religious<br />

activities, and special occasions.
