COVER STORY
International Ch. Hotwire’s Gitalong U
Renegade, CD (ASCA/AKC)-“GADER”
Little did I know when I picked out this cute
little puppy what a gem he would be. In addition,
I never imagined that he would have to
compete for his Obedience titles without a background
in “heeling.”
Gader came into my life at the same time as
something else, less wanted, came to stay with
me- a bum knee that incapacitates me for
months on end, making it impossible to walk
without assistive devices: (canes/crutches/
walkers/casts/braces).
You name it, I was wearing one of those darned
things on any given day, and so I had a problem.
How do we compete in a sport that requires me
teaching a puppy where “heel” is and how to
“gait change with heeling” when I can’t walk
normally, or the same, each day?
Well with practicing “find heel” continuously
,and working him on a limited training
schedule with Barbara Henry, this little guy figured
out what to do , so when we first entered
the ring and “heeled” for real, he won the class,
got his first ASCA Novice leg and went HIT.
He finished his ASCA CD, Spring 2009, in 2
more shows, with some interesting interpretations
of “heel”, but in the ribbons all the way,
and good scores to boot. Showed in AKC, and
he came out like a champ, with a very good
score, and High Scoring First Leg special award
and second place. Unfortunately, for him and
me, once again, I wound up unable to walk normally
and back on a cane for the next 8 weeks
before his next shows. We showed in Dixon last
week of October 2009, he won the class and in
the next weekend at Vallejo, we finished his CD
with a score of 196.5!
Of course, I am very grateful to his breeder and
to Barbara Henry for all her help! What a guy,
my little boy Gader!
Woujie Mailer
Congratulations to you and Gader, Woujie!
