101 Practical Fasting Ideas for Lent by Nick Senger
Fasting, praying and almsgiving are the three penitential practices that we are asked to engage in
during Lent. In addition to fasting and abstaining with the rest of the Church on Ash Wednesday
and the Fridays of Lent, we are also challenged to make individual sacrifices appropriate to our
own spiritual condition. However, before we choose something to give up for Lent, it’s important
to assess our current spiritual state:
Only after asking questions like these are we are ready to decide what to give up or what to add to our lives during Lent.
The following list to be continued in the coming weeks is meant to be an aid in this process. Use it as you need based on
your current circumstances. “Through fasting and praying, we allow Him to come and satisfy the deepest hunger that we
experience in the depths of our being: the hunger and thirst for God.” –Pope Benedict, Lenten message, 2009
1-10: The Usuals:
Give up candy/sweets.
Give up television time.
Give up eating snacks between meals.
Give up or limit soda or coffee.
Give up or limit video games.
Spend more time with family.
Give to the poor.
Do an extra chore each day.
Perform a random act of kindness.
Spend more time in prayer.
• What habits do I engage in that are destructive to my spiritual health?
• To what material things am I too attached?
• What areas in my life are unbalanced?
• To what do I devote too much or not enough time?
11-20: Prayer
Pray a book of scripture using lectio divina.
Attend Mass on a weekday (every day if possible).
Pray the rosary each day, alone or with your family.
Prayerfully read Abandonment to Divine Providence.
Make a special prayer notebook and list all the people in your life who need prayers;
pray for them each day. Add someone new every day.
Learn to pray the Liturgy of the Hours.
Make a commitment to attend Eucharistic Adoration regularly.
Commit to examining your conscience each evening.
Pray the Jesus Prayer throughout the day.

2012 FINE ARTS SHOW
►On March 3-4, St. Wendelin 7-12 grade students displayed
work that had been completed in art class during this school
year at the Spring Fine Arts Show. Each senior, who has taken
four years of art during high school had his/her own personal
display of work he/she has done throughout their high school
art classes. This year’s seniors include Taylor Schreiner,
Kelly Faeth, J.D. Nye, Ben Noel and Abby Holman.
The work was judged by Findlay artist and teacher,
Amanda Kocsis. High school work was judged separately from
junior high work.
Congratulations to sophomore Maddie Statham who
received the BEST OF SHOW ribbon with her artwork titled
“Me Gusta”. The following students received first place
ribbons:

KINDERGARTEN SCREENING
►We are now accepting registrations for Kindergarten for the
2012-2013 school year. St. Wendelin offers all-day, everyday
classes.
Kindergarten Screening will be held, Tuesday, March 13,
at St. Wendelin Parish Hall. Please call the school
(419-435-8144) for more information and to schedule an
appointment. Children must be five (5) years old on or before
August 1, 2012.
Soup and Bread
This week’s Tuesday Soup and Bread, sponsored by
the Prayer Shawl ministry, Peace and Justice team,
Guadalupe Society and the Bi-lingual Bible Study, will
feature our heavenly mother, Mary. Often a source of
misunderstanding for our Protestant neighbors and some
Catholics, Father Barron journeys to the humble remains
of Mary’s house in Nazareth, to the ruins of the ancient city
of Ephesus and to the great Marian shrines of Lourdes and
Guadalupe to explain the Church’s teachings about Mary
as the Mother of God, the Immaculate Conception and the
Dogma of the Assumption. Please join us at 5:30 in the
Parish Hall for an enjoyable meal, 6:00 DVD presentation,
and Vespers at 7:15.
WE WON!
►St. Wendelin Catholic School placed first with the Lego
Robotics at the Innovation Fair held on February 10 at Fostoria
Middle School. Joan Nye Reinhard, Executive Director of the
Fostoria Economic Development Corporation presented a check
for $600 on March 2 to Advisors Mr. Ron Bowerman, Mrs. Susan
Tiell and members of the Innovation Fair Team. Mr. Bowerman
is looking to purchase more robotics supplies and sensors with the
award money.

S.T.E.M.M. SPEAKER SERIES #2
►On February 27, Dr. James Kettinger was the guest
speaker for the S.T.E.M.M. series at St. Wendelin Catholic
School. Dr. Kettinger is the Director of Emergency
Medicine at Henry County Hospital in Napoleon, OH and
previously worked as an attending physician at the student
health services at Bowling Green State University for 18
years. He advised the students on course recommendations
and the study skills and discipline necessary in preparation
for medical school.
Answering questions from the students, Dr. Kettinger
spoke in detail of the challenges and also the rewards of a
career in medicine. Dr. Kettinger commented that he was
very impressed that the students in attendance already had
firm goals and dreams in place for their future in health
care.

Right To Read Week
Right To Read Week was tons of fun this year. The children read
lots of books and took lots of tests. The challenge for the students
during Right To Read Week was to take lots of AR tests on Friday,
March 2, which was Dr. Suess’s birthday. We were trying to help
break the national record of 2,177,586 tests taken on his birthday.
At 1:15 PM, the record was broken. A total of 3,581,992 AR tests
were taken nationwide and we were a part of it all. Our children took
476 Accelerated Reader (AR) tests that day!!! Even our Kindergarteners
took AR tests on Friday. To date, the children have taken a
total of 2,546 tests so far this school year.
We are so proud of our students. They did a great job. We celebrated
the end of Right To Read Week by eating cupcakes decorated
with the Cat In The Hat logo. The cupcakes were made by the 12 th
grade Foods/Lifeskills class. The children were also given Cat In The
Hat hats to wear. Now, let’s keep reading till the end of the school
year!

CPR and AED Training Course
Fostoria Community Hospital will be hosting the American
Heart Association Heartsaver® AED/CPR Course on
Monday, march 12 th at 5:30 p.m. in Conference Center A,
Entrance 2. The CPR and AED training for adults and
children is $50.00.

An Education Opportunity!
After each Mass this weekend, a member of our
team will be presenting an overview of a JustFaith/
JustMatters 6 week module titled “Prison Reform>
Church of the Second Chance”. Hopefully, you
will take one of the flyers, sign up for the class, and
help our Bishops move forth with prison reform
and abolition of the death penalty.
Women’s Discernment Retreat Weekend
The Sisters of Notre Dame invite women (ages 18-
35) to a weekend discernment retreat at the Sisters
of Notre Dame Provincial Center (3837 Secor
Road, Toledo, OH 43623) from March 23-25,
2012. The weekend will include time for personal
and communal prayer, input on discernment skills

Annunciation Radio presents Catholic apologist
and author, Steve Ray, on Monday March 26th,
the feast of the Annunciation and patronal feast
of Annunciation Radio, at 7 PM at St. Joseph's
Church in Maumee. The evening will begin with
the Rosary, followed by Steve's talk on our
Blessed Mother, and concluding with Benediction.

Religious Education News
Our First Eucharist Enrollment is this Sunday, March 11 th at the 9:00 a.m. Mass. Please pray for our 2 nd graders as they
prepare themselves in mind, heart and soul to receive Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament for the first time on May 6th.
Religious Education Penance Service will be held on Wednesday, March 14 th in the chapel at St. Wendelin Catholic
School, not at the Parish as previously stated on the calendar. Our Generations of Faith gathering for grades 4-6 and
families will be held on March 21 st in the St. Wendelin Catholic School cafeteria.

RCIA News
This weekend at the 9:00 Mass, and for the next two weekends, we will be celebrating the First, Second and Third Scrutinies
for those in our catechumenal process who are preparing for initiation at the Easter Vigil. The Scrutinies are also called
“major exorcisms.” They are among the most ancient prayers in the Christian liturgical tradition. The Gospels for the next
three weekends at the 9:00 Mass will be from the “A” cycle, focusing on “The Woman at the Well, The Man Born Blind, and
The Raising of Lazarus.
As early as the second century, Christian communities would help those who had been chosen for Baptism to prepare for
their initiation by laying on hands and by prayers for protection and deliverance from evil (exorcisms). At the beginning of
the third century, Hippolytus told the Christians at Rome to celebrate these rites with catechumens on a daily basis during
the final stages of preparation for Baptism.
Today we continue to celebrate these rituals, convinced that those about to enter into a covenant with God in Christ stand
in need of our prayers for deliverance and protection. We also understand today that our prayers for protection from evil are
not limited to those formally engaged in the catechumenal process. Just as our entire community is called to journey with
the catechumens throughout the Lenten season, we recognize the need we all share for freedom from evil and its effects.
We urge you to prepare for the celebration of the Scrutinies in a personal way by discerning what it is in your own life that
needs to be freed from sin’s bondage. Join in spirit with all in our community who turn to Jesus for freedom from sin and
protection from all evil.
St Jerome Library Books
Dear Friends, we have quite a few books, VHS tapes, and DVDs that have been taken out and not returned for several
months. Please return these items so that others may enjoy them. Thank you.
K OF C FISH FRY The K of C has begun their weekly Lenten
Fish Fry. The fish frys will run from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm.
Dinners remain at their bargain price of $9.00 for super-size,
$7.00 for regular size, and $5.00 for a child’s dinner. Come and
experience a great dinner at a reasonable price, get a chance to
see and visit with old friends, and enjoy the family atmosphere
that the K of C offers. Carryout is available. The Ladies Auxiliary
holds a bake sale during the Lenten Fish Frys, usually in the
council room. All proceeds go toward our scholarship fund.
Youth-Adult Formation!
We are forming a team to begin work on youth ministry for
our parish youth, no matter what school they are presently
attending. If you are interested in helping us explore and
deepen this direction, please contact Stephanie Hunker at
419-619-0502. We are planning an information meeting for
adults who wish to work with the young people on March 15 at
7 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Please pray for the success of our
efforts.

The final weeks’ topics for “New Life Journey”, a DivorceCare,
Inc. program are as follows: Single And Dating (3-11),

Palm Sunday - April 1, 2012 – Spanish Mass
On Palm Sunday, April 1, 2012, there will be a
Spanish Mass at 4:00 p.m. in the Basilica and
National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation with

Reflection for Operation Rice Bowl., March 10 th , 11 th
Maria Idalia Serrano, her husband, and 4 children live in
El Salvador. Fetching water every day was their main
activity. And the water quite often made her and her
community ill. The alms that were given to CRS' Rice Bowl
built a well in her village of El Pedregal. Now 130 families
have faucets that bring clean water right to their homes.
We, here in Fostoria, must remind ourselves about the
importance of water in sustaining a healthy and productive
family. The Catholic social teaching principle being shown
here is the principle of “Rights and Responsibilities” as put
forth by our Church. According to our Bishops, every
person has basic rights including the right to life, food,
water, and shelter. And every person has the responsibility
to support those rights. Let us pray: Extend our alms, O
Lord, to provide clean water and good health to all families
of our world. Amen.

Easter Flower Memorials
We are continuing the tradition of inviting
people to give a memorial donation for Easter
flowers, in order to allow us to decorate the
Church more beautifully. This is an excellent
way for you to remember a loved one. If you
wish to take part in this, please place your memorial gift in
an envelope and mark of whom your gift is in memory.
You may place your envelope in the collection basket at
Mass or drop it off at the Parish Office. A list of names will
be published in the Easter bulletin. All of the memorial
gifts will go to enhance our worship space.
All memorial gifts must be in by Friday, March 30.
Again, we thank you for your support and your care for the
beauty of our church.
Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration
The Spring/Summer cycle of Perpetual Adoration will
begin Sunday, April 1st and will continue until July 28 th .
Sign up this weekend and make a commitment to better
your life through this special devotion. Those committed
to adoring on this current cycle will continue until
Saturday, March 31st. All wishing to make this blessed
commitment (new adorers and/or current) will need to sign
up in the gathering space. Signing up early is encouraged
and much appreciated.
CEMETERY CLEAN-UP
All ground decorations need to be
removed from graves by Monday,
March 26th. Decorations can be put
back starting Tuesday, April 3, in time
for Easter.

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and
steal” (Matthew 6:19)
A benefit to living a simple life is that we don’t have to worry about protecting, caring for or maintaining our
numerous possessions. For example, a person who lives without a car can forget not only about the car but also about
alarm systems, insurance payments, garage doors, interstate traffic, and tire rotations. The more money we spend on
acquiring things, the more money we need to spend on maintaining those purchases. But golden handcuffs-though
made of gold-are still handcuffs, and the desire to possess them will shackle us. This can easily distract us from our
primary task as humans: to love one another. Keeping our treasure simple helps keep our life’s focus simple.
How many of us can give away one “valuable” possession? It might set us free to give something up!
Liberating God, free our hearts from the desire to possess. Create in us a desire for simplicity. AMEN!
