Exodus 20:13
Thou shalt not kill—is the 5 th commandment and it just happens to coincide with the Scripture passage
and the year we are celebrating. Now if I were a fundamentalist, I would say this is God’s way of telling us to stop
killing one another. If I were a normal person, I would call it a co-incident. If I was………..you can fill in the rest.
We were just celebrating January 22, the remembrance day of Roe v. Wade abortion decision which
brought the death of over 50 million babies in the womb. It was also the weekend of remembering the killing of
Martin Luther King, who advocated peaceful resistance. It was also a day for demonstration of gun ownership.
Do you ever get the impression that we are a nation of different ideologies?
What does the church have to offer in this discussion? We look to Jesus for direction. His approach to
violence was to challenge false statements and violent actions. When the soldier slapped him, he turned and
asked him, “If I have spoken wrong tell me, if not, why did you strike me? “ To Pilate, he said, “I could call the legion
of angels but my kingdom is not of this earth. He died a violent death and left with the words, Father; forgive
them they don’t know what they are doing.” He reacted to the desecration of the temple by turning over the tables
and driving the folks out of the temple. He didn’t kill them but let them know what they were doing was wrong.
When Peter drew his sword, he stopped him and re-attached the ear of the man. When asked how often we
should forgive someone, the answer has puzzled all of us since then. 70x70x, or always. It seems impossible for
us, yet that is the standard.
As a Church, we are against killing and, even in self defense, we encourage only the force necessary to
stop the person and, only in extreme situations; when there is no other way is the killing of another condoned.
A good response to the violence in our society could be, what can we continue to do to live in peace with
one another and not escalate the violence? Violence begets violence and peace begets peace. What safeguards
can we provide? What safety features will help us, what laws will limit violence? How can we learn to get along
with one another? Where can we find a common ground?
God bless our efforts.
Peace and Justice by Ronnie Kromer
In one of our JustFaith sessions, I was introduced to a book, “The New Jim Crow”. Its main theme is that we
cannot yet congratulate ourselves on ridding our nation’s society of racism. Racism is not as overt, but more
covert. I believe the book is right on target. But I am a hopeful person, and am willing to try to change things for
the better. In honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I will quote from a commencement address he gave in
1965 to Oberlin College graduates. “There are all too many people who, in some great period of social change, fail
to achieve the new mental outlooks that the new situation demands. There is nothing more tragic than to sleep
through a revolution.”
“Dearest Lord, keep me awake and alert so that I may not just know your words, but am courageous enough to
live them. Amen.”
