Thou shalt not kill—is the 5 th comm<strong>and</strong>ment <strong>and</strong> it just happens to coincide with the Scripture passage<br />

<strong>and</strong> the year we are celebrating. Now if I were a fundamentalist, I would say this is God’s way of telling us to stop<br />

killing one another. If I were a normal person, I would call it a co-incident. If I was………..you can fill in the rest.<br />

We were just celebrating <strong>Jan</strong>uary 22, the remembrance day of Roe v. Wade abortion decision which<br />

brought the death of over 50 million babies in the womb. It was also the weekend of remembering the killing of<br />

Martin Luther King, who advocated peaceful resistance. It was also a day for demonstration of gun ownership.<br />

Do you ever get the impression that we are a nation of different ideologies?<br />

What does the church have to offer in this discussion? We look to Jesus for direction. His approach to<br />

violence was to challenge false statements <strong>and</strong> violent actions. When the soldier slapped him, he turned <strong>and</strong><br />

asked him, “If I have spoken wrong tell me, if not, why did you strike me? “ To Pilate, he said, “I could call the legion<br />

of angels but my kingdom is not of this earth. He died a violent death <strong>and</strong> left with the words, Father; forgive<br />

them they don’t know what they are doing.” He reacted to the desecration of the temple by turning over the tables<br />

<strong>and</strong> driving the folks out of the temple. He didn’t kill them but let them know what they were doing was wrong.<br />

When Peter drew his sword, he stopped him <strong>and</strong> re-attached the ear of the man. When asked how often we<br />

should forgive someone, the answer has puzzled all of us since then. 70x70x, or always. It seems impossible for<br />

us, yet that is the st<strong>and</strong>ard.<br />

As a Church, we are against killing <strong>and</strong>, even in self defense, we encourage only the force necessary to<br />

stop the person <strong>and</strong>, only in extreme situations; when there is no other way is the killing of another condoned.<br />

A good response to the violence in our society could be, what can we continue to do to live in peace with<br />

one another <strong>and</strong> not escalate the violence? Violence begets violence <strong>and</strong> peace begets peace. What safeguards<br />

can we provide? What safety features will help us, what laws will limit violence? How can we learn to get along<br />

with one another? Where can we find a common ground?<br />

ST. WENDELIN YOUTH GROUP<br />

On behalf to the Youth Ministry Department, I would<br />

like to say a really big thank you to everyone in helping<br />

with the Spaghetti/John Basco Movie Fundraiser.<br />

It was a huge hit <strong>and</strong> I could of not pulled it off<br />

if it wasn't for everyone's help. Thank you very much<br />

to all staff, parents, volunteers <strong>and</strong> youth who made<br />

this day possible. (I would take up the entire bulletin if<br />

I named off every single person who was involved in<br />

this event) I would also like to thank everyone who<br />

came <strong>and</strong> supported us either by buying tickets or giving<br />

a donation. I was so happily overwhelmed by the<br />

love <strong>and</strong> care our Church family has for each other,<br />

INNOCENCE & THE DEATH PENALTY<br />

On March 17 th at 6:30 in the <strong>St</strong>.W Church, Fr. Neil Kookoothe<br />

<strong>and</strong> his good friend Joe D’Ambrosio - will tell their incredible<br />

story of how Joe, an innocent man, was wrongly convicted of<br />

murder <strong>and</strong> sentenced to death row; <strong>and</strong> how after, spending 21<br />

years behind bars, because of Fr. Neil’s reluctant intervention,<br />

was finally set free.<br />

K OF C FISH FRIES ARE BACK!!<br />

The monthly fish fry at the K of C has begun. Dinners<br />

are available from 11:00 am - 8:00 pm.<br />

Delivery for large orders <strong>and</strong> carryout is available.<br />

Prices are the same as last year $9 for super size, $7<br />

for regular size, <strong>and</strong> $5 for a child’s meal. Dinners<br />

include fish, fries <strong>and</strong> your choice of either cole slaw<br />

or apple sauce.<br />

We will continue to hold these dinners on the third<br />

Friday of every month until Lent. During Lent we will<br />

have the Fish Fry weekly.<br />

Come <strong>and</strong> join the fun with old friends in a clean<br />

Attention K of C Ladies Auxiliary members:<br />

CHANGING OF BYLAWS will be discussed <strong>and</strong><br />

voted on at our next regular meeting, Tues, Feb 5th,<br />

at 7 pm. Current, paid members, which includes<br />

charter members over 70 yrs of age, will be allowed<br />

to vote. According to current bylaws, members need<br />

to be notified 14 days before the vote. Please try to<br />

attend this important meeting, as it could benefit the<br />

The Auxiliary would also like to extend their<br />

sympathy to the families of members that passed<br />

away in 2012. May they rest in peace; Barb Marley,<br />

Sharon Cool, Clara Miller, Carolyn Derck <strong>and</strong> Liz<br />

Zeyen. After each of these dear ladies went to be<br />

with the Lord, the auxiliary held a short memorial<br />

service <strong>and</strong> draped the charter with a cloth for 30<br />

days in their memory.<br />

<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Wendelin</strong> Cub Scout Pack 450 is in<br />

need of a new pack master before March<br />

1st. Pack master duties include:<br />

scheduling monthly meetings, overseeing<br />

den leaders <strong>and</strong> organizing annual events<br />

such as the Pinewood Derby.

7 th & 8 th Grade Confirmation Bake Sale – After all Masses on the weekend of February 9 & 10. <strong>St</strong>udents,<br />

please bring in your goodies by noon on Saturday, February 9 th . All students who bake <strong>and</strong> work shifts after<br />

Masses will receive <strong>St</strong>ewardship Acts. Parents are needed to help at the Sunday Masses please.<br />

Middle School Rally for Grades 6,7,8 – will be held on Saturday, March 16, <strong>2013</strong> at <strong>St</strong>. Michael the Archangel<br />

It’s time to once again start collecting small 18 oz (1 lb 2 oz) Oatmeal Containers for our First Communion retreat<br />

Loyola University of New Orleans (LIMEX) Classes <strong>St</strong>arting Soon!<br />

Three new LIMEX classes are ready to start up soon in the Diocese of Toledo! Plans are for classes in Norwalk <strong>and</strong> Bowling<br />

Green to start up this April, with an Orientation Session to be held in March. A class in the Ottawa area will begin in<br />

August, with an Orientation Session to be held in July.<br />

The Loyola Institute for Ministry Extension (LIMEX) Program is a part-time, <strong>Catholic</strong> university program leading to a master’s<br />

degree or certificate in religious education or pastoral studies. Interested people include <strong>Catholic</strong> school teachers &<br />

administrators, lay persons preparing for or engaged in lay ministry, deacons, clergy, religious sisters, health care workers,<br />

lawyers & magistrates, etc. LIMEX provides flexible scheduling, enabling students to combine study, family <strong>and</strong> work without<br />

leaving the area. It is also affordable, allowing students to pursue higher education without “breaking the bank”! The<br />

Diocese of Toledo has been sponsoring the LIMEX program since 1996 <strong>and</strong> there are about 50 graduates in our diocese!<br />

In our diocese, new LIMEX classes start up about every 4 years, so if you’re interested in a class starting up in <strong>2013</strong>,<br />

BBQ CHICKEN DINNER<br />

►The local Fostoria restaurant <strong>and</strong> winner of the Ohio <strong>St</strong>ate Fair Rib contest, Dell’s Restaurant, will feature their BBQ chicken<br />

dinner, complete with two sides as part of the Mohawk Club’s fundraiser. Homemade desserts as well as a drink will also be provided.<br />

The dinner will be Sunday, Feb. 10 from 11AM-2PM in conjunction with the SWCS Open House. Dinner will be served in<br />

the school cafeteria or patrons may enjoy carry out as well as drive-up carry out being available through the gym doors located in<br />

the North parking lot.<br />

to provide sweat equity hours to meet the goal of<br />

“New Life Journey”:<br />

Help for the Divorced <strong>and</strong> Separated<br />

The next session of “New Life Journey”, a DivorceCare,Inc.<br />

program of healing <strong>and</strong> recovery<br />

for divorced/separated persons, began its 13week<br />

series on Sunday, <strong>Jan</strong>uary 6 th , <strong>and</strong> runs<br />

through Sunday, March 31st. It will be held<br />

from 6:30pm to 8:30pm in the Upper Room at<br />

<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Wendelin</strong> <strong>Parish</strong>. Each week’s topic is self<br />

contained so you may join the program at any<br />

time. Cost is $20 to cover the cost of the workbook<br />

<strong>and</strong> materials with financial assistance<br />

available. Come <strong>and</strong> join those who know exactly<br />

what you are going through. If you have<br />

Peace <strong>and</strong> Justice by Ronnie Kromer<br />

In one of our JustFaith sessions, I was introduced to a book, “The New Jim Crow”. Its main theme is that we<br />

cannot yet congratulate ourselves on ridding our nation’s society of racism. Racism is not as overt, but more<br />

covert. I believe the book is right on target. But I am a hopeful person, <strong>and</strong> am willing to try to change things for<br />

the better. In honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I will quote from a commencement address he gave in<br />

1965 to Oberlin College graduates. “There are all too many people who, in some great period of social change, fail<br />

to achieve the new mental outlooks that the new situation dem<strong>and</strong>s. There is nothing more tragic than to sleep<br />

through a revolution.”<br />

“Dearest Lord, keep me awake <strong>and</strong> alert so that I may not just know your words, but am courageous enough to<br />

live them. Amen.”
