Sonographers Make Their Way to Music City
for the 2009 SDMS Annual Conference
No matter how many SDMS annual conferences
Mary Whitsett RT(R), RDMS, RVT, of Northampton,
PA, attends, she always leaves having learned
something new.
This year it was a trick from Frank Miele, MSEE,
president of Pegasus Lectures of Forney, Texas,
on how to choose the students who are most
likely to succeed in the sonography program
at the community college where Whitsett is
an adjunct professor. The program is highly
competitive and choosing from among the many
qualified applicants is always difficult, Whitsett
said.
“He suggested a way of testing the students on
problem-solving and spatial resolution,” Whitsett
said. “He explained that they don’t have to tell
you an answer. What’s more important is how
they react to the problem – to see if they’re able
to think on their feet as they would [have to] as a
sonographer.”
The annual conference held at the 3,000-room
Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center
in Nashville Oct. 15-18 had something to offer
not only seasoned professionals like Whitsett, a
clinical ultrasound specialist at St. Luke’s Hospital
Frank Miele offers test taking strategies to Student Concalve attendees.
in Bethlehem, PA, but also student sonographers
like Brigham Turner of Springfield, OH.
Turner, too, was impressed with Miele, whose
sessions he attended during the Student
Conclave Thursday morning. “His last lecture on
test-taking was very informative,” said Turner,
who will graduate from Kettering College of
Medical Arts in Dayton this summer. Turner, who
has already passed the Sonography Principles
and Instrumentation Examination, picked up
several test-taking strategies that will be helpful
when he sits for his specialty registries, he said.
“He told us how to organize our time which is
important,” he said.
Turner, who is also a nurse, also checked out the job
board to get an idea of what might be out there when
he’s ready to find a sonographer position.
The conference was about a five-hour drive for Turner,
who came with four classmates and all four of their
instructors.
While Turner’s trip was relatively short, Debbie Bruce-
Duncan, RT(D), RDMS, had to cross the Atlantic. She
is the only sonographer on the U.S. military base
in Vincenza, Italy, that is home to more than 3,000
soldiers and their families. Bruce-Duncan could
have taken courses and gotten her CMEs online, she
said, but attending the conference also allowed her
to catch up with fellow sonographers and to enjoy
herself. “It’s multi-purpose,” she said. “I get my CMEs
and I get refreshed.” As the only sonographer at her
post, she feels somewhat isolated at times and being
surrounded by sonographers at the conference is
comforting, she said.
By walking the Exhibit Hall between sessions, Bruce-
Duncan also had the opportunity to see what’s new
in the field. “I was very interested in seeing new
equipment because we are opening an enhanced
multi-million dollar health center for the soldiers
and their families next year and it will have all new
equipment,” she said.
This year’s conference was very well attended despite
a down economy by over 1,300 participants. Students,
sonographers and educators sat in on all or part of the
four days of sessions that were offered in four tracks:
abdominal, cardiac, OB/Gyn and vascular sonography.
Attendees came from all 50 states as well as Australia,
Bermuda, Canada, Guyana, South Korea and Trinidad
and Tobago. More than 60 exhibiting companies filled
the Ryman Exhibit Hall, showcasing their expertise,
products and services.
Dawn Fessett, marketing manager for GE Healthcare
women’s health and specialty ultrasound, in
Wauwatosa, WI, said while many companies have
scaled back their marketing because of the recession,
she believed it critical for GE to attend the SDMS
annual conference. “This is our audience,” she said
looking around the Exhibit Hall during the Thursday
night grand opening party. “We can show the students,
our existing customers and potential customers who
are here our technology and its newest features. If they
have questions about the equipment, we can answer
it right here on the floor. It’s nice one-on-one time. We
have models and phantoms that they can use to try
out the new equipment, too.”
Erin P. Owen, RVT, RDMS, RDCS, senior manager of
general imaging ultrasound marketing for Toshiba
America Medical Systems Inc., based in Tustin, CA,
agreed that for vendors, the SDMS conference isn’t
necessarily “a conference to sell, but a conference
to touch our customers. You’ve got to be here,” she
added, “because when it comes to making purchasing
decisions, sonographers are going to give their input.”
Rich Schubert, product sales manager at Biodex
Medical Systems of Shirley, NY, said he came because
he wants feedback from the sonographers who use the
company’s ergonomically designed scanning tables.
“It’s a good way for us to know, ‘Are we doing the
right things?’ Who better than the ones who use it to
provide feedback? Over the years, we have changed
our designs from the direct feedback that we get from
sonographers.”
Michael Cyll, BA/BS, RDCS, RCT, CCRP, FASE, of
Scottsdale, AZ, came because he is about to add fetal
echo to his responsibilities at Scottsdale Healthcare,
“and I wanted to get exposure to it.” It was a whirlwind
trip for Cyll, who flew to Nashville from Rochester, MN,
where he had been attending the Mayo Conference
on Echocardiography in Pediatric and Adult Congenital
Heart Disease. “But I loved it,” he said, waiting for his
turn in the Exhibit Hall for a complimentary massage
provided by Cardiovascular Credentialing International
(CCI.) “I’ve been very impressed with the magnitude
and quality of it. The lectures have been outstanding
and the people have been very friendly.”
Grants from the SDMS Foundation made it possible
for a large number of students and sonographers to
attend this year’s conference; 130 grants of varying
amounts (with a total value of $50,000) were
awarded, it was announced at the awards dinner held
Friday night. One of the grant recipients was Danielle
Costello, who will graduate as a sonographer in May
from Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS. She had
been worried that the conference sessions would
be over her head, but quickly found that was not the
case. “The conference helped bring home many topics
that were hard for me to learn in class,” she said. “It
was like I had an ‘ah-ha’ moment during many of the
sessions I attended. The conference also opened my
eyes as to how many sonographers there are and
how important each and every one of us is. Everyone
was so kind and caring at the conference it was
unbelievable!”
After the awards dinner, many had a fun time at the
“Tennessee Two-Step,” which featured the live country
music of Layne Wrye, and a chance to see SDMS
board members and sonographers, students and their
instructors, having a grand time.
Patricia Williams, RDMS, of Cordova, TN, enjoyed
everything about the conference, especially Victoria
Labalme’s amusing and inspiring keynote address
titled “Crazy, Busy, Nuts: Getting off the Conveyor Belt
of Life.” “I thought the motivational speaker was just
awesome,” said Williams, who attends at least one
professional conference every year at her employer’s
SDMS News Wave October 2009 3
expense. If she can, she said, she chooses SDMS
because “it’s geared toward the sonographer and what
we do.” So, she added, she’s sure she will be back.
Victoria Labalme inspired attendees with her keynote address :Crazy, Busy, Nuts:
Getting off the Conveyor Bewlt of Life”
Labalme was followed
by Kevin Evans, PhD,
FSDMS, who delivered
the Stephen M.
McLaughlin Memorial
Lectureship. His
50-minute talk was
titled: “The Crisis of
Leadership: Relighting
the Volunteer Spirit.”
During his talk, Evans
emphasized the need
for sonographers to get
involved in their profession and SDMS just as, Stephen
McLaughlin, a past president who died of brain cancer
in 2005, had done during his luminary career as a
sonographer.
Many found the time between sessions to take in the
sights and sounds of Nashville, including the Grand
Ole Opry, the Ryman Auditorium, the “Mother Church
of Country Music,” and the Country Music Hall of
Fame.
Next year, the annual conference will be held at the
Hyatt Regency in Denver and the Colorado Convention
Center Oct. 14-17. Many who attended this year’s
conference in the Music City are already making plans
to be in the Mile-High City as well because they want
more of SDMS style hospitality and education.
By Beth W. Orenstein
At the SDMS Annual Conference in Nashville,
attendees could spot not only SDMS president-elect
Joy Guthrie, DHSc, RDMS, RDCS, RVT, RCS, RVS,
ROUB, of Madera, California, but also her daughter,
Allison, of Fresno, who will graduate in December
2010 from the Merced College Diagnostic Medical
Sonography Program.
Allison had started California State University at Fresno
as a business major. Two years in, after going to work
with her mother a few times, she decided she wanted
to pursue a career in sonography.
When they went to work together, Joy, lead
sonographer for Children’s Hospital Central California
in Madera, had explained to Allison what she was
seeing. Allison was impressed and, one day, which
to Joy seemed to be out-of-the-blue, told her mother
of her change in career plans. “My mom asked many
times if I was sure that this is what I wanted to do and
each time I replied ‘yes,’’’ Allison recalls.
Joy is thrilled with her daughter’s decision. “I think it’s
a great field for any young person. It provides a sound
career and advancement opportunities,” says Joy, who
completed her doctorate in health sciences in 2006.
“And it’s always changing.”
SDMS News Wave October 2009 4
Joy is quite proud of her daughter. “Allison has made
a remarkable effort to put herself in the position of
being accepted into the program. She has found her
passion. I sit in awe of her spirit, her drive, and her
commitment at such a young age,” Mom says. “The
first time I held her hand to position it on a patient
correctly tears came to my eyes. Tears of joy… to be
able to share this journey with her. I’m very proud.”
To be accepted at the sonography program at Merced,
Allison needed a bachelor’s degree. So she stepped
up her studies continuing at Fresno and enrolling in
the University of Phoenix, where 16-week courses
are concentrated into five weeks. “Doubling up with
my classes, I quickly graduated with a bachelor’s
degree in business management. This allowed me to
be accepted into the Sonography Program at Merced
College and begin my studies in June,” Allison says.
Joy is not only mom but instructor for Allison. “She
tells me I ruin her life every month because my tests
are so hard,” Joy says with a laugh.
Allison’s version of the story is different: “One night,
I was sitting in bed studying for an exam I had the
next day, I was somewhat confused on what exactly
the test was going to cover. So, I sent my mom a
text message asking her what exactly we needed
to study,” Allison says. “Her response was ‘Study it
all.’ I responded with: ‘You ruin my life,’ to which she
replied. ‘I love you too!’”
Allison says that she and her mom are constantly
joking around with each other, “which makes for a
great mother-daughter relationship and also lightens
up the mood when things get a little stressful with
school.”
Allison says she could ask for no better teacher. “She
is a great teacher,” she says. “Many have said, ‘the
best teacher I could ever have,’ and that is certainly
true. I feel honored to have her as my teacher. One
thing I would like everyone to know is that my mom
has not only been successful as a teacher, in her
career, and in the SDMS, but she has also managed
to be 100% successful in being an amazing mom to
my brothers and me.”
Letter From the President
SDMS President’s Transition:
Continuing Commitment to
Membership Support
During the recent SDMS Annual Conference in
Nashville, Tennessee, I had the privilege of being
sworn into office as the new SDMS President. My term
of office will last through October of 2011. As I assume
the responsibilities of serving as the SDMS President
for the Society, I must first say thank you to the
members, for providing me this opportunity to serve. It
is a humbling experience, but one that I intend to fulfill
to the best of my abilities. I must also acknowledge
the work and commitment of those who came before
me and who have been my mentors, especially our
Immediate Past-President, Shannon Boswell, who did
an outstanding job of guiding the association through
challenging times. The recessionary economy has
created challenges for us all, and the association is not
immune from those pressures. The SDMS membership
has my commitment that I will work to ensure that
the association remains a viable, well-managed
organization responsive to its members needs.
Despite a significant downward trend in participation in
national meetings, the 2009 SDMS Annual Conference
at the Gaylord Opryland was another success.
Attracting over 1,300 participants, the conference
provided excellent speakers and professional
luminaries in all of the sonography specialty areas
including: OB/GYN, Abdominal, Vascular sonography,
and Cardiac sonography. Additionally, the Educators’
Tutorial and the Student Conclave, both held the day
before the conference started, drew record numbers.
The anecdotal comments from participants on-site
were overwhelmingly positive. Comments I heard
personally during the conference reflected the esteem
in which the SDMS Annual Conference is held by
the membership and the professional community.
Attendees told me that they thought, “this was the
strongest meeting yet,” and “I have learned so much
that I can take back to my workplace.”
If you have not had the opportunity to participate in an
SDMS Annual Conference, I would strongly encourage
you to plan on attending next year’s meeting in
Denver, Colorado. The meeting will be hosted at the
Hyatt Regency Denver and the Colorado Convention
Center October 14-17, 2010. This is one of the most
picturesque times of
the year to come to
the “Mile High City.”
Make your plans to be
with us in Denver now,
and I hope to see you
there.
SDMS News Wave October 2009 5
Things that you can
expect to see during
my term of office will
all be referenced back
to the association’s
Strategic Plan. The
Strategic Plan, accessible on the SDMS website at:
www.sdms.org/members/plan.asp, provides the
framework for our decision making. I encourage all
SDMS members to familiarize themselves with the
Society’s Strategic Plan and provide feedback on how
you feel your elected leaders are doing in meeting our
stated goals and objectives. To encourage feedback
from the membership, I have started an SDMS
President’s Blog accessible at: www.sdms.org/blog,
and also maintain a President’s Forum on the SDMS
Discussion Forums at: www.sdms.org/members/
forums.
Specific activities that the membership will see
throughout my term of office, many a continuation of
work efforts started months or even years ago, include:
•
Support for establishing mandatory certification
standards for sonography
• Expand free CME activities in all sonography
specialty areas
•
•
•
•
Ensure that state-based licensure activities
targeted at medical imaging, and including
sonographers, are focused appropriately
Provide continued support for musculoskeletal
injury prevention for the sonographer population
Continue collaborating with other professional
organizations to support our members’ interests
Increase support for the SDMS Foundation to
ensure that members-in-need have a place to go to
for financial assistance
I look forward to maintaining the successful track
record that SDMS is noted for, and expanding the
services and benefits that SDMS members may access
through YOUR Professional Society.

What inspired you to make a career of
sonography?
I casually wandered into this great profession of
sonography in 1974. I graduated from college,
returned from the Peace Corps and the recession
of 1971 was still having an impact. I discovered
the allied health field. I was a very old radiologic
technology student at the time, 24. My sonography
mentor, Belinda Prilliman-Ferguson, was one of
the few people close to my age. I spent as much
time as I could in the sono room. Her company
and the exams she did kept me interested in this
free two-year training I had discovered. From the
moment she taught me how to write my name in
the air with a single transducer, I was hooked. She
did everything – adult echo to ob/gyn. Because
of my interest and Belinda’s great teaching skills I
became her backup as an X-ray student. I was hired
after graduation to work with her. In 1981, Howard
Grundy, the new perinatologist in town, came to
the hospital where I was working to do a consult.
I imaged the patient and we talked. I was one of a
few sonographers in Kansas City with the ARDMS
credential. Dr. Grundy knew 25 years ago that a
sonographer should hold the ARDMS credential. He
asked me to consider working with him at St. Luke’s
Hospital in the new department he was creating.
Today I have my own office, Prenatal Imaging Center,
LLC. Dr. Grundy was one of the many people
that I discussed my new concept with when I created
my office. Being independent allows me to offer
quality diagnostic ob/gyn exams that the uninsured
and underinsured can afford. I schedule plenty of
time for each appointment to ensure the patient
is allowed to see her baby and all questions are
answered. I don’t enjoy rushing or accomplishing
the maximum amount of exams anymore. I found
SDMS News Wave October 2009 11
This is a continuing series of interviews of
our distinguished SDMS Fellow members.
that after 30 years I still love the modality but it’s the
patients I find fascinating. As in other diagnostic offices,
I offer the non-diagnostic 3D exam. I volunteer
this service to a home for pregnant homeless teens
and the Kansas City perinatal hospice. The opportunity
to give of my skills and time is important to me.
What important changes have you seen in the
profession?
I took my first ARDMS exam in 1978. I waited eight
months to get my results from the written portion; it
was manually graded, before I was allowed to take
the oral portion. I sat with a physician and reviewed
films, and then I sat with a sonographer and
critiqued films for the quality and technique. I laugh
just thinking about my quaking body and how kind
the physician was and how tough the sonographer
was. The exam now gives you instant results. It is
truly objective and is now international.
Did you have a memorable role model/teacher?
Who was it?
Dr. Grundy taught me the joy of this dynamic field. He
encouraged me to publish my interesting case studies
and to participate in my professional organization.
Each day was fun and interesting. In 1984, I became
local program chair for the AIUM/SDMS meeting
to be held in Kansas City. This was an introduction
to some remarkable sonographers and the SDMS.
Marveen Craig was the executive director and was in
all the meetings with me. She was the most incredible
advocate. Just watching her was an education
in strength and independent thought. I served on
both the SDMS and ARDMS boards with outstanding
sonographers. The discussions were energetic and
lively but we all had a passion for the profession so
our thoughts and concerns had great energy.
What advice would you give to students/ future
sonographers?
I encourage sonographers to volunteer, communicate
with your elected board about your concerns
and offer your creative thought. Be a dynamic part
of the sonography profession. You will always receive
more than you give. Also, educating the public
as to whom we are and how important it is that the
transducer is held by an ARDMS sonographer is the
most important task we still face.

highlighting Lois Hubbell,
RT(R)(M), RDMS, RVT
from Dodge CIty, KS. Lois
is multi-credentialed and
married with two children,
both of which are currently
in college.
Lois Hubbell has been a
registered sonographer with the American Registry
for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) since
1996. Before she became a sonographer, Lois
SDMS News Wave October 2009 12
worked as a registered Radiologic Technologist for
13 years. Since 2000, Lois has been employed with
C&F Imaging located in Dodge City, Kansas as a
mobile sonographer. She provides services to local
and rural hospitals and clinics.
When we asked what inspired Lois to choose a
career in sonography? She answered, “no one
thing inspired me.” It was just a natural progression
in the field of Diagnostic Imaging.” She started
performing sonography early in her professional
career and has always loved doing it.
Lois joined SDMS in August of this year. We
asked what attracted her to SDMS? Lois replied, “I
knows the SDMS is a highly respected professional
organization and I can utilize the benefits provided,
especially the free continuing medical education
(CME) opportunities and the SDMS CME Tracker.”
At the end of the interview, Lois stated that she is
very satisfied with the value SDMS places on their
members and the benefits offered.
ARDMS Audit Process and the
SDMS CME Tracker
The American Registry
for Diagnostic Medical
Sonography (ARDMS) has
recently sent out CME
‘audit’ letters to randomly
selected Registrants. The
audit letter states the
Registrant must provide
evidence of their completed
30 CME credits if audited.
BUT members of SDMS don’t have to worry about
reporting any completed SDMS CME credit to
ARDMS. As a benefit of SDMS membership, SDMS
automatically transfers all completed SDMS CME
credits into your personal ARDMS transcript through
the SDMS CME Tracker.
