Dear Friends, 

Welcome to our 9th Annual Spring Feast! 

Our heartfelt thanks to the current, alumni and future parents, students, faculty and friends 

who join us to celebrate our school and support its future success. We are part of a tradition 

of excellence that began in 1904 and will continue for many more years. 

Spring Feast is its own tradition that began after 9/11 to celebrate and acknowledge the 

every-day achievements of Stuyvesant High School’s staff and students. Tonight, we begin a 

new tradition: to honor and acknowledge a Stuyvesant High School alumnus’ contributions 

to the school. Twenty years ago, architect Peter Samton (’52) designed the building we send 

our children to every day and is currently helping to improve the library. Please help us to 

celebrate his many professional achievements and commitment to excellence. 

This event is the labor of our dedicated and thorough Spring Feast Chair Alice Fung and her 

committee of current and alumni parents. Rong Cao, Miriam Chan, Fion Tan, and Candy 

Tse have worked for many months behind the scenes. Special thanks go to emcee Dave 

Venderbush. Because of Bryan Babski, Beth Bacon, Bonnie Beacher, George Bogdanich, 

Steven Bloom, Susanne Fischer, Peter Galasinao, Kevin Heisler, Bill Kaczmarek, Julie Law, 

Sarah Park, Sanja Popovic, Chris Ross, and Larry Sit, we have guests, donations, greetings,

Award-winning architect Peter Samton is a 1952 graduate of Stuyvesant High School and 

the architect of the current Tribeca high school building, which opened 20 years ago in 

1992. As a principal at Gruzen Samton • IBI Group, Samton oversees the fi rm’s commitment 

to producing architectural projects that contribute to urban life in a manner that reinforces 

and refl ects the uniqueness of individual communities. Samton has led his fi rm in 

the creation of an architecture compatible with community goals and has forged new stable 

environments in borderline areas. 

Beyond Stuyvesant High School, examples of Samton’s other work include the 72nd Street 

Subway Station Rehabilitation and Addition; Modernization at Grand Central Station; Lerner 

Hall Student Center at Columbia University; the Marine and Academic Center at Kingsborough 

Community College; Jewish Theological Seminary and Library; and the Benjamin 

Rosenthal Library at Queens College. 

Samton is the recipient of numerous awards, including the First Annual President’s Award 

and the Andrew J. Thomas Pioneer in Housing Award, both from the New York Chapter 

of the American Institute of Architects. Samton served as president of the AIA NY Chapter 

from 1978 to 1980. 

After graduating from Stuyvesant, Samton earned his Bachelor of Architecture from MIT 

and an AIA Silver Medal for Scholarship. Samton also studied at the Sorbonne in Paris as a 

Fulbright Fellow.

Stuyvesant High School has assisted countless New York City students in their pursuit

fosters both personal and intellectual growth, Stuyvesant High School instills the intellectual

reflecting the diversity of the City, and you are consistently recognized for your academic

Tonight’s celebration is a commitment and a tribute to the hopes and aspirations of the

The 2012 Spring Feast Student Performers Biographies: 

Stuyvesant High School Jazz Combo, a.k.a. “Banana Soul” 

Spawned from the infamous Stuyvesant Jazz 

Band, Banana Soul is a small collection of 

frighteningly talented musicians whose singular 

aim is to spread gut-wrenching, brainteasing 

music wherever it goes. Originally 

known simply as the Stuyvesant Jazz Combo, 

this ensemble has been dubbed “Banana 

Soul” in recent years as its audience has 

grown in both size and appreciation of the 

group’s musical talents. The band has performed 

at such venues as the Liberty Science 

Center and Gracie Mansion. While Banana 

Soul started out as primarily a jazz ensemble, 

it has since deviated from the conventions of 

standard jazz and its repertoire has expanded to include music based in the traditions of Klezmer, Motown, 

pop, and rock, among others. Consequently, the band’s sound is defi ned by an eclectic blend of many 

musical genres. Banana Soul is comprised of Adam Lieber (piano), Jonathan Lessinger (guitar), Tyler Ross 

(bass guitar), Marc Schramm (trombone), and Andreas Petrossiants (percussion). 

Chinese Fan/Ribbon Dance: 

The Chinese Fan and Ribbon Dance has a long and treasured history in China. Though it began as ceremonial 

rituals; over time, it has evolved into a more cultural dance that tells a story. It is currently a representation 

of beauty, grace, skill, tradition and history. What started out as a group of girls that wanted 

to showcase fan dancing to Stuyvesant High School became something bigger. At fi rst, it was to show 

the pride they had in their culture and heritage, but then it slowly started to evolve. The fan dance started 

to incorporate different moves that were before not used often and became modernized. But, this dance 

showed the personality of the people that choreographed this dance, as well as the characters of the 

people that performed these moves. Because this year is our last year at Stuyvesant, our group hopes to 

give you our own approach to fan and ribbon dancing. Dance directors: Doris Xia and Rebecca Lichi Chan. 

Stuyvesant Squad Step Dancers: 

Stuyvesant Squad Step members include Tajma Hall, Natalyah Morgan, Suzy Kim, Sidney Bynum, Lisa Ng, 

and Kimberly Iboy. 


Stuyvesant A Cappella 

Stuyvesant A Cappella brings music and vitality to 

the Stuyvesant Community. We meet after school 

everyday, and through our daily rehearsals, we 

form strong bonds that extend beyond the doors 

of Stuyvesant. Members of Stuyvesant A Cappella 

not only learn to sing as part of an ensemble; 

they also learn how to perform and exhibit professionalism 

as well. By analyzing and restructuring 

harmonies, we work together to recreate music 

in a form that we can enjoy presenting to others.

Dongala, Sharon Chen, Shaalini Ganesalingam, 

Esmé Cribb, Carolyn Kang, Colleen Fang, Batya 

Zamansky, Julia Cha, Jenny Kam, Emily Koo, Daniel Lee, Gene Gao, Andy Zhang, Haymar Lim, John Yuen, 

Jamie Zhan, Victor Jiao, Ten Young Guh, Marcus Chan. 

The Indian Dance Club 

My name is Antara Majumdar, and I am currently 

a Junior at Stuyvesant High School. When I was 

fi ve years of age, my parents enrolled me into Indian 

classical dancing courses geared to teaching 

youngsters about the complex and well-institutionalized 

dance form called Bharatanatyam. Over the 

years as I have advanced through the many levels, 

I have found a yearning to spread the word about 

this classical art form which has existed since the 

Sagam age 500 B.C. and has survived till today. 

My passion for dance refl ects in my dedication to 

practicing this art form and presenting it in to an 

international audience. Today, as President of the 

Indian Dance Club I hope to collaborate with other 

meaningful projects geared towards humanitarian 

aid to modern ballet dance to intensify the presentation 

of this temple dance. Performing this dance 

is Antara Majumdar and Deepanita Das.
