Please be aware that the principal has proposed dismantling
the current guidance system by next September. You will
find details of his proposal and the PA’s concerns and
recommendations on page 4 of this issue of the Bulletin. Please
forward your comments to the P.A. This would be a radical
change, and while we believe the concept is good, we are
concerned about its execution.
About 500 alumni, parents, and students turned out to hear former English
teacher and Pulitzer prize-winning author Frank McCourt regale audiences with
reminiscences and passages from his new book, Teacher Man, on November 14.
This event was organized by Myra Manning, co-owner of Shakespeare & Co., and
the mother of a Stuy grad. Proceeds benefit the English Department.
We are planning our Stuyvesant College Services Benefit 2006/Lunar New
Year Feast at the now newly renovated Jing Fong Restaurant in Chinatown where
the event was held last year. The event will take place on Friday, March 3. This
year they have graciously offered a Pan-Asian menu that will have Chinese,
Korean, curry and vegetarian dishes. A College Services Benefit Committee has
been formed under the auspices of Fundraising Committee Chair Miriam Boyce
and College Committee Chairs Michele Parker and May Hwa (Tracy) Teng. The
Benefit planning will be led by sophomore parent Suet Mei Chan, who did a
spectacular job organizing our Welcome Picnic in September, and will be
reprising her role as event chair. She will be working with senior parent Hannah
Li, who co-chairs the Family Orientations Committee with Mei, and sophomore
parent Sue Huizinga, our Corresponding Secretary. The event’s Silent Auction will
be led by junior parent HT Wen and freshman parent Deb Kavanah.
Please welcome our new Treasurer, Yong Dong, and Assistant Treasurer Alka
Desai. We are sorry to report that Gillian Smith Robinson, our treasured
Treasurer, had to resign due to the unrelenting demands of serving as principal of
a brand new high school.
We wish everyone a safe, restful, and joyous holiday season.
Best regards,
LETTER FROM THE CO-PRESIDENTS, 2005-2006
Dear Stuyvesant Community,
In this issue of the
Stuy PA Bulletin
Guidance Program restructuring
described by Stuy HS principal
Stan Teitel and Eleanor Archie
and an article about parents’
concerns by PA Co-Presidents
Lauren Coleman-Lochner
Don’t miss pages 4 & 5.
Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
As we begin the holiday season we
also begin the third and final
marking period of the semester.
The grades each student achieves
have a different significance
depending upon their level. For the
Freshmen it is the foundation of a
transcript each student hopes to
build. For Sophomores and Juniors
these grades add additional levels
to a strong foundation. For our
Seniors they represent the last
grades on their high school
transcript for college review. I urge
each parent to encourage and
support his or her child in every
way possible.
On Friday, December 9, report
cards will be issued to each
student. Please take a moment to
review your child’s progress. We
are offering academic intervention
services (tutoring) in all subjects. If
you have any concerns, please
contact the guidance office.
To all our families, I wish health,
happiness and peace this holiday
season.
Sincerely,
Stan Teitel, Principal
CORNER
SENIORS – TOP REMINDERS
By now, decisions on the seniors’ early action
and early decision applications have been
made. For the majority of the class, however,
there is still work to be done. Only Ms. Cleary,
Ms. Siegel , and Ms. Danaher can enter the ED
and EA students’ regular admission choices
into the computer system. It is extremely urgent
that students notify the college office, if they
haven’t already done so, so that transcripts and
other paperwork can be completed before the
school closes for the holiday break.
Financial aid paperwork must also be
completed soon if the student is applying for
aid. Copies of the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form can be
picked up in the college office or downloaded
from the U.S. Department of Education’s
web site (www.studentaid.ed.gov), although
they cannot be mailed or submitted online
By Michele Parker & Tracy (May-Hwa) Teng, College Committee Co-Chairs
until January 1, 2006. Colleges may also
require the CSS Profile (available at
www.collegeboard.com) and their own
institutional financial aid forms as well. The
College Office will send seniors’ seventh
semester grades to all of the colleges to
which they have applied as soon as the
transcripts are available. Students should
not bring Mid-Year Grades or Secondary
School Evaluation forms from individual
college applications to the office unless
requested.
VISITING COLLEGES IN FEBRUARY
The Presidents’ Week break, February 20 to
25, is a great opportunity to visit colleges.
Seniors may want to check out or revisit
schools to which they have already applied.
Juniors and their families may want to get
the process going. Remember to check the
college’s schedule, usually posted as the
TOUR OF MID-ATLANTIC COLLEGES
The second of this year’s school/PA college
tours visits Mid-Atlantic colleges on
February 4, 5, and 6. Financial assistance
is available to those qualifying for the
reduced lunch program. The fee for the trip
is based on the number of students sharing
a room, so friends are encouraged to apply
together. Parent chaperones are also
welcome. Information and applications will
Minutes of the General Meeting of the Stuyvesant HS Parents’ Association, November 15, 2005
1. Co-Presidents Sumiko Takeda
Nakazato and Lauren Coleman-
Lochner started the meeting at
7:00 PM.
2. Sumi mentioned that last night
there was a successful book
promotion by former Stuy teacher
Frank McCourt attended by 500
people. The meeting was
arranged by Myra Manning.
3. Sumi mentioned that PA Treasurer
Gillian Smith had resigned due to
her obligations as a new principal.
Second Vice President Simeon
Baum said that according to the bylaws,
when the Treasurer resigned,
the current assistant treasurer,
Yong Dong, automatically became
the new treasurer. The PA
Executive Board met at an
emergency session today before
the general meeting and voted
unanimously to nominate Alka
Desai, a junior parent currently
working as a finance person at a
corporation, to be the new
assistant treasurer. The general
meeting also unanimously ratified
Alka Desai as the new assistant
treasurer. The Executive Board
had also nominated Young Dong
as the chair of the Appropriations
Committee. His nomination was
unanimously ratified.
4. Lauren announced that next
Thursday evening at 6:30 PM
there will be a presentation by the
Society of Women Engineers in
either at the Lecture Hall A or B.
5. Lauren announced that in today’s
SLT meeting Principal Teitel
presented a proposal to change
the current guidance and college
advising system, and presented
the pros and cons of the proposal.
(See articles on page 4 of this
issue for details.)
6. The minutes of the last general
meeting were approved.
7. Lunar New Year Feast: Fundraising
Chair Miriam Boyce
announced that the Lunar New
Year Feast activities are kicking
off. This community-building event
raises funds for the college office
through ticket sales, raffles, and a
silent auction. Last week the
college office conducted its first
college tour of Northeastern
colleges. Programs such as this
are funded by the PA through
monies raised in events such as
the Lunar New Year Feast. The
committee is now collecting
baskets from parents that will be
filled with goodies to raffle with
themes such as “Pacific Rim,” “Off
to College,” and “International
Food.” Bring sealed items for the
baskets and leave with Peggy
Harvey at the PA office. A location
for the feast is needed to hold
about 500 people and enough
room to conduct the silent auction.
Donations for the Silent Auction
are also being solicited.
8. Programs Chair Gina Anderson
announced that the Programs
Committee meets every month
just before the general meeting
from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Anyone
interested should contact her at
gsa1700@msn.com. She
introduced the evening’s feature
program, “Demystifying Academic
Programming and Online Course
Registration” (see the report
elsewhere in this issue).
9. Principal Teitel spoke about his
proposal to hire 6 new guidance
counselors. (See his article on
page 4 of this Bulletin.)
10. New Business: Parent Amie
Gross asked about interest in
trying to start Russian language
classes and asked interested
parents to contact her.
11. Sumi thanked everybody and the
meeting was adjourned at 9 P.M.
Respectfully submitted, Sam
Siddique, Recording Secretary.

Guidance Department Restructuring
by Stanley Teitel and Eleanor Archie
I have been attending School Leadership Team meetings since
I became Stuyvesant’s Principal in 1999. Over the last several
years, the SLT agenda and discussion topics have been
dominated by issues relating to Stuyvesant’s guidance services:
the Secondary School Report (SSR) writers’ workload, the
number of college advisors, the roles of the grade advisors and
guidance counselors. At the October 25, 2005, meeting, the
members of the SLT asked me to present them with a way of
increasing staff in the College Office. In the days that followed, I
conferred with members of my cabinet and devised a plan that I
announced at the November 15 SLT meeting. The plan involves
a major restructuring of Stuyvesant’s Guidance Department.
The plan calls for the elimination of all guidance-related
compensatory time positions (grade advisors, SSR writers, and
college advisor) by the fall of 2006. In their place, we plan to hire
no fewer than 6 new full-time guidance counselors, so that
Stuyvesant will employ at least 12 full-time members of the
Guidance Department. While I am still working with the College
Office to create a structure that best supports their needs, 6 new
hires will join the 4 current full-time guidance counselors. These
10 counselors will each have a caseload of approximately 300
students. As always, each guidance counselor will be available to
offer emotional support for students who require it. In addition,
though, they will handle the academic advisement traditionally
performed by grade advisors and write approximately 75 SSRs a
year.
This structure offers several advantages that the current one
does not:
• There will be no ambiguity about whom students should seek
out for any guidance-related issues. Rather than having three
separate faculty members to handle different aspects of the
students’ academic and emotional well-being (with all the
ensuing confusion that creates), there will be just one. What’s
more, counselors will be available to address student
concerns all day long, as opposed to the three periods a day
that grade advisors and SSR writers currently hold office
hours.
• Parents will know exactly whom to contact to inquire about
their child’s academic progress.
• Guidance counselors, after having known and advised
students more closely throughout their four years at
Stuyvesant, will be better equipped to write detailed, wellinformed
SSRs. Also, writing 75 SSRs, while certainly timeconsuming,
is more manageable than the 90-plus our current
crop of writers is assigned (on top of teaching three classes
and responding to the work of more than 100 students
apiece).
• There will be many more qualified people to help with
program changes at the beginning of each semester.
• Guidance will finally become a true department, rather than a
collection of teachers borrowed from other departments. This
will allow for regular meetings, increased communication and
greater accountability.
Under the new UFT contract, we are free to hire whomever we
choose. We plan to advertise the positions and, given
Stuyvesant’s reputation, we feel certain that we will have many
qualified applicants. We will create a committee to interview all
serious contenders for the positions and, given the extensive
writing component of the job, the committee will certainly require
that applicants compose sample SSRs. As with any big change,
there will almost certainly be a few bumps in the road at first, but
I am confident that the new structure will quickly allow Stuyvesant
to provide more effective guidance services to its students.
Concerns About the New Guidance Proposal
by Sumiko Nakazato & Lauren Coleman-Lochner
As he explains in this Bulletin [left-hand column of this page], Principal
Teitel recently proposed a complete overhaul of guidance services. The
current system consists of 4 full-time guidance counselors, 7 grade advisers
who ensure that students meet all requirements for graduation, and 8 writers
who produce the Secondary School Reports (SSRs) that serve as individual
student profiles sent to colleges. Teachers generally carry a workload of 5
courses, but grade advisers and SSR writers teach 3 courses each, plus their
guidance duties which account for 40 percent (0.4) of their time.
Together, this is equivalent to 10 full-time positions: 7 grade advisers x
0.4 = 2.8 positions; 8 SSR writers x 0.4 = 3.2 positions; plus the 4 full-time
guidance counselors.
Principal Teitel proposes hiring 6 additional full-time guidance counselors
to the current 4, for a total of 10 full-time guidance counselors. The idea is
that one guidance counselor would follow each student through his/her four
years at Stuy and would produce the SSRs for the students in that group.
The principal estimates that each counselor would have a caseload of about
300 students, 75 per grade. Under the proposal, SSR writers and grade
advisors would return to teaching a 5-course load. Principal Teitel wants the
new system in place by September.
The Parents’ Association believes that giving students one dedicated
counselor for four years would be preferable to the current piecemeal
system. We are, however, extremely concerned about how this plan is to be
implemented.
• A number of teachers, guidance counselors and parents have
expressed strong misgivings about the abrupt way this would be
instituted. Putting two new guidance counselors in place by February,
when neither a committee nor a list of qualifications has been
established, is not realistic.
• At the very least, we feel that the school must maintain the current
system alongside the new one for the current junior and sophomore
classes. We cannot sacrifice the interests of any group of children to
rush into a radical change. Transition problems are not “bumps in the
road” to the individuals affected.
• Given that the majority of the guidance staff will be new to Stuyvesant
and unfamiliar with the school and our college application process, it is
extremely optimistic to believe that the new system would be
functioning smoothly when this year’s juniors start applying to colleges
in the fall, let alone when they begin the process this spring. Current
juniors would start the SSR process this spring, meeting with one SSR
writer, and then finish the process in the fall with a different person who
is new to that student and quite possibly new to the school.
• In addition, the new system is likely to result in a net reduction in the
already-overstretched College Office. While the office would continue to
exist as a separate entity, Principal Teitel has proposed that Aileen
Danaher, an experienced English teacher and college adviser who
works in the College Office three periods a day, return to teaching fulltime.
This would reduce the staffing in the College Office to only 2 staff
members from 2.6, already low by historical standards.
• Our College Director, Pat Cleary, feels strongly that Ms. Danaher, who
is a highly regarded teacher and adviser, remain in the College Office.
She is committed to the office for two more years, and to lose her insight
and experience at this critical time would not only deprive students of
much-needed assistance but also remove someone who can help train
the new advisers.
• We are asking that the new guidance counselors be hired in phases and
begin by working with the current freshman and incoming freshman
classes. We are aware of situations where new hires have not worked
out and have been difficult to remove.
• We are also concerned, based on past experience, that it would be difficult
to hire so many counselors of the desired quality at once, especially those
conversant with the needs of gifted students. We would also like to ensure
that some new hires are bilingual in Chinese and Korean.
(Please go to next page)

Concerns About the New Guidance Proposal by Sumiko Nakazato & Lauren Coleman-Lochner
(continued from previous page)
• The principal says the cost of the new system would be about equal to the
current system. For that to be the case, the school would have to hire
counselors on the lower end of the pay scale. While some counselors with less
experience may be equally qualified and desirable, we are concerned that cost
rather than qualification will be the motivating factor in decision-making.
• The school has also not worked out how these new hires would be
supervised and evaluated.
• We also are asking that school increase, not reduce, staffing in the College
Office and include parents in the advising process. Until the PA began
funding after-school appointments with students and their parents last
year, parents had no scheduled input or contact with the College Office.
• We believe the school can greatly improve its guidance and college
advising process. But we don’t believe that immediately installing an
untested system without a period of transition and assessment is a sound
idea, particularly since SSRs from Stuyvesant are well regarded by
college admissions officers. Currently, humanities teachers with
extensive writing experience produce SSRs. Guidance staff don’t
necessarily have this degree of training or background.
With programming for the Spring semester
about to begin, parents welcomed the explanations
and demonstration of online course registration
offered at the November 15 PA meeting by Edward
Wong, Assistant Principal, Technology Services;
Sophia Liang, Program Chairperson and math
teacher; and Jonathan Weil, grade advisor and
English teacher.
Slotting Stuy’s approximately 3,000 students
and 150 teachers into courses that meet
everyone’s needs and desires is certainly a
daunting proposition! Ms. Liang explained that the
first job of programming is to make sure that each
student enrolls in the courses necessary to
graduate on time. Secondarily it is to give students
the opportunity to pursue their academic interests,
stimulate their curiosity, take courses they’re
interested in, and give them the flexibility to pursue
their extracurricular activities. Students must take
no fewer than 6 instructional periods (5 for
seniors), not counting lunch or gym, in a maximum
10-period day,
Programming takes place online for all
students on the Program Office web site. (Go to
www.stuy.edu and click on the Programming link,
where you will see a link for Online Programming).
Students log on with their Stuy user name and
password. As Mr. Wong demonstrated for parents
at the meeting using his own sample program,
students will see a list of course numbers (strings
of mysterious letters and numbers) for all the
courses they are expected or eligible to take for the
next semester. Below that, the full names are listed
for each course code along with any needed
explanation. For example, for a basic science
course it might say, “This is a full year course and
cannot be dropped mid-year.”
In some areas, students will have a choice of
courses. For example, for a junior English class,
there is a choice of Early or Later American
Literature for one semester and for the other
semester an array of courses including Poetry,
Acting, or African-American Literature, or there is a
two-semester AP English course. Students may
also choose to add an elective course to their
regular load. When there is a choice, a pop-up box
will list all the classes for which a student is
eligible. Actually, there will be up to three such
boxes to give the student the option to list first,
second, and third choices. Students are strongly
urged to enter all three choices because if they
don’t receive their first choice, and second or third
choices are not listed, the system can program
them for any of the courses, and it’s liable to be the
one the student won’t find acceptable. If they try to
register for a course but don’t have the
prerequisites, the computer will reject the request.
That means that none of the requests have been
processed, so they have to start over.
It is important to keep in mind that online
programming only records the student’s request
for courses. It doesn’t mean that the student is
necessarily going to get them. The programming
form states: “We will make every effort to schedule
you for your first choice classes, but we CANNOT
GUARANTEE placement. Your on-screen and email
confirmations only indicate that we have
correctly received your requests.”
Students can return to the programming web
site as often as they like during the programming
period. Only the last request submitted counts.
According to the Program Department, there is no
advantage to submitting a request early. It is not
first come, first served. The system screens and
collects the requests. After programming ends, the
system compiles and aggregates all the requests.
Because factors like budgets, students’ course
requests, and the availability of teachers determine
what courses are offered, not every course in the
course listings is offered every term. This also
means that the schedule can’t be made up ahead
of time and that the teachers for courses are not
known during online programming.
Incoming freshman are programmed based on
feedback from middle school guidance counselors,
any Regents exams they’ve already taken, and
Stuyvesant’s math and foreign language
placement tests. Starting with their second
semester, they will do online programming and
may have a choice of an elective as early as their
second semester. Choices and room in a student’s
schedule for electives increase each year, given
Stuyvesant High School PA Bulletin December 2005 Page 5
• The school must establish an oversight committee, including current SSR
writers, to ensure that the needs of all students are met while the new
system comes up to speed.
We welcome your thoughts and ideas about the proposal. Equally critical
are comments from senior or alumni parents on their college application
experiences. Please forward comments to garylincoff@earthlink.net or
mweinmanbr@aol.com or place them in the PA’s mailbox on the second floor
or in our suggestion/comments box at meetings. While we would appreciate
having your name and contact information available for follow-up questions, it
will remain anonymous to the administration.
The proposed guidance system would be a huge change and should not
be done rashly or without a consensus from the school community. Your input
is needed to help establish that consensus and to negotiate a less-drastic
implementation of the plan. Your concerns and experiences can make a
difference.
Thanks for your help.
Sumi and Lauren
Demystifying Academic Programming and Online Course Registration by Ellen Bilofsky
the wide array of courses that Stuyvesant has to
offer.
How do students make these choices? They
should talk to parents, teachers, friends, grade
advisors, guidance counselors, and department
chairs. Start by understanding the graduation
requirements and knowing what courses are
required. This information is available on the Stuy
web site, and the group meetings that grade
advisors schedule with students should cover that.
Grade advisors and guidance counselors are also
available to talk to students one on one about their
programs, but it is up to students to arrange
appointments. To prepare for such meetings, have
an idea of your interests and what you do well in.
Then look at the course offerings. (Although there
are printed booklets, the online course listings are
the most up to date, and required courses for
graduation do change.) Avoid extremes in choosing
courses—either all Advanced Placement courses
or the bare minimum of required courses.
Once a student receives his or her program at
the beginning of a new semester there is a period
to first correct errors and then to make requested
changes. Students should see their grade advisor
first. The primary reason for students not receiving
courses they requested are conflicts with required
courses. From 70 to 100 of the courses offered are
“singletons”—courses for which there is only one
section. For example, if students are taking
German, Italian, or band as required courses, the
classes meet at one time only, so they can’t be
programmed for any other course at the same
time. Also, seniors have priority in filling electives,
since they will not have another opportunity to take
the classes.
Parents listening to the presentation were able
to have many of their questions answered. If your
child has more questions about programming or
the courses he or she should take, start by having
your son or daughter contact the grade advisor or
guidance counselor. Happy programming!
The P.A. is grateful to Edward Wong, Sophia
Liang, and Jonathan Weil for so generously
donating their time and expertise to present this
program.

Stuyvesant High School PA Bulletin December 2005 Page 11

Building Stuy Community is a group
of students, teachers, parents, and
administrators who have been
meeting regularly since Spring 2005
to counteract overly competitive,
stressful, and unhealthy aspects of
the Stuyvesant culture and form a
more cohesive and supportive high
school environment for students and
staff. Started in response to An Open
Letter to the Stuy Community written
by English teacher Jonathan Weil,
the group is now student run.
Thus far, the group has increased the
focus of freshman orientation on
friendliness rather than on college;
published student support
information in the Big Sib Handbook
and brochures distributed to all
homerooms; formed a Building Stuy
Community Yahoo group as a forum
for online communications between
meetings; made plans for a Stuy
Community student website; and
Correction
In the “Google or Babble?” article by
Joanne Park in the November Bulletin,
the first paragraph was missing. It
should have read as follows:
“I translated a sentence from
‘A Conversation with Dona
Matthews, Part1’ by Google.
“The original was: ‘The more we
learn about how giftedness
develops, the more we learn that it’s
a very diverse group or category.’ I
used Translate.net on Google site.”
The article is correct as posted on
the P.A. web site. Our apologies to
Joanne for the error.
New PA Officers and
Committee Chair
by Simeon Baum
Earlier in November, Gillian Smith, the PA
Treasurer submitted her resignation, due to
unavoidable business constraints. Gillian
has been finding her time consumed with a
host of issues in her role as Principal of a
new public school. On behalf of the Parents’
Association, the Executive Committee would
like to express its gratitude to Gillian for her
substantial contributions to the Stuyvesant
community, and wish her success in her
current engagements.
Yong Dong, the former Assistant Treasurer
has assumed the position of Treasurer, and
his appointment to the Treasurer’s historical
role as Chair of the Appropriations
Committee was approved by the PA at the
November 15th General Meeting. In addition,
at the November 15th General Meeting, the
PA ratified the nomination of Alka Desai to
the position of Assistant Treasurer. Alka is a
longstanding member of the Appropriations
Committee, with a professional background
in finance. Yong, who audits large
corporations for the State of Ohio, and Alka
exemplify excellence and bear the hallmarks
of an effective team to lead the PA in using,
managing, and controlling its finances.
On behalf of the Parents’ Association, the
Executive Committee thanks Yong Dong and
Alka Desai for accepting these new posts.
Over 500 alumni, parents, faculty and other members of the
Stuyvesant family welcomed Frank McCourt back to the school for a
fundraiser benefiting the English Department. Just a few minutes
into his talk on Monday, November 14, we knew that he was back
where he belonged.
The stories that Mr. McCourt told about his days teaching at
Stuyvesant brought the memories flooding back. While some who
don’t know him may feel that the incidents he relates in his new
book, Teacher Man, could never really have happened, many of
those in attendance knew better. Mr. McCourt really was a unique
and innovative teacher who used engaging methods to make
language come alive. It is only now, though, that we learned that
those weren’t all well-thought-out tactics, but rather spur of the
moment brainstorms born of necessity.
Mr. McCourt started out his discussion, and his book, by speaking
of the beginning of his teaching career. His introduction to the New
To the Editor:
I am a freshman parent. I
want to pass on my feedback
to the PA regarding the PA
meetings. They have been so
very informative and
helpful, I would attend them
in snow and rain, no matter
how inconvenient! I think it is
wonderful for the PA to
present these discussions
(especially the October
program by the guidance
counselor Jay Biegelson and
the November program on
De-Mystifying Online
Programming and
Registration).
The daunting task for
parents is to locate
information (especially if you
did not come from the public
school system), and I
continually marvel how well
organized the Stuy PA is at
disseminating information,
organizing events,
encouraging discussion about
changes (like the proposed
grade advisor changes.)
An Evening with Frank McCourt
by Sari Halper-Dickson '87, President, Stuyvesant High School Alumni Association
York City public school system was on Staten Island, but as he
describes it, several incidents led him to be kicked up the ladder to
Stuyvesant High School where he spent the majority of his thirty
years in the system.
As anyone who ever spent a minute in his class or read either
Angela’s Ashes or ’Tis can imagine, those years were ripe with
anecdotes for the new book. While reading excerpts, Mr. McCourt
had the audience alternately roaring with laughter and nodding their
heads as they joined him in recalling the incidents.
A good time was had by those who attended. We thank everyone
involved for their help in making the evening so special, with an
extra special thank you going out to Frank McCourt. It was really in
his honor that everyone came out on a Monday night! We invite you
to attend future events and share in the memories and fun. Continue
to watch for new announcements of upcoming events in the Alumni
Spectator and on the Alumni Association web site at www.shsaa.org.
