Dear Parents
Academic Counselling
Thank you to all of those Year 9 Parents who visited us on Friday 20 February.
Despite the terrible weather we had a huge turn out of parents, with their daugh
ters for academic counselling with Year 9 Form Teachers.
It was a very successful venture and one we will now carry out with Year 13 parents on Fri
day 27 March. Year 13 form teachers will have the Term 1 Report available, and will dis
cuss NCEA results and students’ goals for the year.
We will also have a mini Careers Expo in the school hall where you will be able to get ca
reer advice with your daughter.
Polyfest 19—21 March
Thank you to the many parents who have supported their daughters as they prac
tised their routines. The last ten days is always stressful. Please make sure your
daughters have early nights. We have had the Homework Centre operating Tues
day, Wednesday and Thursday after school before practices. I wish to acknowledge the
work that Mrs Brooking and teaching staff have put into helping the girls keep up with
study.
Fiafia
Fiafia is on Tuesday 17 March 6.30 pm. There will be no door sales.
I look forward to all of the groups being excellent ambassadors for Kelston Girls College at
Polyfest. My best wishes go to: Kerehana, Samoan, Tongan, Fijian, Cook Island, Indian
and Tuvaluan culture groups, all of which will perform at the Secondary Schools Maori and
Pacific Nation Festival. My thanks to the teachers and tutors who have supported the
groups.
Health and Safety First!
The health and safety of students, staff and all our visitors is very important to us at
Kelston Girls’ College. Recently we have become concerned about unnecessary traffic in
our grounds before and after school.
Please do not drive into the school from Archibald Road before, during or after school. We
frequently have large trucks delivering building materials for the new administration block,
just inside the main gate. This is the first phase in the reallocation and upgrade of some of our
offices and the Hauora, Careers, Dean and Pastoral Care Centres.
Cars delivering students to the main administration area, turning round and leaving, when staff cars are also
entering or leaving, are causing major problems compromising the safety of our students.
If you need to deliver a student close to the building you could use Lynwood Avenue entrance by the swim
ming pool as there is no construction site there and the traffic is much lighter.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter
Assistant Principal.
Bus Transport
A number of our students use public transport. Parents please remind your daughter’s that as
ambassadors for Kelston Girls’ College we expect them to give their seats to older folk who also
use public transport. We also expect them to speak quietly on the buses and trains. We would
appreciate your support in this matter.
Message from the Health Centre
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine National Immunisation Programme
The HPV programme aims to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer in New Zealand.
Each year approximately 160 women develop cervical cancer and about 60 women die
from it. Cervical cancer is caused by HPV infection that fails to clear. The vaccine pro
vides protection against the two most common highrisk HPV types.
The HPV vaccine will be offered through a twoyear schoolbased programme.
In 2009 young women in Years 8, 12 and 13 will be offered the vaccine.
In 2010 young women in Years 8, 10, 11 and 12 will be offered the vaccine. During Term One of each year,
girls who are eligible for the vaccine will receive information and a consent form. With signed consent, they
will be able to receive the immunisation at school.
Information about the HPV immunisation programme is available on the Ministry of Health website at:
www.moh.govt.nz/immunisation
Parents can also phone 0800 immune (0800 466 863) – Immunisation Advisory Centre.
