Foreword
Foreword
The 2009/10 academic year has, once
again, represented an outstanding year
of achievement and success for the
School of Law. As in previous years, a
considerable amount of this may be
attributed to the close collaboration of
staff and students as well as the
excellent ongoing working relationship
which the School has with the regional
community; continuously implementing
our business-facing vision and ensuring
that entrepreneurialism is at the heart of
our activities. Significant achievements
during the past academic year include:
• Being Semi-Finalists of the English-
Speaking Union / Essex Court
Chambers National Mooting
Competition in 2010 as well as
reaching the last 16 of the BPP /
OUP National Mooting Competition.
• Securing sponsorship for our
mooting and mock trial activities from
a leading Criminal Set of Chambers,
15 New Bridge Street, London.
• Hosting the Annual Public Lecture
delivered by the Honourable Sir
Justice Eady in November 2009 as
part of the School’s wider Public
Lecture Series.
• Enjoying continued success in
academic research and publication
attuned to the needs of the
profession, employers, as well as the
wider national and international
environment, resulting in some of the
sectors leading texts in Criminal Law,
Company Law, English Law as well
as in e-Commerce Law and Human
Rights Law.
• Securing planning permission for,
and seeing the commencement of
work on, the new £10 million Law
Court Building at the entrance to the
University’s de Havilland campus.
• Enjoying an ever growing wealth of
student-led social events which
included Burns Night, Chinese New
Year, Indian Night and African Night
alongside more traditional events
such as the Student Law Society
Annual Ball.
For the third successive year, the
School has achieved an overall
approval rating of 90% or greater in the
National Student Survey, which ranks
us amongst the top quarter of Law
Schools in the country. This is a
reflection of the School’s commitment
to the delivery of a creative, ambitious
and high quality educational experience
whereby students are placed at the
heart of what we do.
Over the past year, the School has
validated successfully its new full-time
Legal Practice Course, which will be
launched in September 2010 and
includes ‘pathways’ in Corporate
Finance, Commercial Law, Private Client
and Dispute Resolution, offering
students the opportunity to tailor-make
their programme of study so as to suit
their intended careers. In line with our
innovative and forward looking ethos,
students will have the opportunity to
work in a newly created Mediation
Centre, which will run alongside our
current pro bono Law Clinic and
Graduate Consulting Unit, and will
provide students with a unique
opportunity to engage in a live client
advice service as part of their studies.
The School has also successfully
diversified its undergraduate portfolio,
gaining formal approval from the JASB
to introduce an LLB in Commercial Law
and LLB in Government & Politics,
building on our current successes and
furthering our ambitious and
entrepreneurial approach towards legal
education. This was accompanied
during 2009/10 by the pilot of online
seminars and lectures which not only
underpin the development of one of the
most flexible part-time LLB degrees in
the sector, but also ensure that
preparations are in place for the launch
of the School’s new distance learning
LLB in September 2011.
It is an exciting and rewarding time to be
a part of the School of Law, whether as
a student, academic or via our wide
range of professional training or
community oriented activities. As always,
the School would like to express its
gratitude to members of the Judiciary, St
Albans Chambers, the Hertfordshire Law
Society and regional firms for their
continued support as well as the
development of our students and
graduates.
If you have not yet had the opportunity
to review our other literature, such as the
National Student Survey or Student
Profile booklets, then I would encourage
you to take the time to learn more about
the close collaboration that exists
between the School’s academic staff,
our student body and our wide range of
stakeholders, as well as the resulting
successes which arise on a yearly basis.
