CONTENT ENHANCEMENT Infostream January/February 2007 Thousands of Economic Statistics for France and Germany Added Full INSEE and Bundesbank databanks will be freely available on Datastream. A supplement to the main Thomson Economics offering, the Source Databanks contain thousands of series as organised, described, coded and maintained by the national agencies. These whole datasets provide the extensive detail needed for specific projects and in-depth subject or industry analysis. To facilitate working with the 30,000 series for Germany and 15,000 for France, the following enhancements are being implemented: • Series are presented in the Thomson Datastream Navigator, Explorer for Economics, in their own section labelled Source Databanks. The organisation is based on that of the INSEE and Bundesbank websites, with which many clients are familiar. Here clients can find series via outline by subject. • The Criteria page in Navigator has been modified. The line labelled Dataset allows the narrowing of a search to just Source Databanks. Alternatively, it allows the exclusion of these series, which are many in number – 45,000 altogether. • The name field on the flyout in the next version of Navigator (due in Q1 2007) displays an “Expanded Name”, which has the full series description from the sources, in local languages. These descriptions are often longer than the standard 64-character Datastream title, making the Expanded Name the main source of information on the new series. This field (and the Name displayed in the main interface) will be searched, when a “Name” search string is entered on the Criteria page. It will also be displayed on the Classifications & Metadata flyout, and can be captured to Excel using the Export to Excel option. The majority of the series for France and Germany, which are already in the Thomson Economics product, are from these sources, so many series will be shown twice in Explorer, once under National Sources and again in Source Databanks. When in a Source Databanks listing, the series with English names are generally those that are duplicated. Source Databanks will be batch updated when the sources provide the files, with series that overlap the main product being updated earlier from news and statistical releases as now. © Thomson Financial Limited 2007 31
