Gale mead & The Boggio Cape & Crown Everything you’ve wanted to know but were afraid to ask ... What a surprise it was for the organizers of the Cotati Accordion Festival when Gale approached us the first day of the festival last year. We were delighted to find the bronze statue of Jim Boggio decked out in his traditional cape and crown. He IS the King of the Stomach Steinway. The organizers and attendees were amazed. The person behind the magic is Gale Mead. Why does she do it? In her own words: “I was inspired to start doing these public acts of knitted and crocheted whimsy by others around the country and around the world, because it looked like a fun means of self-expression and a nice way to brighten up the streets around me. There’s one woman who lives in Berkeley whose “yarn bombs” in Sonoma caught my eye and made me think more seriously about doing some of my own (her blog is here: http://streetcolor.wordpress.com — She’s currently working on a project for the Sonoma Art Museum). “Ever since I started yarnbombing I thought it would be fun to do something with the statue, but it wasn’t the sort of thing to do spontaneously one random afternoon, because then the park maintenance guys would just see it as an act of vandalism and take it down. So that’s why I waited until the festival and approached the organizers about doing it with their blessings.
