ODEON & UCI Cinemas Annual Review 2011
Corporate Social
Responsibility
ODEON & UCI Cinemas Group continues to focus on the responsible management
and development of the business for the long-term benefit of all key stakeholders.
Local & Business Communities
ODEON & UCI Cinemas Group continues to
make real progress in support of local and
business communities. Customer safety,
security, enjoyment, comfort and choice
remain the cornerstones of our service
proposition.
Cinemas in each territory continue to work
closely with all key stakeholders to further
improve the cinema-going experience for
the benefit of all customers and in particular
those with disabilities.
Reducing Environmental Impact
The Group has continued to invest in energy
reduction initiatives. In the UK ODEON has
invested in an energy management service
and an on-line energy management tool.
This allows further focus on consumption
which has continued to fall (for both gas and
electricity)
In 2011 ODEON completed the installation of
Automatic Meter Reading technology across
all cinemas for both gas and electricity. This
allowed much more immediate and greater
visibility of consumption data. ODEON has
continued to work with suppliers to switch
current cinemas from standard lighting
systems to low consumption LEDs. All new
build cinemas are now fitted with LED lights
as part of the standard specification.
Replacement of chiller equipment continues
in the UK. An HVAC and cooling systems
swap out is also well underway. The new
units will only run when required and are
specifically sized for each cinema.
In 2011 ODEON introduced a printer
replacement programme so that every
cinema replacing printers received new low
energy equipment.
Based on the outcome of a highly successful
trial in several locations in 2011 ODEON
intends to introduce recycling bins to every
cinema during 2012. This will allow more
recycling to take place (beyond the 20% of
packaging we currently target to recycle)
* Note: the company does not contribute directly to the charities.
Given the success of energy reduction and
efficiency initiatives in the UK ODEON has
decided to apply for reaccreditation for the
Carbon Trust Standard that was awarded in
2010.
In Continental Europe we continue to follow
the European Directive 94/62/EC applicable
to Packaging Waste Management and
each territory participates in an Integrated
Management System (IMS).
Health & Wellbeing
In the UK we continue to offer customers
greater choice and variety across the retail
product range.
In 2011 ODEON became the first cinema
company in the UK to provide customers
with specific nutritional facts on the entire
range of products on sale in cinemas.
Nutritional information was made available to
customers via leaflets, on the website and on
menu boards.
For 2012 ODEON is working to support two
key government-backed initiatives and we
will fully support the Responsible Drinking
and the Health Responsibility Deal pledges.
The latter aims to better inform customers
about calorific and nutritional intake.
In all Continental European territories,
significant progress has been made to
source, promote, and merchandise healthier
food alternatives. This has been achieved
by actively promoting non sugared drinks,
introducing larger sizes of bottled water,
using sunflower oil to produce popcorn and
introducing alternative drink choices such as
fruit smoothies.
Charity Activities
In the UK ODEON continues to work closely
with its charity partners, the NSPCC and
Variety. There is ever increasing involvement
and engagement by all employees to
support the company’s charity activities with
numerous events taking place each week
across the country.
There is now an even more focused and
determined Charity team in place and all
regions have adopted a charity target.
In 2011, through the joint efforts of
customers and employees over £80,000 in
donations was raised. In total over £325,000
has been raised to date and we fully expect
this amount to exceed £400,000 by the end
of 2012.*
