6 alne Music & Arts Festival 2012 Saturday 6th October 03 - A Harvest Of Cherished Things 9.30am - 5.00pm - Calne Baptist Church Admission Free A Harvest Of Cherished Things is an exciting collaboration between Calne Artists and the congregation of Calne Baptist Church; an art installation of found objects of significance to members of both organisations - with explanations why! 04 - Organ Recital: The Iron Voice 12.15pm - St Mary’s Church Admission £3 (Friends Free) Gareth Bennett has been playing the organ since he was five years old and has held positions at many parish churches. His recital will be a tour of St Mary’s famous four-manual Conacher organ with music from Bach to the present day. 05 - Afternoon Talk: Master of Glass 2.00pm - St Peter’s Church, Blackland Admission Free, with refreshments afterwards. Mac McHugh from Great Panes, Chippenham, discusses the work of Charles Kempe (1837-1907) whose windows can still be seen in many Parish Churches across the country and in Gloucester and York Cathedrals. 06 - Calne Choral Society 7.30pm - The John Bentley School Hall Admission £10 (£8 Friends) Calne Choral perform works from the 19th & 20th century which truly represent the great British choral society tradition. Mendelssohn’s Hymn of Praise is partnered with the wonderful Serenade to Music by Vaughan Williams. The Serenade, not heard in Calne since 1982, is rarely performed by local choirs due to its full and rich scoring. The choir has a growing reputation for joyous and lively performances which will guarantee excitement and bring a real sense of occasion to this major Festival event. 07 - Boogie and Blues 8.00pm - Marden House Admission £8 (£6 Friends) A lively and entertaining evening of piano and singing from Julian “Fingers” Phillips and entourage of the UK Boogie Woogie Club. Originating from Texas, with its fast rolling bass, Boogie Woogie gives the music an undercurrent of tremendous power. Power piano playing at its best! In this concert, two pianos will really rock. Julian Phillips is one of the leading champions of this type of music, and is well known throughout the south of England. Sponsored by: Rupert Bolt Electrical Contractors www.cmaf.org.uk Sunday 7th October 08 - Festival Service 10.45am - Calne Baptist Church, Castle Street The theme of this service will be ‘A Harvest of…’ thanking God for our memories, gifts and talents and concluding with communion. It will be attended by the Mayor and Councillors. All are welcome. The service will relate to the Art Installation, 6th Oct, ‘A Harvest of cherished things’ (Event 3). 09 - Film: ‘The Priest of Love’ Director Christopher Miles 3.00pm - Marden House Admission £8 (£6 Friends) Introduced by Christopher Miles, the feature film on the life of D.H.Lawrence who eloped to Italy with Mrs Frieda Weekley exactly 100 years ago. From this moment, the film demonstrates the extraordinary lives this brave writer and remarkable woman shared together. Filmed in the locations where the Lawrence’s lived; Mexico, Italy, France, Cornwall and Nottingham. Please note this is a Cert 15 film. Starring Ian McKellen, Janet Suzman, Ava Gardner, Penelope Keith, John Gielgud. Screenplay: Alan Plater - from the biography ‘Priest of Love’ by Harry T. Moore. Producers: Christopher Miles & Andrew Donally. Director Christopher Miles 10 - The Lindsay Howard Academy of Dance 4.00pm - The John Bentley School Hall Admission £4 (£2 Friends) Tea will be served during the interval A number of students from The Lindsay Howard Academy of Dance will have attended a Summer School with the theme ‘Dancing Around The World’. The Summer School will result in a mini show featuring several different dance styles to be performed alongside a showcase of all Calne Class Students and Academy Teams. Programme of Events Monday 10th 8th October Tuesday 9th October 11 - Recital of Voice & Percussion 12.15pm - Marden House Admission £3 (Friends Free) From the sublime soprano voice of Rachel Gilliam, to the blatant stealing of Bach’s string music for James Allard’s xylophone; this is a rare opportunity to experience the coming together of voice and tuned percussion, celebrating early and contemporary music alike. 12 - Pre-Concert Talk 6.15pm - Marden House Free to Friends of Calne Music & Arts Festival 13 - Voice Recital Michelle Sheridan – Soprano Peter Grant – Bass-Baritone Daniel Moriyama - Piano 7.30pm - Marden House Admission £8 (£6 Friends) Peter and Michelle live and work in Calne. Peter teaches music at The John Bentley School and Michelle teaches singing both privately and at St Mary’s School. They are joined by Daniel to present an evening of song. The first half will be settings of poets of the British Isles, including Auden, Burns and Macdiarmid. The second half will be based on theatre, including a variety of pieces from the world of opera, operetta and music theatre. 14 - Calne Silver Band 7.30pm - Town Hall Admission £7 (£5 Friends) With a history that dates back to the 1920’s, and having previously performed in our twinned towns in Germany and France, and for HRH The Prince of Wales, Calne Silver Band make a welcomed return to our Festival programme with a performance of traditional and popular music. 15 - CODA Lily Packer: Piano 9.30pm - Marden House Admission Free Rounding off the evening will be one of John Bentley’s talented musicians. Making her Festival debut, Lily Packer will be performing a varied programme of music for solo piano. 16 - Voices from Primary Schools Director, Ursula Barham 12.15pm - The John Bentley School Hall Admission £3 (Friends Free) lunch will be available at marden house for festival goers every weekday, following the lunchtime recital Voices from the Primary Schools of Calne and the surrounding District are here to astound you with their fantastic singing. They will entertain you as individual schools and as a massed choir. A sea of smiling faces and joyous song awaits you. 17 - Music Scholars from Marlborough College 7.30pm - Marden House Admission £7 (£5 Friends) Music at Marlborough College enjoys a long and illustrious history. There are more than 40 Music Scholars, some of whom perform regularly for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. The Music Department is both ambitious and dedicated to the education of young people, inspiring them with the beauty and rewards of music making. Their diverse Festival programme will include works for piano, flute, violin and double bass. This is an evening not to be missed! 18 - CODA …And now for the PYP’s 9.30pm - Marden House Admission Free As a fitting end to this Young Performers’ Day, Mary Pilcher-Clayton will introduce some Promising Young Performers from local schools to play for you. www.cmaf.org.uk 7
