4) Consolidation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Inca</strong> control Mid 12th century<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cuzco Valley, when <strong>the</strong> 4th<br />

<strong>Inca</strong> was young<br />

5) The time <strong>of</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>s, when <strong>the</strong> Late 11th century<br />

1st <strong>Inca</strong> <strong>and</strong> his sibl<strong>in</strong>gs crawled<br />

out <strong>of</strong> a cave<br />

The <strong>Inca</strong> genealogical account that supplies <strong>the</strong> general chronology for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Historia Indica, beg<strong>in</strong>s with a story about Manco Capac <strong>and</strong> his seven<br />

sibl<strong>in</strong>gs crawl<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> central w<strong>in</strong>dow <strong>of</strong> three at Tambotoco, a site about<br />

25 km. south <strong>of</strong> Cuzco. The sibl<strong>in</strong>gs made several <strong>in</strong>termediate stops before<br />

settl<strong>in</strong>g permanently <strong>in</strong> Cuzco, resid<strong>in</strong>g for years <strong>in</strong> each place. The f<strong>in</strong>al place<br />

<strong>of</strong> residence before <strong>the</strong>ir move to Cuzco was a place called Matagua. The <strong>Inca</strong><br />

odyssey is described <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> look<strong>in</strong>g for good l<strong>and</strong>s (Sarmiento de Gamboa<br />

1906, chp. 12: 35). To test a site for potential settlement, a vara (rod) was<br />

thrown. How it penetrated <strong>the</strong> ground was read as a sign <strong>of</strong> fertility. When <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Inca</strong> sibl<strong>in</strong>gs f<strong>in</strong>ally reached <strong>the</strong> Cuzco valley, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> women, Mama<br />

Guaco, threw two varas, both <strong>of</strong> gold. The one that revealed fertile soil l<strong>and</strong>ed<br />

<strong>in</strong> Guanaypata, a place <strong>in</strong>habited by <strong>the</strong> Guallas, “two arquebus shots from<br />

Cuzco”, <strong>and</strong> near a Spanish arch at <strong>the</strong> edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early colonial city where<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Inca</strong> road lead<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Lake Titicaca region departed (Sarmiento de<br />

Gamboa 1906, chp. 13: 38-39). Between Sarmiento <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> this<br />

group <strong>in</strong>terviewed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Toledo Informaciones, a very bloody story <strong>of</strong> conquest<br />

is told. Return<strong>in</strong>g first to Matagua, Manco Capac, <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r who was <strong>the</strong><br />

progenitor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dynastic l<strong>in</strong>e, sent ano<strong>the</strong>r bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>f to a stone boundarymarker<br />

where <strong>the</strong> church <strong>of</strong> Santo Dom<strong>in</strong>go st<strong>and</strong>s today. The bro<strong>the</strong>r went<br />

to <strong>the</strong> appo<strong>in</strong>ted place, sat <strong>the</strong>re <strong>and</strong> turned to stone, becom<strong>in</strong>g a marker <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Inca</strong> possession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> site. Mov<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> spot where <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r had marked<br />

<strong>the</strong> site <strong>of</strong> Cuzco, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Inca</strong>s also began <strong>the</strong>ir campaign to usurp <strong>the</strong> water <strong>and</strong><br />

l<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Guallas (Sarmiento de Gamboa 1906, chp. 13: 39-40).<br />

Fifteen Guallas were <strong>in</strong>terviewed <strong>in</strong> Cuzco dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Toledo <strong>in</strong>terviews.<br />

They testified that <strong>the</strong>y had come from Pachatusan. Their l<strong>and</strong>s were on some<br />

terraces on a slope past San Blas, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> parishes <strong>of</strong> Cuzco. The <strong>Inca</strong>s had<br />

<strong>in</strong>troduced people <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong>ir l<strong>and</strong>s on two occasions. Out <strong>of</strong> fear <strong>of</strong> <strong>Inca</strong><br />

cruelty, <strong>the</strong> Guallas fled with <strong>the</strong>ir c<strong>in</strong>checona Apo Caua to look for new l<strong>and</strong>s,<br />

settl<strong>in</strong>g 20 leagues [100 km.] from Cuzco, <strong>in</strong> a town named after <strong>the</strong>m where<br />

<strong>the</strong>y still lived at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview (ff. 139-140v).<br />

The Guallas say noth<strong>in</strong>g about an act <strong>of</strong> extreme cruelty that occurred<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>Inca</strong> attack, but Sarmiento does. He described how <strong>the</strong> Guallas<br />

resisted <strong>the</strong> <strong>Inca</strong>s until Mama Guaco, Manco Capac’s sister, killed a Gualla<br />

<strong>and</strong> “made pieces out <strong>of</strong> him”. With his entrails, heart <strong>and</strong> lungs <strong>in</strong> her mouth<br />

<strong>and</strong> a hayb<strong>in</strong>to (a stone tied to a cord) <strong>in</strong> her h<strong>and</strong>s, she went after <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Guallas with “diabolical determ<strong>in</strong>ation” (Sarmiento de Gamboa 1906, chp. 13:<br />

39-40). Sarmiento is likely to magnify any k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> negative statement about<br />
