There is a great deal more to know about how <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> war was<br />
embedded <strong>in</strong> Andean societies. We end know<strong>in</strong>g less than we might want to<br />
know. There was more to <strong>the</strong> story <strong>the</strong>n, but consider<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> time that has<br />
elapsed s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation was ga<strong>the</strong>red, we end know<strong>in</strong>g quite a lot.<br />
Abstract<br />
From <strong>in</strong>terview transcripts <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r written sources drawn from native<br />
testimony about warfare, an image can be developed <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> conduct <strong>of</strong> war <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>Inca</strong> heartl<strong>and</strong> just before <strong>and</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Inca</strong> expansion. Capta<strong>in</strong>s, or<br />
c<strong>in</strong>checona, were chosen when needed for defense. These <strong>in</strong>dividuals were<br />
successful as leaders <strong>in</strong> armed conflict. Their descendants were expected to<br />
possess <strong>the</strong> same qualities, but <strong>the</strong>se had none <strong>the</strong> less to be demonstrated.<br />
What marked <strong>the</strong> <strong>Inca</strong> expansion was a contest among groups who claimed to<br />
be capaccuna. This status was hereditary: not just <strong>the</strong> capta<strong>in</strong> but those<br />
connected through a genealogical tie shared. Capac status also had to be<br />
demonstrated through success <strong>in</strong> armed conflict, so <strong>the</strong> <strong>Inca</strong>s needed a showy<br />
victory each time <strong>the</strong>y campaigned. Their <strong>in</strong>terests were better served, however,<br />
if most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> peoples <strong>the</strong>y encountered on <strong>the</strong>ir campaigns submitted without<br />
engag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> battle. <strong>Peace</strong> was a by-product <strong>of</strong> submission, under <strong>the</strong>se<br />
circumstances.<br />
Our sources are biased <strong>in</strong> favor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> <strong>Inca</strong> expansion, but a<br />
general trend toward <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> ritual practices <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions<br />
related to warfare is evident. <strong>Inca</strong> accounts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir successes stress <strong>the</strong><br />
movement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir armies, <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> captives <strong>and</strong> booty, <strong>the</strong> celebration<br />
afterward <strong>of</strong> a successful campaign -both on <strong>the</strong> road <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> Cuzco, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
treatment <strong>of</strong> <strong>Inca</strong> <strong>and</strong> enemy dead, all suggest that <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutionalization <strong>of</strong><br />
success <strong>in</strong> a s<strong>in</strong>gle group led to a formalization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> practices related to<br />
warfare.<br />
<strong>in</strong>ca, justo antes y durante la expansión <strong>in</strong>ca.
