achiev<strong>in</strong>g present <strong>and</strong> future victories. Indeed, it is <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> ritual<br />

practices <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions that is most notable when <strong>the</strong> <strong>Inca</strong>s tell us<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g about warfare.<br />

We can learn someth<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> disputes before <strong>the</strong> <strong>Inca</strong><br />

expansion but little about <strong>the</strong> conduct <strong>of</strong> war. There were disputes over m<strong>in</strong>or<br />

matters like ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g k<strong>in</strong>dl<strong>in</strong>g on someone else’s l<strong>and</strong>; raids for movable<br />

property <strong>and</strong> women; serious attempts to remove people from <strong>the</strong>ir l<strong>and</strong>sprompt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> residents to flee or face decimation -<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re were campaigns<br />

to force people <strong>in</strong>to alliance with more powerful groups, perhaps for common<br />

defense. There may have been rules <strong>of</strong> engagement -for example, fight<strong>in</strong>g may<br />

have only taken place dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> daylight hours, given what Betanzos tells us<br />

about <strong>Inca</strong> battles. We learn more about leadership. Perhaps <strong>the</strong> most<br />

important th<strong>in</strong>g we learn is that c<strong>in</strong>checona status was not hereditary,<br />

although <strong>the</strong>re was some expectation <strong>of</strong> its transmission down <strong>the</strong><br />

generations. C<strong>in</strong>checona status was a practical matter that had to be<br />

demonstrated <strong>in</strong> armed engagements.<br />

Although <strong>the</strong> witnesses did not compare c<strong>in</strong>checona <strong>and</strong> capac status, we<br />

can. The <strong>Inca</strong>s claimed capac status <strong>and</strong> tell us that <strong>the</strong>re were o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Andes who made similar claims. Capac status appears to have been l<strong>in</strong>ked<br />

with a solar supernatural <strong>and</strong> was calculated genealogically. Not only <strong>the</strong><br />

person who proved that <strong>the</strong>y were capac by emerg<strong>in</strong>g victorious on <strong>the</strong><br />

battlefield, but a whole group <strong>of</strong> people had a vested <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> preserv<strong>in</strong>g this status. <strong>War</strong>fare was a test <strong>of</strong> capac status, so a large<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestment was made <strong>in</strong> obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g victories. The <strong>Inca</strong>s must have shown<br />

prowess dur<strong>in</strong>g engagements with those who decided to fight <strong>the</strong>m -though<br />

we can f<strong>in</strong>d very little <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> written sources about skill or ferocity (except at<br />

times when <strong>the</strong> ferocity <strong>of</strong> women is mentioned). What we learn about is <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>vention <strong>of</strong> ritual displays. The <strong>Inca</strong>s -like <strong>the</strong> Chancas before <strong>the</strong>m- used a<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> march<strong>in</strong>g formation that represented <strong>the</strong> march <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sun across <strong>the</strong><br />

sky. Presumably, this movement reflected <strong>the</strong> claim to some k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong><br />

genealogical tie to this supernatural. A victory -<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir army had to be<br />

victorious- allowed <strong>the</strong>m an opportunity to create a performance that would<br />

aga<strong>in</strong> reflect <strong>the</strong>ir capac status. The Sangaguaci, or place where prisoners<br />

were fed to wild animals, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Llaxahuaci, or place where war trophies<br />

were displayed, were rem<strong>in</strong>ders to <strong>the</strong> important elites who visited Cuzco <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> demonstrations <strong>of</strong> capac status. O<strong>the</strong>r memorials were left at battle sites<br />

for <strong>the</strong> same purpose. Like <strong>the</strong> Chanca lord who was delighted when<br />

presented with <strong>the</strong> opportunity for an easy victory, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Inca</strong>s needed to fight<br />

<strong>and</strong> w<strong>in</strong>, but an easy victory was a great gift, because a lot was lost if an army<br />

suffered defeat. The <strong>Inca</strong>s needed to fight <strong>and</strong> w<strong>in</strong> -on occasion. <strong>Peace</strong>ful<br />

submission <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> subsequent enlargement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Inca</strong> army, was also a<br />

great gift. While we cannot say how frequent <strong>the</strong> choice between war <strong>and</strong><br />

peace was <strong>of</strong>fered before <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Inca</strong> expansion, we can be more<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> that this choice was a fundamental part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Inca</strong> conquest. <strong>Peace</strong>,<br />
