• Exchange assessment and design recommendations for Silicon Valley Bank. As a follow-up to the Microsoft
standard Exchange Health Check procedure, performed Exchange infrastructure assessment focusing on several
areas as requested by customer. Reviewed and analyzed early design proposals for the new site-redundant messaging
design (two sites, Exchange 2003 front-end/back-end topology, clustering, site resiliency, EMC and HDS
storage design and layout, secure access for external clients); provided guidelines and recommendations based
on Microsoft best practices and personal experience.
• SQL Server 2000/2005 Analysis and Architecture for Levi Strauss & Co. Together with application/development
consultant we assessed existing database services infrastructure (more than 300 databases
hosted by ~15 SQL Server instances for various applications), analyzed application architecture and requirements,
conducted detailed performance analysis, provided server design for the new 64-bit (IBM eServer x366) SQL
Server 2005 clustered environment with EMC CLARiiON CX700 SAN storage, formulated requirements for both
SQL 2005 and SQL 2000 cluster systems, performed actual installations of both 64-bit and 32-bit SQL Server
2005 clusters.
• Active Directory and Exchange consolidation for California State Automobile Association (CSAA). After the
merger with Western United CSAA needed a consolidation solution. I analyzed and assessed existing directory
(Windows 2003) and messaging (Exchange 2003) services infrastructure, provided recommendations and proposed
high level design options for the consolidated environment.
• SQL Server 2000 clustering for Edwards Life Sciences. Installed and configured 64-bit (IBM eServer x460)
Windows 2003 based SQL Server 2000 active/passive cluster for the mission critical JDE database. Provided
team training on SQL Server clustering. Provided recommendations on cluster and SQL Server configuration and
performance optimization.
• Exchange infrastructure assessment for Wells Fargo Bank. Performed discovery and assessment for Exchange
2000 based messaging infrastructure at Wells Fargo (150,000 users with projected growth to 200,000).
Analyzed server and storage configuration (HP ProLiant BL20p blade servers, Hitachi Lightning 9980V SAN storage)
and conducted performance analysis based on MOM implementation and perfmon logs. Identified configuration
issues, risk factors, and proposed remediation steps and design recommendations for the new Exchange
2003 based environment. Created an executive presentation and detailed assessment and recommendations
document.
• Exchange 2003 SP2 rollout plan for Marriott. Performed infrastructure assessment for the existing Exchange
2003 based messaging environment at Marriott (95,000 users), analyzed risks and created a testing and deployment
plan for Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2.
• Exchange 2003 architecture and design for Autodesk. Performed initial discovery and assessment for the existing
Exchange 2000-based infrastructure. Analyzed business and technical requirements and architected three
potential design proposals based on stand-alone and clustered Exchange installations for 15,000 users with servers
consolidated in three company datacenters. Performed capacity and performance based storage planning for
EMC CLARiiON CX700 SAN storage. Created vision and scope document, detailed design and architecture plan,
capacity and performance planning document, cluster design document.
• Exchange 2003 consolidation, cluster installation, and migration planning for Levi Strauss & Co. Designed
and documented the 3-node (Active/Active/Passive) Exchange 2003 cluster installation for 5,000 users. Created
consolidation plan, server and storage configuration (IBM eServer x445, EMC CLARiiON CX700 SAN), naming
conventions and cluster configuration, installation scenario, simulation testing plan, pilot migration plan, disaster
recovery plan. Conducted performance analysis to determine server capacity and performance requirements. Built
Exchange cluster, configured Exchange resources, performed initial troubleshooting and failover testing.
• Exchange 2003 public folders migration for Charles Schwab. Used InterOrg public folders replication tool to
help migrating public folders across different Exchange 2003 organizations. Other tools involved: PubMerge,
PFDavAdmin, Exprofre, mailbox migration wizard, LoadSim 2003, etc. Set up a lab to build the proof of concept
and demo the required functionality to the customer.
July 2004 – July 2005 Senior Windows / Exchange Administrator, Google, Inc. , Mountain View, CA, USA
At Google, I was member of Windows Operations team responsible for all Microsoft servers infrastructure, with specialization
in Exchange.
• Ongoing Exchange administration and maintenance. Was fully responsible for supporting Google Exchange
2003 SP1 servers (increased number of servers from 1 to 9), performing backup and recovery, resolving client issues.
Clients included Outlook in MAPI, RPC over HTTPS, IMAP, and POP modes, OWA, Entourage (Mac Exchange
client), Blackberry PDA handhelds.
