• Exchange assessment and design recommendations for Silicon Valley Bank. As a follow-up to the Microsoft<br />

standard Exchange Health Check procedure, performed Exchange infrastructure assessment focusing on several<br />

areas as requested by customer. Reviewed and analyzed early design proposals for the new site-redundant messaging<br />

design (two sites, Exchange 2003 front-end/back-end topology, clustering, site resiliency, EMC and HDS<br />

storage design and layout, secure access for external clients); provided guidelines and recommendations based<br />

on Microsoft best practices and personal experience.<br />

• SQL Server 2000/2005 Analysis and Architecture for Levi Strauss & Co. Together with application/development<br />

consultant we assessed existing database services infrastructure (more than 300 databases<br />

hosted by ~15 SQL Server instances for various applications), analyzed application architecture and requirements,<br />

conducted detailed performance analysis, provided server design for the new 64-bit (IBM eServer x366) SQL<br />

Server 2005 clustered environment with EMC CLARiiON CX700 SAN storage, formulated requirements for both<br />

SQL 2005 and SQL 2000 cluster systems, performed actual installations of both 64-bit and 32-bit SQL Server<br />

2005 clusters.<br />

• Active Directory and Exchange consolidation for California State Automobile Association (CSAA). After the<br />

merger with Western United CSAA needed a consolidation solution. I analyzed and assessed existing directory<br />

(Windows 2003) and messaging (Exchange 2003) services infrastructure, provided recommendations and proposed<br />

high level design options for the consolidated environment.<br />

• SQL Server 2000 clustering for Edwards Life Sciences. Installed and configured 64-bit (IBM eServer x460)<br />

Windows 2003 based SQL Server 2000 active/passive cluster for the mission critical JDE database. Provided<br />

team training on SQL Server clustering. Provided recommendations on cluster and SQL Server configuration and<br />

performance optimization.<br />

• Exchange infrastructure assessment for Wells Fargo Bank. Performed discovery and assessment for Exchange<br />

2000 based messaging infrastructure at Wells Fargo (150,000 users with projected growth to 200,000).<br />

Analyzed server and storage configuration (HP ProLiant BL20p blade servers, Hitachi Lightning 9980V SAN storage)<br />

and conducted performance analysis based on MOM implementation and perfmon logs. Identified configuration<br />

issues, risk factors, and proposed remediation steps and design recommendations for the new Exchange<br />

2003 based environment. Created an executive presentation and detailed assessment and recommendations<br />

document.<br />

• Exchange 2003 SP2 rollout plan for Marriott. Performed infrastructure assessment for the existing Exchange<br />

2003 based messaging environment at Marriott (95,000 users), analyzed risks and created a testing and deployment<br />

plan for Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2.<br />

• Exchange 2003 architecture and design for Autodesk. Performed initial discovery and assessment for the existing<br />

Exchange 2000-based infrastructure. Analyzed business and technical requirements and architected three<br />

potential design proposals based on stand-alone and clustered Exchange installations for 15,000 users with servers<br />

consolidated in three company datacenters. Performed capacity and performance based storage planning for<br />

EMC CLARiiON CX700 SAN storage. Created vision and scope document, detailed design and architecture plan,<br />

capacity and performance planning document, cluster design document.<br />

• Exchange 2003 consolidation, cluster installation, and migration planning for Levi Strauss & Co. Designed<br />

and documented the 3-node (Active/Active/Passive) Exchange 2003 cluster installation for 5,000 users. Created<br />

consolidation plan, server and storage configuration (IBM eServer x445, EMC CLARiiON CX700 SAN), naming<br />

conventions and cluster configuration, installation scenario, simulation testing plan, pilot migration plan, disaster<br />

recovery plan. Conducted performance analysis to determine server capacity and performance requirements. Built<br />

Exchange cluster, configured Exchange resources, performed initial troubleshooting and failover testing.<br />

• Exchange 2003 public folders migration for Charles Schwab. Used InterOrg public folders replication tool to<br />

help migrating public folders across different Exchange 2003 organizations. Other tools involved: PubMerge,<br />

PFDavAdmin, Exprofre, mailbox migration wizard, LoadSim 2003, etc. Set up a lab to build the proof of concept<br />

and demo the required functionality to the customer.<br />

At Google, I was member of Windows Operations team responsible for all Microsoft servers infrastructure, with specialization<br />

in Exchange.<br />

• Ongoing Exchange administration and maintenance. Was fully responsible for supporting Google Exchange<br />

2003 SP1 servers (increased number of servers from 1 to 9), performing backup and recovery, resolving client issues.<br />

Clients included Outlook in MAPI, RPC over HTTPS, IMAP, and POP modes, OWA, Entourage (Mac Exchange<br />

client), Blackberry PDA handhelds.<br />

• Exchange disaster recovery. During two Exchange outages caused by hardware (disk) failures, performed full<br />

Exchange disaster recovery using dial-tone database method and RSG (Recovery Storage Group) feature.<br />

• General Exchange design. Initial Exchange environment used internal server storage not suitable for production<br />

needs and impossible to scale. As a tech lead, architected and fully redesigned Exchange 2003 infrastructure to<br />

support fast growing environment (scaling from 500 to 5,000 to 30,000 users). Designed storage solution, frontend/back-end<br />

topology, distributed sites infrastructure, back-end active/passive cluster, secure access for external<br />

clients (using ISA Server in a DMZ), custom mail routing scheme, OpenLDAP based address book support, antivirus<br />

protection, backup policy and disaster recovery plan;<br />

• SAN storage solution. Researched and evaluated several possible SAN implementations for Exchange (HP EVA,<br />

EMC CLARiiON, NetApp FAS). Performed capacity and performance planning, designed local and remote replication<br />

scenarios and DR plan. Conducted proof of concept sessions with EMC, HP, and NetApp. Finalized recommendations<br />

in the design document.<br />

• Exchange archiving solution. Researched and evaluated several archiving products (Veritas/KVS Enterprise<br />

Vault, Zantaz EAS, EMC/Legato EmailXtender, OpenText/IXOS LiveLink, CommVault Data Archiver, Mimosa<br />

NearPoint, HP RISS). Extensively worked with vendors on technical discussions and specifications, reference calls<br />

etc. Finalized group recommendations for the archiving solution in the design document.<br />

• Load balanced front-end. Designed, built, and configured load balanced front-end Exchange servers using NLB.<br />

• RPC over HTTPS. Designed, implemented, and configured RPC over HTTPS support based on front-end/backend<br />

Exchange infrastructure, for external clients.<br />

• Blackberry support. Administered and maintained Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) to provide Exchange services<br />

to Blackberry PDA handhelds. Was troubleshooting various Blackberry issues.<br />

• Active Directory administration. Administered and maintained Google’s Active Directory. Created and supported<br />

multiple GPO (group policy objects). Managed groups, accounts, permissions, profiles, etc.<br />

• Windows XP SP2 deployment. Participated in a company wide SP2 deployment to several thousand machines in<br />

15 countries. This included design of domain and standard profiles, firewall policies, etc.<br />

• Daily Windows infrastructure support and maintenance. On a daily basis, was resolving various issues in support<br />

tickets escalated to Windows operations group.<br />

Mar. 2004 – June 2004 Senior IT / Exchange Engineer, Mimosa Systems, Inc. , Santa Clara, CA, USA<br />

Mimosa Systems provides NearPoint — a new emerging online backup/recovery, archiving, and life cycle management<br />

solution for Exchange.<br />

• Exchange servers’ installation and maintenance. In production, development, and test areas designed, installed<br />

and configured several Exchange 2000 and 2003 servers (including active/passive cluster installations on<br />

ProLiant DL380 cluster with MSA 500 storage), maintained users and mailboxes. Performed multiple<br />

backup/recovery operations as well as disaster recoveries. Was troubleshooting Exchange and Active Directory related<br />

issues.<br />

• Exchange performance analysis and benchmarking. Designed and implemented scenarios for Exchange performance<br />

analysis as part of NearPoint server performance research. Email MAPI operations were simulated using<br />

LoadSim tool with MMB2 and MMB3 benchmarks. Results were used in optimizing NearPoint backup engine.<br />

• Exchange market analysis. Performed business analysis of Exchange server market for medium size businesses<br />

(100 – 5,000 users) – investigated typical Exchange implementations, server configuration, production workload<br />

and trends. Results were used in designing NearPoint scalability and defining product requirements.<br />

• Multihomed network solution. Investigated, designed and proposed redundant ISP connectivity solution for Mimosa<br />

multihomed network.<br />

Aug. 2000 – Mar. 2004 Senior Systems Engineer, First Virtual Communications, Santa Clara & Redwood<br />

City, CA, USA<br />

FVC (acquired by RADVISION in 2005) offers enterprise scale video- and web-conferencing solutions for TCP/IP,<br />

ISDN, and ATM networks, with IIS based ASP front-end using Windows 2000 Active Directory and SQL Server databases<br />

built on MS Cluster Server at Compaq clusters with SCSI RAID. The enterprise solution (ClickToMeet) also<br />

includes gateways, Cisco gatekeepers / proxies, multipoint control units (MCUs), and video end points.<br />

• Performance analysis and optimization. At Microsoft Performance Analysis and Research Center (PARC) in<br />

Redmond, WA, worked together with MS experts to analyze application performance (including stress testing), optimize<br />

product design and investigate compatibility with Windows Server 2003.<br />

• Design and implementation of video-conferencing server systems. Elaborated Windows 2000 based solutions<br />

with installation, configuration and support of SQL Server, IIS, and multi-tier FVC server software. Implemented<br />

several Active Directory models with dynamic DNS for different installation scenarios, including multi-tree<br />

forests with customized schema and trust relationships. Designed several architectural components and ports diagrams<br />

for FVC multi-tier application server.<br />

• Cluster implementation for high availability solution. Designed and implemented cluster solutions based on<br />

SQL Server 2000, Microsoft Cluster Server and Compaq CL cluster hardware (using shared SCSI RAID or SAN<br />

storage). Wrote installation guides for implementing High Availability solution for FVC application server and configuring<br />

operating system and server applications. Performed cluster maintenance/troubleshooting.<br />

• SQL Cluster DataCenter installation. This short time contract was performed for MirrorPlus Technologies<br />

(http://www.mirrorplus.com). Built two datacenter Compaq clusters (ProLiant 8500R and ML530), based on Windows<br />

2000 Advanced Server, from scratch, configured network for clustering, installed and configured SQL Server<br />

2000 cluster, created and tuned all necessary cluster resources. Both clusters were using Compaq StorageWorks<br />

SAN storage with RAID 10 configured hardware RAID.<br />

• Cisco routers / proxies integration. Designed and implemented Cisco interoperability solution using Cisco MCM<br />

gatekeeper / proxy servers (based on Cisco 26xx / 36xx routers) for managing V 2 oIP networks with directory gatekeepers,<br />

H.323 proxies, and QoS. Designed several integration solutions for different multi-zone scenarios used<br />

by customers. Contributed into designing proxy and zones support in FVC server.<br />

• Installation and support of customer servers. Working in a team (Professional Services group), implemented<br />

FVC solutions for customers, built single and cluster servers, installed and configured all software, performed problems<br />

troubleshooting. Successfully implemented and supported FVC servers for AT&T, Verizon, EDS, Goldman<br />

Sachs, EMBC, GCC, VIA Networks, CalTrans. Performed phone-based consulting and remote troubleshooting, -<br />

last example was spyware detection and cleanup at Verizon and AT&T servers.<br />

• Security lockdown for FVC server solution. Designed, implemented and documented the security lockdown<br />

proposal for FVC application servers to protect from viruses, eliminate spyware and minimize hackers’ intrusions.<br />

This included reconfiguration of anonymous web application accounts for IIS 5.0.<br />

• FVC server quality assurance. As a senior engineer in the Engineering & QA Department, was involved in a<br />

high-level white box QA testing for FVC server components. Major accomplishments were in the installation and<br />

gatekeeper testing. Participated in the product design and architecture and contributed into database development<br />

and gatekeeper server development for FVC server.<br />

• Video End Points Certification. This senior QA project included design, implementation and maintenance of the<br />

endpoints Certification Lab – to test video end points for interoperability with FVC software. I had designed the<br />

testing specifications, the general test plan, and elaborated five detailed test cases for comprehensive video end<br />

points testing. Performed actual QA testing of more than 10 different video end points.<br />

• Network administration and troubleshooting. Worked with IT department to troubleshoot Windows 2000 and<br />

NT 4.0 server and network problems, primarily DHCP / DNS / WINS, VPN / NAT / firewall and different TCP/IP issues.<br />

Helped in troubleshooting Exchange 5.5 server. Participated in implementing the merge of two corporate<br />

networks (500+ nodes) in CA and NH and migration from NT 4.0 to Windows 2000. Contributed to design and implementation<br />

of the company’s intranet.<br />

• Training support & engineering staff. Designed, wrote and conducted series of seminars and presentations for<br />

FVC engineers on different subjects like ISDN, Windows 2000 Active Directory, Windows 2000 security/encryption,<br />

MS Cluster server, Cisco gatekeeper/proxy software, SQL database maintenance.<br />

Stack Ltd. is a large systems integrator and ISP, specializing in building enterprise network solutions for corporate customers,<br />

• Installation and configuration of the firewall secured intranet subnetwork. Used IIS 4.0 and Proxy 2.0 to build<br />

several Web sites with secure gateway to the Internet. For intranet needs, a SQL Server 7.0 was installed. Clients<br />

(internal and external) used ASP pages and ISAPI applications to interact with SQL databases.<br />

• Design, building and configuration of a web-based Information Center. Designed a Web-enabled Terminal<br />

server providing terminal access to Windows 2000 server with information database installed. Project was based<br />

on Citrix MetaFrame server; terminal sessions were initialized from web client interface.<br />

Nov. 1995 - Sep. 1997 Systems Engineer, Stack Ltd. Education Center, Tomsk, Russia<br />

• Design, installation and configuration of education center network. Project included IP and IPX routing<br />

scheme, NT-Novell gateway, RAS support. The result configuration provided quick class reconfiguration, including<br />

scripted reinstallation of the operating system and applications, restoration of trust relationships, user and groups<br />

rights and privileges, Internet access and messaging accounts.<br />

• Delivery of Microsoft Official Curriculum courses. Stack Ltd. is Microsoft Certified Technical Education Center<br />

(MS CTEC); as a Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT), I was delivering various courses mostly on Windows NT 4.0<br />

and TCP/IP (most popular classes were 922, 803, 688, 689, 798, and 955). More than 20 of my students on<br />

course completion successfully passed all necessary exams and became <strong>MCSE</strong>.<br />

• Organization, installation and configuration of Authorized Prometric Testing Center (by contract with Sylvan<br />

Prometric). This project was very important because our center was only the third in the whole former Soviet Union.<br />

Having signed the Agreement, we installed necessary hardware, mounted the network, installed and configured<br />

NetWare server and client software and vendor programs used for testing. One of the tasks was to implement<br />

and maintain 24x7 X.25 protocol communications with Prometric central hub in Minneapolis.<br />
