What it does offer, however, is an opportunity to watch Helen Mirren sink her teeth into the role of Queen Elizabeth II (after she’d already devoured Elizabeth I in the HBO series Elizabeth I ). Director Stephen Frears seems to realize that the fi lm itself works on only two levels: as a vehicle for Mirren’s Oscar-winning performance, and as an evisceration of the Royal Family (a perennial punching bag), and so Frears controls the fi lm accordingly, allowing Mirren plenty of screen time (the fi lm is called The Queen , after all), and mak- our little world is now online: cascadiaweekly.com fi lm times reviews dvd REVIEW ing sure to capture every scathing jab at the monarchy. Following Elizabeth II in the wake of Princess Diana’s death, The Queen doesn’t offer much information that wasn’t already available, and it certainly doesn’t offer much unique insight into the psyche of Elizabeth II, but it is an entertaining and, at times, touching portrait of a polarizing, revered political fi gure. There’s not nearly enough of that going around in cinema these days and for that, Frears and his cast deserved all of the credit, if not necessarily the awards. While Shia LaBeouf is no Jimmy Stewart, he’s certainly an engaging actor in his own right. (PG-13 • 1 hr. 44 min.) Bellis Fair 1:50 | 4:25 | 7:00 | 9:35 The Condemned: Ten people are chosen to be dropped on a remote island where they will fi ght each other to the death. The winner gets to leave with his life. Sunset Square 1:15 | 4:00 | 7:30 | 10:05 Fracture: Anthony Hopkins, channeling Hannibal Lector but without the craving for cannibalism, stars as a man who murders his cheating wife, then has to win a battle of wits with Ryan Gosling in order to get away with it. Bellis Fair 2:00 | 4:50 | 7:30 | 10:10 Grindhouse: Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez team up to create a cinematic slam-dunk of back-to-back feature-length tributes to stylized violence, foxy women and all the other distinctive characteristics that make grindhouse fi lms memorable. Sehome 3:10 | 9:35 The Hoax: Richard Gere, in his best performance in years, plays Clifford Irving, a man who fools the nation into believing his tell-all about Howard Hughes was written with the help of the famous recluse himself. The only piece of information about this police caper worth knowing is that it is brought to you by the same team of geniuses responsible for Shaun of the Dead. (R • 2 hrs. 1 min.) Sehome 1:00 | 3:50 | 7:15 | 10:00 In the Land of Women: Adam Brody plays a otherwise-intelligent man who is clueless about love and confused about women. How very Seth Cohen of him. Bellis Fair 2:10 | 4:40 | 7:10 | 9:40 The Invisible: A talented writer is murdered and must labor in limbo to solve the mystery of who killed him before his time somehow “runs out.” If the fi lmmakers can’t fi gure out the fl aws inherent in this plot, I’m certainly not going to point them out. (PG-13 • 1 hr. 37 min.) Bellis Fair 2:30 | 5:05 | 7:40 | 10:15 Kickin’ it Old Skool: This movie stars Jamie Kennedy—and his singularly annoying brand of comedy—as a former breakdance champ who wants to get the dance troupe back together after awakening from a 20year-long coma. Expect unfunny mining of various tired ‘80s fads and clichés. (PG- 13 • 1 hr. 47 min.) Sehome 12:45 | 3:30 | 7:30 | 10:15 The Lookout: Joseph Gordon-Levitt proves he is no fl ash in the indie pan with yet another stellar performance, this time as a memory-addled kid seduced into helping to pull a bank heist. Pickford 8:45 Meet the Robinsons: The second non-Pixar feature from the House of Mouse revolves around abandoned boy genius Lewis, whose quest for his birthmother is put on hold when he’s time-machined into the future by a member of the eponymous mega-clan. (G • 1 hr. 32 min.) Bellis Fair 2:05 | 4:45 | 7:20 | 10:00 Next: Nicolas Cage stars as a man able to see into the future, so, of course, he’s called upon to use his gifts to save the world. Bellis Fair 2:50 | 5:20 | 7:50 | 10:20 Perfect Stranger: If, as the preview for this movie suggests, Halle Berry plays hero and Bruce Willis plays villain, who then, plays Cousin Larry and Balki Bartokomous? Bellis Fair 4:40 | 9:50 300: This faithful and decadently violent adaptation of Frank Miller’s legendary graphic novel tells the story of the 300 Spartans who fought the Battle of Thermopylae. Sehome 12:30 | 7:00 Vacancy: This run-of-the-mill horror fl ick about a couple terrorized at an out-of-theway hotel should be elevated by the presence of Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson.
