ERICKSEN’S
‘MISLEADERSHIP’
Happily for kids who live in
Washington State, last week
our legislature passed the
Healthy Youth Act, which mandates
that public schools that
choose to teach sex education
must use a comprehensive,
medically accurate curriculum.
However, I was very
disappointed that Rep. Doug
Ericksen used his fl oor time to
oppose the Healthy Youth Act,
claiming this was a “Seattle issue”
and that he had not heard
from anyone in his district regarding
this bill.
In fact, 50 of his constituents
signed postcards asking
for his support of the Healthy
Youth Act. A delegation of
constituents from the 42nd
District went to meet with him
in Olympia, but he cancelled
the meeting, leaving us with no
other option but to leave materials
about the bill with his
staff. I personally sent him a
handwritten note about the bill
letters
table of contents credits letters
after he cancelled his meeting
with us, and I also sent him
several emails regarding the
issue. I know others from our
district have contacted him as
well. Not only did Ericksen ignore
his constituents’ support
of the issue of medically accurate
sex education, but he also
lied during the debate.
—Lisa Van Doren, Bellingham
We just learned our representative,
Doug Ericksen, has lied
about not receiving constituent
support for the Healthy Youth
Act. We are completely outraged.
Rep. Ericksen’s claims during
the sex-ed bill debate are
willfully inaccurate. We both
traveled to Olympia on Feb. 12,
crossing two international borders
to do so, just to meet with
our legislators and let them
know of our support for the bill.
We didn’t meet with Rep. Ericksen
because he claimed to be
out of town, yet that same day
he was seen at the capital. If he
did not want to meet with his
constituents, he should have
told us so.
Instead, because he told us he
was out-of-town, we left written
notes with our personal contact
information indicating that we
live in Point Roberts, his district,
stating our support for the
Healthy Youth Act and family
planning funding. How dare he
imply that medically accurate
sex education is a “Seattle issue”
when there has been considerable
support within the 42nd
District for this legislation. In
fact, we witnessed 50 postcards
from his constituents in support
of the Healthy Youth Act being
delivered to his offi ce while we
were leaving our personal notes.
We also phoned and emailed his
offi ce prior to our visit stating
our support of the Healthy Youth
Act. Not only did Rep. Ericksen
wantonly ignore his constituents’
support for medically accurate
sex education, he deliberately
lied during the debate that
he had not heard from us.
