May I Have A Word With You
To the Young People of Agudas Achim
How Jewish is body piercing? While pierced ears have long been common, a
growing number of people today pierce noses, navels and even tongues. What does
Halakha, Jewish Law, have to say about body piercing?
As you know, our Tanakh makes reference to nose rings and earrings. We also know
that Jewish law prohibits one from hitting and wounding others. The Talmud (Baba
Kama 91b) records a debate whether it is permitted for someone to wound himself.
The great majority of medieval authorities accept the opinion that self-wounding is
forbidden. At first glance, this law is perplexing. It seems reasonable to prohibit
someone from injuring another person when he/she objects; that is a breach of
another’s fundamental rights. However, why would Halakha prohibit self-wounding? For the simple reason
that our Rabbis taught that a person is not the master of his/her own body. God is the one who grants life and
maintains full rights to the human body. “The Lord gives and the Lord takes” is not a mere phrase, but rather a
statement of fact: God owns our body. Consequently, self-inflicted wounds and suicide are forbidden because
the human body belongs to God, not to us.
The prohibition against wounding would seem to preclude body piercing. But it isn’t that simple. Not all
wounding is prohibited. If a doctor needs to operate on someone, the operation is permitted even though the
doctor will wound the patient in the process. This is because wounding for therapeutic purposes is allowed. In
evaluating the permissibility of body piercing, we must ask the following question: Is wounding for reasons of
beauty allowed?
New rabbinic response has concluded that the reason wounding is allowed for a therapeutic purpose is because
health considerations are so important they outweigh any prohibition against wounding. However, wounding
for the sake of beauty is far less important, and would not be allowed. In addition, it is improper to tamper
with the body God gave us; it is God’s will for us to look the way we look naturally. Nonetheless, there is a
different approach. Rabbi Moshe Feinstein (Iggrot Moshe Choshen Mishpat 2:65-66) argues that the reason
wounding is allowed for surgery and other therapeutic purposes is because it is intended to benefit the person
being wounded. He notes the Maimonides writes that the prohibition against wounding is only applicable
when it is intended to cause pain and degrade the body. Wounding for the purposes of beauty (e.g., plastic
surgery) would be allowed.
Clearly, Halakha takes any wounding of the body, even if it is self-inflicted, very seriously. It sees the body as
belonging to God and would prohibit any masochistic behavior. There is even a debate if wounding is
allowable for the sake of beauty. If the body piercing is done solely for the sake of beauty, there would be a
debate about its permissibility. However, if it were to be done to associate with a subculture of masochism and
self-destruction, it would violate the prohibition against wounding! Think very carefully before you consider
piercing your body to help you find the right answer for yourself.
Have a great summer; remember it is very important to me that you remain loyal to our Jewish values and
rituals. All the best to you and your family, my blessings to y’all.
Thinking of doing more for your synagogue?
We have opportunities available. Consider the possibility of greeting guests and members on Shabbat, reading
Torah, assisting as a Gabbai, leading a portion of the service or accepting an Aliyah. Let us know of your
willingness to participate just a bit more.
Kol Shira
With the joyous holiday of Pesach behind us—z’man cheiruteinu, the “time of our
freedom”—now a distant memory (though in reality only a few weeks ago), we count
the days, literally and figuratively, until the Festival of Shavuot—z’man matan
torateiun—the “time of the giving of the Torah.” Our tradition’s historical view of the
Exodus from Egypt teaches us valuable lessons, which our cyclical religious calendar
reinforces: freedom is perhaps not the ultimate goal, but only the beginning of our
journey, which provides the impetus to learn about ourselves as a nation, as a people,
as a part of Am Yisrael, collectively and as individuals, within the community. As we
annually read in the Torah, the singular event of Moses’ leading of the Children of
Israel out of Egypt is only the beginning of our story, for the path to the restoration of
our ancestors to the Land of Israel, fraught with a multitude of physical, emotional and
psychological obstacles, provides us with both challenges and tools that enable us to
become who we are going to be, instead of who we think we are when we leave, played out in the next three
books of the Torah!
Traditionally, we mark this transitional time of year through the daily counting of the omer (a unit of grain) in
the fifty successive days between Pesach and Shavuot, the transformative time between our freedom from the
Exodus, and our collective and individual enlightenment that culminates in the giving of the Torah at Mt.
Sinai. During this time our commemoration of a series of more recent historical events—including Yom
Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day), Yom Hazikaron (Israel Remembrance Day) and Yom Ha'atzma'ut (Israeli
Independence Day)—reinforces our commitment and passion toward our communal destiny, as the people
Israel becoming the nation Israel, through Torah.
Among the ways that we as a community connected with Jews in San Antonio, and all over the world, was
through the meaningful community commemorations and celebrations that took place right here at
Congregation Agudas Achim and at the JCC Campus, where I had the distinct honor to chant the unique El
malei rachamim (God Full of Compassion), a special version of the memorial prayer offered during this
emotionally packed, two-week period that reminds us of the cost of freedom, and of our persistent longing for
it, which culminates in the celebration of Shavuot.
This period also coincides with our Confirmation Class’s participation in Erev Shavuot Services on Thursday
night, May 18 th at 7:00 p.m., when our 10 th grade students will affirm their many years of educational
commitment as members of our Congregation through their study at our own Inda Posner Religious School, as
they lead the Shalosh Regalim Evening Service. Over the past number of months I have “religiously” met with
our students to assist them in the learning of the special nusach (traditional modes and melodies) for Shavuot
so that they might approach this milestone with a firm knowledge of and a connection to hundreds of years of
liturgical tradition. Come and celebrate with the community as we mark this simcha in our students’ and their
families’ lives.
During the week of May 2 nd through 6 th I will travel to New York City to represent our Congregation at the
Cantors Assembly’s International Convention and Annual Meeting at the Jewish Theological Seminary. As
many of you know, I have served the Cantors Assembly in a number of capacities over the years, both at
regional and national levels, including Chair of the Western Region, Director of the Cantors Assembly
Ensemble, Member of the Executive Council, Chair of the Education Committee and Chair of the Long Range
Planning Committee. At this year’s meeting I will be honored as I receive the distinction of being named a
Cantors Assembly Scholar, a new professional award in recognition of my ongoing commitment to research,
teaching and performance on behalf of the Jewish Community. I look forward to having the opportunity to
exchange ideas with my colleagues, but most especially, I look forward to sharing the fruits of our labor with
all of you, when I return to my physical and spiritual home here in San Antonio!
Message From the Executive Director
According to Webster’s New World Dictionary of the American Language, Second
College Edition, recreate means “to restore, refresh, create anew, to put fresh life into,
restore in body or mind, as after work, by some sort of play, amusement or relaxation.”
Somehow, I can easily associate this singular word with the concept of vacation as there
does appear to be a direct correlation between the two, particularly as we near the
warmer months and the time when school lets out. We begin planning how our children
will spend their vacation by reviewing possibilities of sending them to various camps,
taking escorted trips or having them spend the time with family. Many individuals also
begin planning their time away from work, their time to refresh and restore, their time to cleanse and then to
return to work with renewed energy, direction and a changed outlook on all tasks that lie ahead. Naturally,
those who have not yet retired know that their first few days will be spent putting out fires and catching up on
what needs to be accomplished. Those who consider themselves retired also understand that there will also be
issues that will need to be addressed upon their return. Time away from work, from the typical stress of our
everyday existence, is important. It allows for the space needed to observe what has been accomplished, what
may need to be accomplished, items that may need to change or issues that will need to be resolved. This
observation period is really a clearing of the mind, allowing one to re-create and return with an optimistic
approach. We all need to take a break, change a routine, observe from afar and make necessary changes.
I can associate the idea of recreate and how this can apply to our activity within the synagogue. Sitting in the
synagogue affords one the opportunity of sanctuary, of putting fresh life into the week that has past or the one
we are about to begin. We have the ability to restore in body or mind, a portion of self that had not been
available during the work week. We can give ourselves a chance of spiritual renewal, or at a more basic level,
the occasion to not permit the outside world to impact us, if but for a few moments. We can isolate ourselves,
clear the mind of life’s obstacles and seek a different level of relaxation. We can also avail ourselves of the
interaction with extended family members, discussing issues that may be of interest, or in just light
conversation with individuals sharing a commonality.
I knew an individual who would carve out a few minutes of each day just to sit and clear his mind. This
became almost a ritualistic occurrence, but one that appeared to have a positive result on his activities. It may
be a positive experience if we were to take a few minutes each day, or a few hours each week, to set aside the
time to relax, refocus and renew. We do have daily services at the synagogue that would allow for this
opportunity, and I am certain you would feel welcome.
President’s Remarks
It’s my job as President to insure the
future security and well-being of our
congregation. We’ve been a
congregation for 120 years as we
c el eb r at ed that monum ental
anniversary last March. It is now our
task to continue on the successes we
have experienced over all those years.
Prudent management, generous
giving, and successful fundraising are major keys to
insure we will be around for the next 120 years. We
are very fortunate to have the management team in
place over-seeing our day to day operations observing
all facets of the congregation to make sure we are a
lean, mean, operating synagogue. Believe it or not,
we try to watch our expenses very closely. Operating
a synagogue of our size with our beautiful building,
excellent clergy, and fine educational opportunities
for our children cannot be achieved if we didn’t have
a committed membership.
Over these past few months I have met many
members that I didn’t know before and am very
happy with the comments they have about our
synagogue. You would think that the office of
President would be a thankless job full of complaints
and disgruntled members, but it’s quite the contrary.
I always get a laugh from our members who I see at
Shabbat services who say they came to services to see
if I’m there. I am proud to announce that I have
become a regular. I find attending services on a
regular basis has brought me a lot closer to my faith.
Just reading the Torah portion in English each week
has been most rewarding and has answered many
questions that I had about Judaism in the past. I also
enjoy watching our members as they participate in all
the various aspects of the service. We invite all our
members to participate at whatever level they feel
comfortable. My goal is to one day stand in front of
the Torah and read a Torah portion.
Now back to the long-term success of our
congregation. Another goal I have set is to build our
endowments. We are very fortunate to have the
endowments that we have thus far. Just a few short
years ago our endowments were in jeopardy, but with
the hard work of our dedicated board they are not
only stable, but are also now separated from the
synagogue’s operational account. A strong
endowment insures the future security of our shul.
I am happy to announce our newest endowment
created by the generous donation of our long-time
members Bertie and Selig Frank. It will be called the
Bertie and Selig Frank Endowment Fund and will
have funds available to help send our teachers and
students to Israel to learn about their heritage and
history. On behalf of the congregation I want to
thank Bertie and Selig for their generosity to the
synagogue in setting up this fund. The wing between
the Cohen Rotunda and the Gurinsky Social Hall will
now carry the name of Bertie and Selig.
There are other funds available to help our children
offset costs for travel and fees to attend camp, travel
to Israel and attend other Jewish educational
conventions and seminars. One of the funds is the Si
Alexander Scholarship fund. It was established to
offer scholarship money to our children to attend
various Jewish lifecycle events. These funds are out
there, and who that are interested in obtaining a
scholarship should contact the synagogue office for
assistance and an application to receive scholarship
money. I would like to thank Steve and Joanie
Pechenik for establishing this fund for our children.
Any member interested in making additional
donations to this fund are always welcome to do so
since the money goes to such a valuable cause.
The synagogue has many funds to choose from to
make various donations to honor an event,
memorialize a loved one, or wish someone a speedy
recovery for an illness. All donations are kept within
the fund they are designated to and are never used for
operational expenses. The Kiddush fund is used to
offset the cost of our Shabbat Kiddush’s after
services, and the Kadish Minyan fund is used to
offset the cost of breakfast after our daily Minyan.
These are just a few of the many funds we have that
benefit various areas of our synagogue, and I
encourage everyone to be generous and support our
funds.
We are about to come to the close of another
successful school year, and I want to thank Karen
Katims and Dena Hoenig Valdez for the wonderful
job they do in running our schools. We are fortunate
to have such dedicated individuals heading up our
schools.
I want to wish everyone a wonderful beginning to
summer and look forward to seeing new faces each
week at our services.
Scholarships Available
Scholarships are available from the Alexander
congregation can receive financial assistance to
travel to Israel on Jewish affiliated trips as well as to
supplement Jewish summer camp sessions.
An application can be obtained through the
synagogue main office and must be completed and
turned in to the fund at least forty-five days prior to
the date that the organization application and deposit
are due. The only criterion for receiving aid is that
the applicant must submit an essay along with the
application outlining what traveling to Israel means
to them. It’s that simple. All young members are
eagerly encouraged to apply.
The Birth of Congregation Agudas Achim
As Congregation Agudas Achim completes its
twelfth decade as an active synagogue, it is fitting to
look back to its first year. Nobody who was alive at
that time survives today, and this history must
therefore use sources other than memories of the
participants. Luckily, the San Antonio daily
newspapers of the 1890s, the Express and the Light,
covered local Jewish affairs rather well, and much
history from these publications survives on
microfilm. In addition, the Texana/Genealogy
Department of the San Antonio Central Library has a
large and growing San Antonio Jewish archive which
was assembled over many years by Lenore Karp.
Unless the ancient Board minutes or letters, diaries or
memoirs from early congregation members turn up in
family heirlooms, microfilm newspaper archives,
along with some online sites, will continue to be the
primary sources.
The Congregation Begins
Congregation Agudas Achim – Hebrew for “A
gathering of the brethren” – was chartered on
November 29, 1889. The congregation was the
successor of a Jewish benevolent society, with an
Orthodox orientation, called Gemilath Hasodim,
which was organized in 1883. This history dates the
birth of the congregation from November 29, the day
the charter was filed, although there obviously were
organizational meetings prior to then.
The charter was actually dated November 1, 1889,
but not filed with the Texas Department of State until
more than four weeks later. The original corporate
name of the synagogue was Agudas Achem, rather
than Agudas Achim. The synagogue’s purposes
were: (1) the support of public worship according to
the Orthodox Jewish doctrine, (2) the support of
benevolent, charitable, educational, or missionary
undertakings in conformance with Orthodox Judaism,
and (3) the maintenance of a private cemetery. The
charter members were H.W. Koenigsberg, I.L.
Koenigsberg, Salmomon Dalkowitz, Samuel
Dalkowitz, N. Dalkowitz, J. Gurinsky, H. Gurinsky,
B. Gurinsky, H. Sellinger, N. Sellinger, B. Arstein,
A.B. Freeman, S. Bark, W. Cohn, P. Fink, M.
Schwartz, J. Druskin, N. Schnitzer, J. Klein, W. Jaffe,
M. Rabenowitz. A.W. Freyer, and T. Marmelstein.
The original Board of Directors was composed of
H.W. Koenigsberg, W. Jaffe, H. Becker, A.B.
Freeman, and T. Marmelstein. The requirements for
membership of the synagogue were that each
applicant be of the Orthodox Jewish faith and of good
moral character. The charter was to remain in effect
for fifty years.
A Jewish encyclopedia published fifteen years after
the fact says that the congregation was “founded” on
June 1, 1890, with an original membership of 43. As
stated in its charter, Agudas Achim was originally an
Orthodox congregation and the second congregation
in the city. Agudas Achim’s Reform sister
congregation, Temple Beth El, was founded in 1874.
The Orthodox congregation met in private homes and
rented halls for the first eight years of its existence.
The Break-Out Year
The year 1890 was a break-out year for the young
congregation, which organized rapidly. By the end of
the year, Agudas Achim had hired its first rabbi, held
its first High Holy Day services, purchased its
cemetery, and conducted its first burial. This
occurred in a small but growing frontier city which
had a population of 37,673 in 1890.
The congregation’s first permanent spiritual leader
was Rabbi Moses Edelhertz, who arrived in San
Antonio to take charge of the congregation a week
before High Holy Days. He came from Wichita,
Kansas. He was born in Russia and was about 37
years old. Rabbi Edelhertz had also been the rabbi of
the experimental Jewish agricultural Beersheba
Colony in Hodgeman County, Kansas, in the early
and mid-1880s, before he went to Wichita.
Congregation Agudas Achim held High Holy Day
services, and some other services, at the Knights of
Pythias Hall at Houston and Soledad Streets. On
Sunday afternoon, August 25, the congregation held a
service presided over by a rabbi named Schuster
Kofsky. Since Rabbi Edelhertz arrived in San
Antonio a week later, and since the congregation was
chartered only nine months earlier, Rabbi Kofsky
cannot be considered a permanent rabbi.
The congregation got into a bit of unintended trouble
with the law the following week. On Sunday,
September 7, at 1:20 a.m., the congregation was
meeting at 409 West Commerce Street, and was
Page 8 Kolenu/May 2010

The Birth of Congregation Agudas Achim
conducting what was obviously a Selichot service,
when the San Antonio Police came in and stopped the
service, on orders from Captain Andreas Coy, who
was Assistant City Marshall. According to the Light,
“They were simply singing and praying in their own
fashion, but the police claimed they had the right to
stop them under the ordinance covering ‘good order,’
and say that singing and other disturbances are
prohibited in the city after 12 o’clock.”
Rabbi Edelhertz arrived in San Antonio the day after
the police raid. High Holy Day services, which
began the following week, seem to have gone on
smoothly and without police interference. Rash
Hashanah began at sunset on September 14, and Yom
Kippur at sunset on September 23. The Agudas
Achim’s services at the Knights of Pythias Hall were
conducted by the new rabbi. Apparently for the first
time in San Antonio, the Orthodox custom of Rash
Hashanah as a two-day holiday was observed.
The Cemetery is Established
Even as it organized itself, hired its rabbi, and had
High Holy Day services, the young congregation also
established its cemetery. On August 18, 1890, the
San Antonio City Council heard the petition of
Congregation Agudas Achim to establish a cemetery.
The petition must have been presented to the council
while the congregation was negotiating to purchase
cemetery property, because the purchase would not
be finalized for more than a month. Finally, on
September 30, 1890, Congregation Agudas Achim
purchased what is now known as the Palmetto Street
Cemetery. The property was – and still is – located
on the block bounded by North Palmetto, Potomac,
St. James, and East Crockett Streets. Its dimensions
are 386 feet by approximately 232 feet, and it is
located across Palmetto Street from the old Temple
Beth El Cemetery. Agudas Achim purchased the
property from the San Antonio Cremation Company
for $800 cash.
Sadly, the cemetery was not empty for very long.
The first person buried there was an infant named
Herm Beck, who was born on August 19, 1890 – the
day after the congregation petitioned the City Council
to establish the cemetery – and died on October 22 of
the same year.
Although the Beck infant was the first person buried
in the cemetery, another person now buried there died
five years before he did. The gravestone in the
cemetery with the earliest date of death is that of
Meyer Karotkin, who lived from 1883 until 1885.
Meyer Karotkin was obviously re-interred at the
Agudas Achim cemetery after having been originally
buried elsewhere, because at the time of his death the
congregation did not exist, and the future cemetery
site belonged to the Cremation Company. The child
is buried in the Karotkin family plot. The earliest
original burial in the family plot was probably Fanny
Karotkin, who died in 1893.
Rabbi Edelhertz Remains for Several Years
Rabbi Eddelherz remained in San Antonio until about
1893, and he must be considered the first permanent
rabbi of the congregation. On May 3, 1891, he
officiated at the bris of the infant son of Mr. N.
Schwartz at the family home on West Houston Street.
According to the 1891 San Antonio city directory,
Rabbi Edelhertz resided at 15 North San Saba Street.
The 1892-1893 directory indicates that his home was
at 211 West Salinas Street. Under the heading
“Jewish Congregations” in church listings of the
same directory is the notation that “Rabbi Edelhertz
holds services every Saturday from 9 a.m. until 11
a.m. at 509 E. Commerce St.” Rabbi Edelhertz is
also listed in the 1894 directory at the West Salinas
address, but that directory also contains the name of
his successor at Agudas Achim, Rabbi Moses
Sadovsky, who resided at 219 North San Saba Street.
Since Rabbi Sadovsky moved to San Antonio in
1893, the listing of Rabbi Edelhertz was probably no
longer accurate by 1894.
The congregation hired a new rabbi in 1893 and
purchased property for its first permanent home,
which will be covered in the next installment of this
history.
A fully footnoted version of this history, with source
citations, may be obtained by emailing me at
mdrobbins1@aol.com. The congregational history
by me in the 120 th Anniversary Gala Book was
written without the benefit of seeing a copy of the
original charter, and unfortunately gave incorrect
dates for the birth of the congregation.
Kids Page - Shavuot
Cheese Blintzes
Cheese blintzes are served hot, with sour cream or applesauce. They are a special favorite on Shavuot when it is
customary to eat dairy products.
Ingredients:
Batter:
4 eggs
1 cup milk
1 cup flour
1 tablespoon sour cream
1/4 cup sugar
1 package vanilla sugar
pinch of salt
Filling:
16 ounces cottage cheese
2 egg yolks
2 tablespoons margarine or butter, melted
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla sugar
1/4 cup raisins (optional)
Directions:
Batter: Combine eggs and milk. Add sour cream and
blend well. Add flour gradually. Mix well until batter
is smooth. Heat on a low flame a small amount of oil
in an 8-inch frying pan until hot but not smoking.
Ladle a small amount of batter (approximately 1
ounce) into pan, tipping pan in all directions until
batter covers the entire bottom of the pan. Fry on one
side until set and golden (approximately 1 minute).
Slip pancake out of pan and repeat until all batter is
used. Add oil to pan as necessary.
Filling: In another bowl, mix all ingredients for
filling.
Assemble: Fill each pancake on golden side with 3
tablespoons of filling. Fold in sides to center and roll
blintz until completely closed. Replace rolled blintzes
in pan and fry for 2 minutes, turning once.
Fall Fall Fall 2010 2010 Registration Registration Registration is is Underway!
Underway!
All aboard for the best Jewish preschool education in San Antonio.
This month, Heintz Preschool will be accepting children from
eighteen months through four years old for Fall 2010. Our
comprehensive program is fully licensed and has two, three and five
day a week class options. We’re now offering extended care five
days a week beginning Fall 2010. The extended program is full of
fun and educational activities that are sure to stimulate both our
children’s little bodies and minds.
We’re dedicated to providing an early childhood program that will have a positive impact upon a family’s
Jewish identity development and ritual practice, as well as a superior secular education.
The philosophy of Heintz Preschool is to provide a warm, nurturing environment. Our low ratio of
children-to-staff enables the teachers to focus on each child’s individual needs and interests. Our quality
curriculum promotes a fun, positive and rewarding Jewish educational experience integrating Jewish
values and culture.
Whether motivated by Heintz Preschool’s Jewish content or our emphasis on language arts, music,
movement, crafts and fine motor skills, graduates of Heintz Preschool are ready to enter Kindergarten
with confidence! The small school fills quickly, so reserve your child’s spot today! For more information
or to arrange a tour of Heintz Preschool, please contact Dena Hoenig Valdez at (210) 479-0429.
Heintz Preschoolers are Mini Mensches
Heintz Preschool is committed to exposing our students to early childhood
Jewish values relevant to their lives. We’ve long practiced the mitzvot of
Tzedakah (charity) and Tikkun-Olam (repairing the world). This year we
implemented a “Mini Mensch” program. Mensch is a Yiddish word
describing a good, kind and dependable person. Each month, the children
were introduced to a new “Mensch Theme.” When a child understands and
bases his/her behavior on Jewish values, and not just human decency, the
child is building a Jewish vocabulary and a Jewish foundation which will
serve the child throughout his/her life.
Throughout the year we have integrated these values into the daily routine
through vocabulary, role-play, art, storytelling and other creative ways initiated by our talented teachers.
Some of the themes covered this year were Derech Eretz (courtesy and respect), Kibbud Horim u’Morim
(honoring parents and teachers), Hiddur P’nay-Zakayn (honoring the elderly and grandparents), Ma’achil
Re’ayvim (feed the hungry), Emet (truth) and Lo Tachmode (do not covet). In May, our Mini Mensch theme
will be Talmud Torah (study).
We are pleased with the success of the Mini Mensch program and are looking forward to next year’s group of
Mini Mensches!
Day of Remembrance
Day of Remembrance Must Be Shared
Last week I left some paperwork in one of my classes at school. When I went back for it the next day I found
it covered in swastikas and jokes about the Holocaust to the point where my original notes were not even
legible. I knew immediately that this was no coincidence. Someone at my school who must have known that I
was Jewish decided to attack me personally with hateful messages. At first I was enraged by the audacity of
people poking fun at the greatest tragedy in human history. Then I remembered a famous saying, “Darkness is
dispelled by shining a light on the problem, not by casting additional darkness on its path.”- JJ Dewey
I tell you this story because it is something almost everyone has experienced, and it is something we must defy
each and every day of our lives. Is it enough that once a year we light candles and mourn the six million of our
brothers and sisters who were murdered seventy years ago? I say that it is not enough. We must actively rise
up against the dark forces of ignorance and hate that have seized hold of the hearts and minds of entire nations
in the past. We must remain constantly vigilant as these forces try to gain new ground among new generations
via cell phones and the internet. But most of all, we must spread our message, one of understanding and love,
to everyone in every generation regardless of religious affiliation. A famous philosopher once said “The only
good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance.” The Holocaust is not simply a tragedy among us Jews.
Under Adolf Hitler’s insane tutelage, the Nazis murdered millions more of gypsies, the physically and
mentally disabled, and anyone else who didn’t fit into the Aryan “Master Race” equation.
So I say that we should not simply say Mourners Kaddish in our homes and synagogues. I insist we make the
Yom Hashoah services an important ceremony for all people in our community. Invite all friends and
neighbors to come and remember what is sacrificed when society allows fear, ignorance and hatred to take
control over our lives.
Crossing the Line: The Intifada Comes to Campus
Moderators:
Professor Jeffrey F. Addicott
Distinguished Professor of Law
Director of the Center for Terrorism Law at St. Mary’s University School of Law
Rabbi David Komerofsky
Executive Director, Texas Hillel, University of Texas
Produced by acclaimed filmmaker Raphael Shore and directed by Wayne Kopping, the film explores the
proliferation of anti-Israel and anti-Semitic incidents on North American college campuses. In particular, the
film explores the rapid growth of such incidents following the launch of Operation Cast Lead by Israel’s
military into Gaza in late December 2008 and January 2009. The documentary demonstrates the blurring of
anti-Israel and anti-Semitic lines, showing how the war evoked deep anti-Jewish sentiments amongst college
students and professors.
The film explores the context of these hostilities by demonstrating the financial ties between Middle Eastern
Studies departments and Arab states; the often biased and pro-Palestinian education received by students in
college classes; and the historical connection between the Muslim Student Association and the Muslim
Brotherhood.
Sponsored by the Israel Public Action Committee of Congregation Rodfei Sholom and the Community
Relations Council of the Jewish Federation, this event is free and open to the community. For more
information, please contact Bobbie Ghitis at 862-0704 or Judy Lackritz at 302-6962.
You are invited to attend a panel discussion sponsored by the Jewish Women’s Community
Initiative of the Jewish Federation
Wednesday, May 26, 2010, 7:00 p.m.
The Jewish Women’s Community Initiative (JWCI) is an independent project of the Jewish Philanthropy Division of the
Federation. It is rooted in Jewish values and is a vehicle to empower women to be philanthropists, decision-makers and
advocates on behalf of women and girls of all ages.
Any woman may give to the JWCI. There is no minimum gift required. In addition to your annual gift to the Federation
Campaign, we ask for a contribution to the JWCI, held as one of the Jewish Federation Philanthropic Endowment Funds. A
percentage of the endowment is given to a community project. The recipient organization must be a 501(c)(3) organization.
This year $900 was presented to Morgan’s Wonderland, the only park in the world for children and adults with special needs.
