ON MENTCHLICHKEIT
The Jewish tradition has
articulated certain terms that have
an enduring place in Jewish
consciousness. Consider the term
“mentch” or “mentchlichkeit,”
which means, literally, “person” or
“human being.” I receive many
requests to comment on this
ethical concept, and I submit a definition that has
shaped Jewish moral sensitivity through the centuries.
It would be especially helpful if this word were taught
to our children and grandchildren.
Mentch means “an ideal human being,” a
person who has cultivated a character of sensitivity,
care and compassion. Our society can produce the
best lawyers, the most talented doctors, the most
astute business executives, the most talented
professionals, but without Mentchlichkeit, there can be
no authentic , enduring and meaningful success in the
act of living.
The Jewish folk-tradition offers commentary on
the meaning and implication of being a ‘mentch’.
When a person failed to perform the basic acts
demanded by an elemental sense of decency, this
was a source of shock and consternation. What
happened to his/her mentchlichkeit - what happened
to his/her humanity?
How do we teach mentchlichkeit? How do we
acquire it? How do we transmit it? The answer lies
with the observance, practice and discipline of
Judaism, with the way of the Torah, but not Torah
restricted to an abstract intellectual exercise, but
Torah as a way of life. We Jews have a tradition that is
4,000 years old. From historic experience, we have
achieved profound insights and great wisdom
embodied in the values taught and preserved by our
heroes and heroines in our great literature. These
values are not disposable like yesterday’s
newspapers. The values enable a human being to live
a meaningful life.
These values have one goal: to try to make a
mentch out of each of us. Because if you are a
mentch, our tradition says, you can be relied upon
4
Lessons K
From The Rabbi
under all circumstances. You can be a mentch for all
seasons. If you are a student, you will resist the
pressure of others who want you to take drugs, to use
sex as a substitute for love. If you are a mentch, and
you have a profession, your concern for your client or
patient will supersede your concern for your own self
advantage. If you are a mentch , and you are in
business, your concern for integrity will not be
compromised by your desire for profits. If you are a
mentch, and there is a crisis, you will be the person who
can be counted upon to help others as well as yourself.
To be a mentch means to give and to draw
satisfaction and to find joy in giving. A noted student of
human behavior underlined this truth: “Not he who has
much is rich, but he who gives much. The hoarder, who
is anxiously worried about losing something is the poor
impoverished man. Regardless of how much he has,
whoever is capable of himself is rich.”
To be a mentch means to give of ourselves. It
means comforting the bereaved, visiting the sick,
transcribing Braille for the blind, settling the stranger in
our midst, working on behalf of Israel, lending a hand to
the synagogue, to the community, to the causes and
movements that need our help. We call these deeds of
G’milut Chassadim - loving kindness. They heal not
only the object of such goodness, but also those who
perform such generous deeds. Because those who
engage G’milut Chassadim transform not only the
situation, but also their own character.
A glorious God gave each of us a treasure - a
precious gift - a Neshama - a soul and we can find it by
linking it to the world out there that has to be saved or
redeemed. There is something specific and particular
that everyone of us can do, with our care, with our
intelligence and our unique spirit. To be mentch is a
challenge issued to each of us. Let us be strengthened
and encouraged as we meet that challenge and thereby
bring great blessing to the world and to ourselves.
Happy Hanukkah,
Rabbi Leonardo Bitran
Kol Shira
SINGING OUR SONG…
In a few short weeks
we will celebrate “Shabbat
Shirah,” the “Sabbath of
Song,” and we will read from
Parashat B’shallach in the
book of Exodus, remarkable
because it contains the
distinctive “Shirat Hayam,”
the “Song of the Sea.” “Shirat Hayam,” one of only
two extended poems found within the Torah (the
other being Moses’ farewell poem at the very end of
Deuteronomy), is the triumphant song of victory
recounting Moses’ and the Israelites’ dramatic
departure from Egypt, as they sing praises to God
for their safe passage through the parted Red Sea,
while Pharaoh’s pursuing armies are drowned in the
turbulent waters. When you view the text in the
Torah scroll, you see the unique physical spacing of
the words on the parchment page—the poetic
phrases are divided into overlapping, yet separated
“bricks” (as noted in the Talmud), framed on either
side by the regular columns of fully-justified
handwritten text. Some scholars have suggested
that this separation of text is representative of the
parting of the Red Sea itself.
In Ashkenazic tradition there is a special,
recurring melody associated with “Shirat Hayam”
that enhances our regular Torah Cantillation of the
text. Our custom is that within each of the verses in
which God’s name is mentioned the Torah reader
deviates from his regular chanting of the text and
uses instead this ancient melody, named in some
sources as “Festive Trope.” This is an extremely
challenging reading for the Torah reader, as he/she
must seamlessly transition (just before and just after
the chanting of the “God” verses) in and out of these
special phrases; thus, the reader must alternate
between the normal Torah trope (as one might read
any other text in the Torah) and then immediately
switch to the singing of the new melody, chanting the
“God” phrase in Festive Trope, and then returning to
the regular Torah Cantillation patterns.
Ethnomusicologists believe that these Festive
Trope melodies are some of the oldest identifiable
Jewish musical material, occurring in variant forms
within both established Ashkenazic and Sephardic
traditions of the communal chanting of “Shirat
Hayam.”
Why is the reading of this text treated so
uniquely within our liturgy? And why was it chosen
to be included every day in our preliminary morning
prayers (it is found at the very end of Psukei
D’zimrah, Verses of Song, just before the Barchu
each morning)? Think for a moment of the singular
biblical event through which we become a unified
people with a focused, communal destiny…of course
it is the Exodus from Egypt! It is following that
monumental, transformative experience that we
become prepared to receive God’s commandments
and begin to fulfill the covenantal relationship
established between God and Abraham, which
results in our ultimate return to the land of Israel.
We regularly recall the Exodus when we lift
our cup of wine or grape juice each Erev Shabbat or
Festival evening during Kiddush as we pronounce
“zeicher l’tsiyat mitzrayim”—“in remembrance of the
Exodus from Egypt.“ We similarly invoke the
Exodus with even more intensity and detail during
each day’s morning service, as our liturgy calls upon
us to reenact our voluntary acceptance of God’s role
in our lives as we chant the words of “Shirat Hayam,”
praising our Creator, and carrying that recurring
refrain as each new day begins. Perhaps the
symbolism of God’s name being chanted with a
distinctive, festive melody reminds us that God’s
presence in the world brings a unique dimension to
our existence, even as the rest of our story marches
on. It is through the repeated chanting of “Shirat
Hayam” that the beauty and intensity of our poetic
narrative as a people continues. Who would have
thought that singing our song would have such an
impact on the world?
CREATING SACRED
COMMUNITY
In his book, To Life,
Rabbi Harold Kushner recounts
an interesting anecdote about
Chaim Weitzman, the first
president of Israel. At a time
when Weitzman was lobbying
British politicians to win their
support for the Zionist effort to
gain a Jewish homeland, one member of the House
of Lords asked him: “Why do you Jews insist on
Palestine when there are so many undeveloped
countries you could settle in more conveniently?”
Weitzman answered: “That is like my asking you
why you drove twenty miles to visit your mother last
Sunday when there are so many old ladies living on
your street.”
By way of elucidation, Kushner comments:
“We love Israel, not because it is perfect, but
because it is ours. We love our parents, not
because they are better parents than anyone else
has, but because they are our parents.” By
extension, I would urge that what is true of our love
for Israel and our love for our parents is also true of
our love for our synagogue. We love Congregation
Agudas Achim, not because it is perfect, or more
beautiful, or better than any other synagogue, but
because it is ours. If that is right, then it would seem
6
Message
From The Executive Director
to follow that our love for the shul grows in direct
proportion to the extent to which we take
ownership of it.
To the extent that we participate in the
host of religious, cultural, educational, and
recreational programs that the synagogue makes
available we take ownership of the shul, and our
love for it increases proportionately. Of course,
underlying, running through and driving all of our
programming is the synagogue’s purpose, which
I take to be “creating sacred community.” Our
purpose, to put it another way, is to create and
foster a community dedicated to a Torah way of
life, to moral interaction and genuine caring for
each other. True ownership resides in our
commitment to that purpose.
January is the month in which we
celebrate the secular New Year, and customarily,
we anticipate our new beginnings by making our
individual New Year’s resolutions. As we usher in
this New Year I urge us to put synagogue
ownership at the top of our individual lists.
Together we can create the sacred community
that will ensure a healthy, balanced and
sustainable synagogue.
Have a happy New Year!
President’s
Remarks
ALL GOOD THINGS COME TO
AN END
This will be my last Kolenu
article as President of Congregation
Agudas Achim. As I reflect back
over the past three years as
President, the first thought that
comes to mind is what a wonderful,
rewarding time I had. First off, we
have the greatest Conservative
congregation anywhere. Our
families call our synagogue home, and that was my
number one goal. We have an outstanding Rabbi and
Hazzan and a staff that goes out of their way to be helpful.
Our preschool and religious school are the best in the city.
We have a vibrant Sisterhood and Men's Club. We have a
synagogue we all can be very proud to call ours. We have
the full package.
I have been fortunate over the past three years to
have had the opportunity to work with a fine group of
officers and an active Board of Trustees. Their passion
and caring for our Agudas family has gotten us out of debt,
with a solid footing for the future. As other Jewish
organizations here in San Antonio are going through their
trials and tribulations, I am proud to say that Agudas
Achim is the rock-solid pillar of the community. I thank
everyone for the countless hours you spent with me
making our synagogue the best it can be. I'm excited
about our future. I'm leaving us in good hands with Randy
Pulman following me as President.
We now have a new challenge to face. Our
synagogue has faced a lot of situations over the years that
would have, or could have ended our existence. Our
congregants, our families, and our love for Conservative
Judaism have enabled us to persevere. Our next
challenge is to insure our future. The best way for that to
happen is to build our endowments and raise more
revenue. This is not something that has to happen
tomorrow. If Agudas Achim has been good to you over
your lifetime, then please consider leaving a bequest to
the synagogue. If you like what you are receiving from
your synagogue now, consider paying enhanced dues.
Enhanced dues are important to any synagogue’s survival.
Not everyone in our synagogue family is able to pay their
full share due to circumstances beyond their control. Your
enhanced dues help offset that deficiency in revenue lost
and insure us of a balanced budget year to year.
If you are thinking that our expenses are too high
and we waste money, I would like to assure you that we
do not. We are constantly pursuing ways to cut costs
without cutting service. I have worked hard over the last
three years to make sure we are operating as efficiently as
possible and as close to budget as possible.
When our beautiful synagogue was built, we
inherited some problems. Using my expertise, I have
highlighted those problems, and, with our tight budget,
was able to address and correct a good number of those
issues. We are still working on some, especially the air
conditioning that has never worked right from day one.
We are now on the right path to getting that corrected.
We will have other building issues in the future because
of deferred maintenance that we can't put off much
longer. Our building, which is fully paid for, is looking for
some tender loving care. A good wash, paint, and seal
would do wonders and help keep up the value of our
building. Sprucing up our grounds and adding trees and
ground cover will make us all proud of the way our shul
looks. We have a wonderful asset in our building. We all
should be very proud of it, especially since we are able
to call it ours.
I've enjoyed meeting hundreds of new
congregants over the past three years. Watching
everyone feeling at home when they are in the building
and at services and programs is wonderful. Our
children's accomplishments during their time at shul
might be the most rewarding part of being President.
Their love of being Jewish and their special friendships
they've made will be something that will remain in their
hearts the rest of their lives. Our synagogue offers a lot,
and our congregants take full advantage of what it has to
offer.
We've come a long way over the past three years
and I want to thank each and every one of you for
making my term as President something I will cherish the
rest of my life. I appreciate the vote of confidence you
gave me during my Presidency and your full support for
what I tried to accomplish.
I want to close by thanking my wonderful wife,
Eileen, and my son, Stevie, for inspiring me to be a good
President and a good Jew. I also want to thank my
mother for raising her four boys the right way even with
all the unfairness she had to endure in her life. I love
you all very much.
Thanks again for making three years fly by. I
look forward to seeing you all at shul.
Sailing Through 2012 With Soupy & Clara!
2012 began a year
of celebrations for Harold
“Soupy” and Clara Reich
with their children and
their spouses: Allen &
Jennifer, Norine &
Howard, and Helene &
Harry, and grandchildren:
Ryan, Gabriel, Molly,
Joseph and Abby.
They celebrated Soupy’s 90 th birthday in San
Diego, California. The family spent 4 fun days enjoying
the beautiful coast, sailing, visiting the Midway aircraft
carrier, the San Diego Zoo, and Coronado Island. Of
course lots of wonderful meals were shared as well,
toasting Soupy at each one!
In August, Clara and Soupy celebrated 65 years
of marriage with their children and grandchildren at
Paesanos and dessert at their home with more family. It
all started 65 years ago when Harold met Clara at the
J.C.C.!
In December, once again the family sailed
together and celebrated life! Over 40 family members
from Texas, Mexico, California, New York, Georgia and
Missouri joined together to also celebrate the 50th
wedding anniversary of Clara’s brother and sister in law,
recently published by Hillel. Mazel tov, Stephanie!
Student Profile: Stephanie Stern '15
Board Position: Social Justice (Tzedek) Chair
How did you get involved in Hillel?
I've been in Jewish youth groups throughout my life. Last
year, I formed close connections with upper classmen in
Hillel and they encouraged me to apply for the Board.
What does Hillel mean to you?
It is a place that is very inclusive and for me. It's my niche
within Goucher, kind of like an extension of family: a
place where people can gather and share experiences.
How does social justice fit in with Hillel?
I enjoy having conversations with people about different
issues and problems within the Baltimore community or
even the world. By bringing more awareness and information,
we can get people to think about things like hunger
or homelessness. It's important for people to be
aware as members of the community. And it's good to
support other people and help them achieve the best
quality of life.
What has being on the Board done for you?
Through this position I've become more active in participating
with social justice issues outside of Goucher. Hillel
and my position on the board give me the opportunity to
be more active in pursuing things I'm passionate about.
My sociology major has helped in understanding why
inequality exists and how society can change. I've become
more active and more thoughtful about issues and
beliefs of different people and have also learned the importance
of supporting something you're passionate
about.
What are some of your hobbies?
I enjoy going to see plays and theatre, being involved in
community service, and hanging with my friends. I love to
eat and make food, especially Mediterranean, Italian, and
Jewish cuisines.

Todah Rabbah
Congregation Agudas Achim would like to offer
a tremendous yasher koach and thank you to Marinel
Robbins and Mike Winakur. Both Marinel and Mike
have served our congregation and held significant
volunteer positions at the synagogue. We have
benefitted from their dedication and caring service.
Marinel has been our Ross Family Kitchen
mashgihah for more than five years. She worked
tirelessly, whether overseeing kitchen staff and
caterers, kashering the kitchen for Pesach, or even
creating beautiful centerpieces. With her guidance and
wisdom, our annual Gala receptions were magnificent
events where we proudly welcomed the community.
As Gabbai, Mike was a commanding presence.
He read the Torah, led minyan, and ran services
among other functions. His harmonizing with Hazzan
and his impeccable correcting of the Torah readers
made him so dependable, efficient and competent.
Thank you Marinel and Mike for everything you
have done to make Congregation Agudas Achim the
best synagogue we can be.
Congregation Agudas Achim is proud to announce the
beginning of a new after-school program open to the
community called Young Explorers. Young Explorers,
designed for children ages 2 to 5, provides an exciting
IPRS 4 th & 5 th Grade Students Twin with Students in Israel
IPRS 4 th & 5 th Graders have started a “Twinning
Project” with Israeli Students. This project is part of
PARTNERSHIP2GETHER a program of the
Jewish Agency and the Jewish Federations of
North America. Our students will take part in at
least four opportunities to twin with their partner
class in Israel. By twinning, the two classes will
either do parallel activities or will participate at the
exact same time by Skype. Planned activities
include:
Pen Pals – Each student from IPRS will have a
personal relationship with one-two students in
Akko. With the help of their English teachers
and our Hebrew teachers, the students will
exchange letters.
Tu B’Shevat Seder- we will create an event to
happen at the same time with both schools on a
Sunday morning in San Antonio and an
evening in Israel. Both groups will celebrate
Tu B’Shevat at the same time via Skype.
“A day in the life of” - Each school will create a
IPRS 4 th & 5 th Graders learn a new song from Eliad Eliyahu,
short clip about its everyday life, to include
unique activities in the school and the routine
life of 4th & 5th graders.
Both classes will sing the song, "Hakol Le
Tova", and create a clip of all the school singing
from both sides of the ocean singing “2Gether”
Additionally, to enhance our partnership, I will be
visiting our partner class along with IPRS teachers,
Silvana Bacman, & Rosa Jonasz. On our
visit, we plan to present to the Israeli students a
“Texas” size gift (shown below) that was created
by the 4 th and 5 th grade students. We’ll have an
opportunity to teach a few classes to the Israeli
students, observe classes, and to continue planning
with the partner teachers. Unfortunately, our
November 28, 2012 trip was cancelled; however,
we hope to be able to take this exciting adventure
as soon as February 2013.
Tu B’Shevat
Tu B’Shevat
On Tu B'Shevat we celebrate a New Year for the
Trees, rejoicing in the fruit of the tree and the fruit of the
vine, celebrating the splendid, abundant gifts of the
natural world which give our senses delight and our
bodies life.
Tu B'Shevat marks the beginning of spring in
Israel. Sustaining rains are at the peak of their power
and the world responds, brimming with buds of fragrant
life. To mark this moment, school children often plant
trees, perpetuating this natural cycle of the Earth’s
rebirth.
For Jews outside of Israel, Tu B'Shevat is a
celebration of the renewal of vision and awareness, a
celebration of connections and connectedness--to our
own inner-selves, to the social world of human beings,
and to the natural world and its Source.
Happy Tu B’Shevat
The Tu B'Shevat Seder
In the 17th century, the Kabbalists, the Jewish
mystics of Safed, developed a special seder (order
service). Their efforts were influenced by the verse
Deuteronomy 20:19: "For man is like the tree of the
field".
Modeled on the Passover seder, the Tu B'Shevat
seder includes drinking four cups of wine with varying
percentages of red and white wine, representing the
shifting of yearly seasons. The seder also included
readings on trees and fruit from a range of Jewish
literature.
The new form of celebration spread from Safed to
Sephardi communities in Turkey, Italy and Greece.
Eventually, Jews throughout the world developed their
own versions of the Tu B’Shevat seder where we
gather together to eat, sing and rejoice in the miracle of
the tree.
Sisterhood
A Moment With Judy
Hi everyone. It's been a while since
I've had the opportunity to keep you
up-to-date on Sisterhood doings, so
here goes. We had a highly
successful month of November,
beginning with the winding down of
our Estate Sale. Thanks, especially,
to Bernice Mazer and Sandy Shaenfield, co-chairs, and
thanks, also, to all our workers and buyers who helped
us help the synagogue and school. Following that, we
had our New Members brunch with fun games and a
delicious meal, planned by Caryn Landes and Sandy
Weingart. That same week, the mahjong and gin rummy
players had a wonderful morning and afternoon noshing
on snacks and lunch. Linda Aboloff takes care of this
event every year. On Friday evening we honored our
veterans and military with a service and dinner. This is a
very rewarding and satisfying program for us and for
them. We hope to repeat this again next year. Thanks,
Deanie Vogel and Jean Schlesinger for all your hard
work. Finally, our November book review with Sandy
Wartell, giving a very interesting discussion. Suzan
Mendlovitz chairs our book reviews. Look for the next
one coming up on January 8. WHEW! I'm tired just
thinking about all our November events.
On December 2nd we had our Gift Shop Open
House and Hanukah party for seniors at Barnes & Noble.
Seniors from Madison House and Adante enjoyed
listening to the EKA children singing Hanukkah
songs. This was planned by Sandy Weingart, our
Program Chair. Sisterhood also gave the seniors
Hanukkah gift bags from our Gift Shop.
By the time you read this, our New Year's Eve
party will be over. I hope everyone had a wonderful time
with entertainment, music, and a delicious breakfast! And
you were surrounded by 100 of your closest friends!!!
Sisterhood has several other events coming up in
the spring. We have some programs with guest
speakers, a return to the popular "Chocolate and
Chuckles", our Anniversary Tea, and other
programs. Information will be coming soon.
I hope everyone had a very happy Hanukkah,
and I wish all of you a successful and healthy 2013.
See you in shul,
Judy Halfant, Sisterhood President
Book Review with
Susan Whipple!
The author writes: "There is
no time in history that is
perfect. From Tudor unrest
through the Holocaust to the
Twin Towers, here are
women living with fear, terror,
strength, warmth and
love." Indeed a good read for
a winter's night! Please join
us Tuesday, January 8th at
10:00 a.m. in the Gurinsky
Family Social Hall. This
event is free and open to
everyone. You may contact chairperson Suzan Mendlovitz
at 344-1108 for more information
Sisterhood Shabbat-January 25th and 26th
Please join us on Friday, January 25th and
Shabbat, January 26th as we observe our Annual
Sisterhood Shabbat with Sisterhood ladies’ participation.
Friday Night with Friends service will begin at 6:15p.m.
with a delicious Shabbat dinner to follow. The cost for
dinner is $18 for adults, $11 for children 5-11 years, and
free for 4 years and younger. Please contact Linda Brown
for Shabbat dinner reservations at 479.0307 or
l.brown@agudas-achim.org. Help us give a Texas
welcome to our National Women’s League President, Ruth
Wertlieb, who will speak to us at Saturday morning
services. A wonderful Kiddush lunch will follow the service.
Sisterhood Gives Thanks
Thank you to all our Sisterhood members, our
Congregation, and our many friends in the community who
contributed merchandise to our Sisterhood’s Estate/Thrift
Sale. Your support helped toward making this a very
successful fundraiser.
Our congregation, the Heintz Pre-School, and the
Inda Posner Religious School will benefit from the
proceeds of this sale. We were also able to assist many
different charities in San Antonio including Fisher House,
Dress for Success, Goodwill, and Boysville.
Thanks to all our workers for volunteering their
endless time and effort in picking up, marking, sorting and
selling our merchandise. Your participation and financial
support made this annual event possible.
