CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE The Avignon Popes knew a thing or two about wine and were not slow to recognise the potential that existed on this extraordinary plateau in Provence. What makes the difference is the especially complex and varied terroir, and the best wines are nearly always the result of blending not just grape varieties but also fruit from various soil types and exposures. The wines get better and better as they age. Older vintages held back by The Wine Society until mature are a rare treat. J-RH24001 The Society’s Exhibition Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 2007 £19 bottle £228 dozen As befits the great 2007 vintage, there is an added dimension here in the form of greater power, depth and concentration of flavour. 2007s are not just about power though, they are elegant too with a lovely quality of ripe fruit. Now to 2020. 14.5% J-RH14971 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine La Roquète, 2004 £22 bottle £264 dozen Heady, spicy, fabulously rich-tasting red from the Brunier family of Vieux-Télégraphe. Now to 2015. 14.5% J-RH11031 † Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Cuvée Grenache, Bosquet des Papes, Boiron, 2001 £30 bottle £360 dozen Such was the quality of the harvest in 2001, the Boirons kept back some of their best grenache for this limited cuvée. Dense and luxurious with hints of wild herbs against a smoky black-fruit background, it is an absolute joy. Now to 2016. 14% J-RH12731 † Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Cuvée Etienne Gonnet, Domaine £35 bottle £420 dozen Font de Michelle, 2003 The top cuvée from Font de Michelle includes a parcel of 100-year-old grenache which in great vintages is used to make wines of outstanding depth and finesse. The 2003 is wonderful now. Now to 2020. 14.5% J-RH20231 † Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine du Pegau, 2006 £38 bottle £456 dozen Laurence Féraud makes a very traditional style of Châteauneuf which spends plenty of time in old foudres. The estate is made up of several plots of land which together make a wine of great depth and complexity. Decant well in advance. Now to 2022. 14% J-RH18541 † Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Cros de la Mûre, 2005 £42 bottle £504 dozen Eric Michel, whose outstanding Gigondas we follow, has been able to buy a tiny plot of vines in one of the best districts of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This has the same purity of expression as his admirable Côtes-du-Rhône but with several extra layers of finesse and complexity. Now to 2018. 15% J-RH8141 † Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Clos des Papes, Avril, 2000 £50 bottle £600 dozen Clos des Papes in a good vintage always needs ten years to come round. The 2000 is delicious now.
