12 Museums and Exhibitions Bowdoin College Museum of Art Thurs. 10:00 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. Fri. and Sat. 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Sun. 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Established in 1811, with collections spanning the ancient world to the twenty-first century, and housed in a building designed by Charles Follen McKim of McKim, Mead, and White, the Bowdoin College Museum of Art is a vital resource for the campus and community. The recent renovation, designed by architects Machado and Silvetti Associates of Boston, creatively combines a preservationist’s techniques with new architecture that respectfully enhances the old. It integrates the museum’s traditional features with a dramatic new entry pavilion, an inviting glass curtain wall, and a complete renovation of the entire interior of the building. Visitors experience a vibrant exhibition program featuring both rotating selections from the collections and dynamic changing exhibitions of objects from museums and collections around the world. Sit Down! Chairs from Six Centuries Celebrates the museum’s distinguished collection of American and European furniture, focusing on chairs dating from the fifteenth to the twenty-first centuries. Ranging in date from a medieval armchair produced around 1500 to the Nurse Hat Chair designed by Richard Prince in 2008, this exhibition examines the evolution of style, the nature of technological innovation, and the social meaning of seating furniture. The Art and the Deal Organized in conjunction with an economics seminar, this installation considers historical issues in the commercial art market ranging from the privileging of certain media and techniques to questions of authentication and intellectual property. Should artists be granted complete freedom to create, and how does public funding influence the answer? Litigation where works of art are the subject of disputes offers insights into the value of an artist’s total oeuvre, how prices are affected when an artist dies, the economic impact of authentication, and even the existential question of what is art. Among those artists featured in the exhibition are Albrecht Dürer, Roy Lichtenstein, and Richard Prince. Masterpieces of European Painting from the Wadsworth Atheneum Ten masterpieces of Italian, Dutch, and Spanish painting are on long-term loan from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, one of the nation’s premier museums, located in Hartford, Connecticut. Among the works are paintings by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, Giuseppe Ribera, and Aelbert Cuyp. Ranging in date from the late sixteenth-century to the mid-eighteenth-century, these works are integrated with selections from the permanent collection to offer a fresh perspective on centuries of radical painterly innovation. Contemporary Masters This installation features postwar works by such internationally renowned artists as Gerhard Richter, Michael Mazur, and Alex Katz. Palace Reliefs from Kalhu (Nimrud) The Assyrian bas-reliefs were carved at the behest of the Assyrian king Ashurnasirpal II in the ninth century BCE. The large stone panels once decorated the walls of the royal palace in the king’s new capital at ancient Kalhu and offer a visual narrative of Ashurnasirpal’s deeds supported by figures both mortal and divine. Simply Divine: Gods and Demigods in the Ancient Mediterranean The exhibition explores the nature of divinity in the Ancient Mediterranean, the relationships between gods and the realms they control. The installation organizes around select realms (Eros and Love, Fertility and Nature) and explores the myths and iconography that connect these spheres of divinity. The Renaissance and Revival of Classical Antiquity Explores the Renaissance and its relationship to ancient Greek and Roman culture. Artists and craftsmen of the Renaissance drew inspiration directly from works of antiquity, often working alongside these objects in their studios. The exhibition recreates a period in artistic history, pairing the finest examples of Bowdoin’s Renaissance holdings alongside classical artifacts. 13
