plain view. The Grail Stone, discussed throughout
this book was located in the middle of a Neolithic mound
known as Newgrange, the home of the triple spiral.
Clearly this basin stone was part of the original ritual although
tour guides took umbrage at any such suggestion. 11
It dawned on me that the basin stones of the temples,
the concave stones found inside the mounds in precise
settings, are early forms of the Holy Grail and act as a
transitional stage between the bear skull and the
baptismal fonts and chalices in Christian worship. I went
into a scholarly reverie which changed my life. The sheer
beauty of the temple and the spirit of place was astounding.
I wandered around Ireland for weeks seeing mound after
mound. I missed my plane and was forced to adjust the
tickets several times. My social visit to Dublin turned into
a full time study. I leased a Georgian house on the Boyne
River one mile from Newgrange, directly across from
Dowth and close to a famous bend in the Boyne called
Ros na Rig which has spawned the following rhyme, said
to be the last words of the great Medieval king Bryan
Boru:
“Bury me at Ros na Rig with my face toward the
sun.”
As it turns out Ros na Rig is aligned with the entrance of
Newgrange. For me it was like living in the mounds themselves.
I proceeded to test every known hypothesis. It didn’t
take long to agree with other modern authors that the socalled
“Passage Tombs” were primarily celestial, lunar
and solar observatories, designed to track cycles,
probably for animal husbandry or even human cycles.
Like any tabernacle or temple, church or chapel, they
were used as places of assembly, baptism, oaths and
