Ritual Astronomy
Gothic cathedrals and the deepest mysteries of
Christianity as practiced in the Renaissance. (Plate vii)
Newgrange, reconstructed in the 1960s, is faced with
many carved stones displaying zigzags, ovals and spirals.
It is designed with a curved outer wall covered with
glistening white quartz rocks hauled from many miles
away. The ambience of the place is so breathtaking that
the local farmers still believe it is inhabited by fairies. 34
At Newgrange the stone basin is displayed in a
perfect location to reflect light throughout the rather
large chamber. When the large basin was filled with
water, blood — or a red ochre liquid simulating blood —
the markings on the ceiling stone would be reflected
clearly. In this case the overhead stone “heaven” would
reflect into the Grail stone “Earth.” This is a perfect, and
early, example of what we have come to know as the
“Hermetic Paradigm.” — heaven above is reflected in
things on Earth. 35
Small clay cups and scallop shells, found buried in the
soil along the apron of the mound, represent life on the
34 The basin stone has been stacked upon another, even larger, concave
stone in the east recess of the chamber. I am convinced that the smaller
stone was originally located in the center of the chamber in the direct path
of the lightbeam on Winter Solstice. George Coffey—the first objective researcher
to come into contact with the stone—shows it in the center in
photographs he took in 1912. may have been placed there as recently as
1966. If two crystals are placed in the two indentations— and the basin is
placed in the center of the chamber—the beam will split into a cross shape,
very much like a laser generated through a beam splitter. Mrs. Hickey's
daughter and relatives—Hickey was one of the most respected early curators
of the mound—swear they saw the Grail Stone at the center of the mound in
1952.
York: McGraw-Hill, 1979. If there is a Neolithic continuity into Christianity
then this ritual may be one source for the host in modern Christian
communion. If an oblivious ecstasy were experienced at this point, it would
suggest the use of a mushroom or refined ergot, made less toxic by
exposure to an intense and coherent lightbeam.
