Introduction
Finally, just prior to World War II, John D. Rockefeller,
Senior, a well known eccentric and thirty-third degree
Freemason, made claims for the Antioch Chalice, a
beautiful silver and gold filigreed goblet now in the
Cloisters in New York, but this cup is also suspect.
If any of these contenders were proven to be the real
chalice used by Christ it would be nothing more than a
curiosity piece. It would certainly not be the Grail mentioned
in Parzival by Wolfram von Eschenbach, who defined
it as a red stone. Nor could it be the Graal mentioned
in the works of Chretien de Troyes, who defined it
as a book, possibly a book titled The Holy Grail. No, like
all voodoo objects, a chalice, no matter how authentic,
would only be vested with magical powers for those who
believe in such things. Still, most people persist in the belief
that the Grail is the chalice of the Last Supper. So the
elusive object remains hidden from view. But we must
define it before we can find it. Calling it a mere chalice is
missing the point. It may prove to be more than a chalice,
it may turn out to be a ceremony of unequalled spiritual
