Our region lies on Latitude 41, nestled between sea and mountains at the top of New Zealand’s South Island; a land of dramatic beauty and great diversity. It boasts a temperate climate, a reputation as the sunniest place in New Zealand and offers a natural environment that encourages a healthy outdoor lifestyle. The area comprises several distinctive and unique districts; from a busy small city to remote and rugged landscapes, with many villages and townships in between. SURROUNDINGS The Nelson region of New Zealand is one of the most fl ourishing, beautiful and affl uent regions of New Zealand. It is in the midst of this vibrant region, in the Tasman District, that Appleby Estates is tucked; in the coastal catchment between Richmond and Mapua. The area shows indication of early Maori settlement around Mapua in the period 900-1450AD. Appleby was fi rst settled by Europeans in the early 1840s. In the early times of European settlement Appleby was a strong dairy and apple farming region. Over the last twenty or so years farmers have diversifi ed. The coastal highway from Nelson to Motueka now runs past vineyards, olive plantations, hops, kiwifruit and berry farms, apple orchards and market gardens. Many descendants of the original settlers still live here. The region is home to three national parks, each a unique world-renowned environment; hosts a wide variety of sporting organisations; and has a well-established base of community and social services serving its residents. The Nelson region is home to more than 350 fulltime artists and craftspeople, and many more who pursue their artistic dream part time. Just visit the Nelson Farmers and Saturday markets or the Motueka Sunday market and be amazed at the wide variety of food stalls, artists and craftspeople displaying their wares. Be also amazed at the huge variety of cafés and restaurants in the region, offering cuisine from all around the world. Appleby School is about two minutes’ drive from Appleby Estates. The fi ve-teacher primary school prides itself on giving children a quality education in a caring, supportive environment. Each class has a maximum of twenty-six students and is well-resourced with internet and email networks. The school offers excellent facilities including a swimming pool, a spacious shaded playground, an amphitheatre and an adventure playground. Nearby Rabbit Island, viewed from every lot in the Estates, has a large choice of picnic areas and a beautiful eleven-kilometre-long sandy beach for swimming and walking. Eight kilometres west of Appleby Estates is Mapua with its wharf, art galleries, an aquarium and gift shop, cafés, and smoked fi sh. Mapua has its own school, churches, library, a medical centre, shopping mall and fi re station. It is also a base for eco-tours which operate on the Waimea Estuary. The Waimea Estuary, is ranked internationally as of importance for migratory birds. One of the largest estuaries in New Zealand, it is also classifi ed as a signifi cantly important wetland. It is also used for a variety of recreational pursuits including birdwatching, boating, fi shing, swimming, wakeboarding, and waterskiing. Greenacres an 18-hole golf course, once voted “the most scenic” by Television New Zealand’s Golf Show, is located on nearby Best’s Island. What more could you ask for? 3
