2 F EBRUARY 2013 Dress for Manitoba conditions Enjoy your day at the hill by following these suggestions A day at the ski hill can be fun, but without the proper gear, you’ll end up with frostbite or sweating. Here’s what to wear while skiing, boarding or tub - ing. Wear the following to make up the first layer: Thin, wicking, thermal shirt. It should be fitted to your chest, and it shouldn’t slide around while you walk. This will be your base garment, and it should fit you well. Tight, thermal pants. They should also be thin, and they should be pressed up against your legs. These will be the base for your legs. Make sure you have everything you need for the second layer. Additional layers should avoid being cotton as cotton will not wick moisture as synthetic materials or wool are able to do. It doesn’t need to be as tight, but it should still fit well. You should wear one with a long neck, as this will keep you warmer. Sweatpants. They should be rela - tively tight, or else it will be too bulky to put anything else on. Dress into the third layer. Slide on a ski jacket. This does need to fit you, but not perfectly. As long as it’s not too small, anything will do. Make sure that it is a ski jacket - not a hoodie, not a sweatshirt, but a ski jacket. Ski jackets are made special to keep you warm while skiing. If your jacket has a powder skirt, clip that on too. Put on ski pants. Make sure that they are thick, and not regular gloves. Ski gloves are thicker and have a rubber lining on the outside for easy grip. These aren’t optional, because if you don’t wear them, you’ll have frostbite af - ter about an hour. Then picture the wed - ding party riding a chairlift down to the main chalet for an evening with family and friends. That’s only one of several setting options avail - able at Asessippi Ski Area & Resort which recently added wedding destination to its im - pressive list of amenities and services. “We have just done a few wedding shows last year,” wrote Blue Moffatt, the re - sort’s Food and Beverage Manager and Summer Opera - tions Manager, in an inter - view conducted via email. “This is something new to promote the wedding market.” Having already partici - pated in bridal shows in Yorkton and Brandon, Mof - fatt plans to head to a show in Regina this year and an - other one in Winnipeg in January 2013. As for getting the word out, she cited a cross-promotion with a local photographer, whose images from a winter wedding are featured on the resort’s web - site, and how this has helped “create a marketing package.” “It’s all here,” she de - tailed. “We can pull together your ceremony, your dinner and your dance all in one lo - cation. Having an experi - enced wedding planner is also invaluable. There are many components to planning your wedding that you don’t think of. All inclusive packages with a ccommoda - tions, dinner, etc. can be cre - ated.” Some of the choices featured on the website are Tie the Knot at the Top; Sugar Shack I and II, with banquet rooms mod - elled after French Canadian Sugar Shacks; The River’s Edge, where couples can ex - change their vows alongside the Shell River and transpor - tation can be provided by horse and carriage. A garden setting is also an option for summer nuptials. The resort provides full catering of weddings on-site thanks to a partnership with the Russell Inn Food and Bev - erage staff. Moffatt added that for summer weddings there are a lot of areas for camping as well as Bed & Breakfasts for overnight guests. “We will build your wedding package including accommodation at Russell Inn for you, if you wish. Honeymoon packages are also available. A one-stop shop as such.” What kind of timeline does planning a wed - ding involve and what sort of costs or price range are cou - ples looking at? “I will work with any budget. It can be simple or very elegant,” wrote the veteran wed - ding planner. “I have booked and catered over 300 wed - dings in my career and there are many different styles of weddings, let me tell you. Some can take one meeting, with others I meet weekly with the brides. It depends on the degree of the event. I can do all components of the event as a planner. Or we can simply do the ceremony, which would be probably one meeting. Booking a location for your wedding can be for a ceremony venue as little as $300 or up to a full service planned event for $75 per per - son. Which is the most popular way for couples to tie the knot? “They love the idea of get - ting married at the top of the Quad and riding the lift down,” she noted. As for other notable trends when it comes to wed - dings these days, she ex - plained, “Well, over the past years, it has become about the décor. Lots of money has been put toward the finishing touches. There are several decorators in the area that we work with.” In addition to working with talented local decora - tors, “The great thing about this location is we have the décor - the great outdoors.
