4 F EBRUARY 2013 Don Amero knows he is on the right road With four albums now, the Winnipeg singer/songwriter will return to Asessippi Don Amero remembers it well. It was the day that changed his life. On Sept. 15, 2007, he walked off his job as a hard - wood flooring installer and set out to pursue music full - time. And what a good day that turned out to be! In the past four years, Amero has released three albums that generated two national awards and 12 nominations. He has toured the country from coast-to-coast, been in - vited to play festivals, been asked to perform with sym - phony accompaniment, and appeared on national televi - sion concerts. While a lot has happened for Amero in a seemingly short time, in actu - ality, it was a long road for him to get to where he is to - day. From the notoriously tough North End of Winni - peg, Amero faced his share of adversity growing up. With poverty, gangs, drugs and violence all around, fortu - nately, his life was tempered by love, support, and faith in a Greater Power. Shaped and molded by his own experi - ences, Amero’s music now carries both the depth of hardship and luminosity of hope. For all who take the time to listen, his message is one of encouragement, posi - tivity and beauty, despite the harshness of the world. Amero’s desire to take a serious shot at music was ig - nited with the unexpected success of his debut album - fittingly called Change Your Life. SKI AREA & RESORT F EBRUARY 2013 5 Hawryluk living his dream with Wheat Kings Roblin product grew up wanting to play with the Western Hockey League team in Brandon By ROBIN WARK for Asessippi Life Roblin’s Jayce Hawryluk is thrilled to be able to pur - sue his hockey career with the Brandon Wheat Kings. “It is a dream come true,” the son of Terry and Sandra Hawryluk said in a phone in - terview. “I’ve always wanted to play in the WHL and to play for the Brandon Wheat Kings. It is so close to home. My parents come to almost every game.” Hawryluk remembers well going to Western Hockey League games while growing up to watch such Wheaties stars as Colby Ro - bak and Scott Glennie, who are now playing profession - ally. A rookie, who just turned 17, Hawryluk is quickly becoming a player fans of all ages come to watch. The 5-foot-10, 186-pound forward is second on the Wheat Kings in scoring with 28 points, and 10 goals, in 38 games, as of Jan. 30. On that date, Hawryluk was tied for ninth in the WHL in rookie scoring. He also had 26 pen - alty minutes. After accumu - lating eight points and three goals in eight games, Hawry - luk was named the Tip Top Tailors Brandon Wheat Kings Player of the Month for December. “As a 16-year-old, Jayce has played a significant role with our team this season,” Wheat Kings assistant coach Dave Anning wrote in an email interview. “He com - petes very hard and plays with a lot of pace to his game. He played for Team Manitoba at the Western Canada Under-16 Challenge Cup in Moose Jaw in 2011. He had 16 penalty minutes in four games and was named the team’s Player of the Game in a loss to Finland. “Jayce played a big role with our team, however could not play the last two games because of injury,” Team West head coach Don MacGillivray, who leads the Winnipeg Blues in the Mani - toba Junior Hockey League, wrote in an email interview. “He has a real competitive spirit and plays hard.” Drafted in the second round, 32nd overall, in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft, Hawryluk had a standout sea - son last winter with the Parkland Rangers. He fin - ished fourth in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League in goals (31) and points (67). Last summer he worked out with current teammates Ryan Pulock and Jens Meilleur, who used to play for the Way - wayseecappo Wolverines of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. “They pushed me every day to be stronger and faster,” said Hawryluk, who also focused on the mental as - pects of the game in the sum - mer. Even with all of the hard work and his previous suc - cess, he still had to adjust to major junior hockey. He said the game is more physical and you have less time with the puck. “It has been a big step that’s for sure. ... The first shift everything was a lot faster. Everybody is a lot more skilled and bigger guys. ... Every player’s an elite player.” Off-ice adjustment In addition, Hawryluk had to adjust to things off the ice. He noted that even the new school was an adjustment as it was much bigger and he didn’t know everyone like back home. “We are gone a lot. We have to get our homework done and we have study halls. ... It is hard to do, but it can be done.” As the season has gone on, Hawryluk has made the necessary adjustments. On the ice, he is getting more ice time and more power-play time. “I just feel a lot more com - fortable out there with the puck,” he said. The rookie has certainly had an impact and impressed his veteran teammates. “He is a gritty player who can put the puck in the net,” teammate Chad Robinson of Minnedosa said in a phone interview. Family support Hawryluk believes his family has played a crucial role in his success. He re - members well the support his grandfather, the late Borden Hawryluk, provided for his hockey career. “He’d call me to come down to his office and he’d al - ways have something for me ... gloves, sticks, doughnuts ... I wish he’d been able to watch me now. I know he is watching from above.” Hawryluk’s father has coached him in the past. Both of his parents have driven him to countless practices and games, while he noted that his mom is always posi - tive.
