Dress for Manitoba conditions
Enjoy your day at the hill by following these suggestions
A day at the ski hill can be fun, but
without the proper gear, you’ll end up
with frostbite or sweating. Here’s what
to wear while skiing, boarding or tub -
ing.
Wear the following to make up the
first layer:
Thin, wicking, thermal shirt. It
should be fitted to your chest, and it
shouldn’t slide around while you walk.
This will be your base garment, and it
should fit you well.
Tight, thermal pants. They should
also be thin, and they should be pressed
up against your legs. These will be the
base for your legs.
Make sure you have everything you
need for the second layer.
Additional layers should avoid being
cotton as cotton will not wick moisture
as synthetic materials or wool are able
to do. It doesn’t need to be as tight, but
it should still fit well. You should wear
one with a long neck, as this will keep
you warmer.
Sweatpants. They should be rela -
tively tight, or else it will be too bulky
to put anything else on.
Dress into the third layer.
Slide on a ski jacket. This does need
to fit you, but not perfectly. As long as
it’s not too small, anything will do.
Make sure that it is a ski jacket - not a
hoodie, not a sweatshirt, but a ski
jacket. Ski jackets are made special to
keep you warm while skiing. If your
jacket has a powder skirt, clip that on
too.
Put on ski pants. Once again, you
You have dreamed it,
we can make it memorable.
Wedding Packages
A wide range of menu options and full
packages are available to suite all budgets.
You will be working with an Event Planner
throughout the entire planning process of
your special day. The Event Planner is a
trained member of our team who will handle
all of the food & beverage and set-up
details of your wedding day. This includes
recommending local vendors that match
both your taste and budget.
need to wear ski pants, not anything
else. Ski pants have an inner layer to
prevent snow from getting in, which is
very helpful.
Add the final touches
Layer your socks, a thin, cotton sock
on the bottom layer for breathability,
and a warm wool or other type thicker
sock over that works well for me.
Layer your socks, a thin, cotton sock
on the bottom layer for breathability,
and a warm wool or other type thicker
sock over that works well for me.
Put on ski boots. Any other boots
won’t clip into your skis. Make sure
they fit you well, because you wouldn’t
want those falling off.
Wear goggles. These aren’t necessary,
but they do a great deal of good. Goggles
are recommended on windy days, or if
it’s precipitating. The bigger the better.
Slip on a gator. Gators are basically
felt tubes that you slip on your neck,
which you can pull over your mouth on
cold days. They are very helpful, and are
recommended.
Put on a hat or helmet. Helmet is pre -
ferred, but a hat is fine too. If you do
anything dangerous, where you could
fall even as an expert skier, wear a hel -
met.
Put on ski gloves. Make sure that
they are thick, and not regular gloves.
Ski gloves are thicker and have a rubber
lining on the outside for easy grip.
These aren’t optional, because if you
don’t wear them, you’ll have frostbite af -
ter about an hour.
A wedding party poses for photographs in front of the main Asessippi Ski Area & Resort lodge on Dec. 31, 2011
Something old, something new,
a wedding with an amazing view
By LISA LAMBERT
for Asessippi Life
If you’re looking for some -
thing unique for an upcom -
ing wedding, imagine a cere -
mony overlooking the Shell
Valley. Then picture the wed -
ding party riding a chairlift
down to the main chalet for
an evening with family and
friends. That’s only one of
several setting options avail -
able at Asessippi Ski Area &
Resort which recently added
wedding destination to its im -
pressive list of amenities and
services.
“We have just done a few
wedding shows last year,”
wrote Blue Moffatt, the re -
sort’s Food and Beverage
Manager and Summer Opera -
tions Manager, in an inter -
view conducted via email.
“This is something new to
promote the wedding
market.”
Having already partici -
pated in bridal shows in
Yorkton and Brandon, Mof -
fatt plans to head to a show
in Regina this year and an -
other one in Winnipeg in
January 2013. As for getting
the word out, she cited a
cross-promotion with a local
photographer, whose images
from a winter wedding are
featured on the resort’s web -
site, and how this has helped
“create a marketing
package.”
“It’s all here,” she de -
tailed. “We can pull together
your ceremony, your dinner
and your dance all in one lo -
cation. Having an experi -
enced wedding planner is
also invaluable.
There are many
components to
planning your
wedding that
you don’t think
of. All inclusive
packages with
a ccommoda -
tions, dinner,
etc. can be cre -
ated.”
Some of the
choices featured
on the website
are Tie the Knot
at the Top; Sugar Shack I and
II, with banquet rooms mod -
elled after French Canadian
Sugar Shacks; The River’s
Edge, where couples can ex -
change their vows alongside
the Shell River and transpor -
tation can be provided by
horse and carriage. A garden
setting is also an option for
summer nuptials.
The resort provides full
catering of weddings on-site
thanks to a partnership with
the Russell Inn Food and Bev -
erage staff. Moffatt added that
for summer weddings there
are a lot of areas for camping
as well as Bed & Breakfasts
for overnight guests. “We will
build your wedding package
including accommodation at
Russell Inn for you, if you
wish. Honeymoon packages
are also available. A one-stop
shop as such.”
What kind of
timeline does
planning a wed -
ding involve
and what sort of
costs or price
range are cou -
ples looking at?
“I will work
with any
budget. It can be
simple or very
elegant,” wrote
the veteran wed -
ding planner. “I
have booked
and catered over 300 wed -
dings in my career and there
are many different styles of
weddings, let me tell you.
Some can take one meeting,
with others I meet weekly
with the brides. It depends on
the degree of the event. I can
do all components of the
event as a planner. Or we can
simply do the ceremony,
which would be probably one
meeting. Booking a location
for your wedding can be for a
ceremony venue as little as
$300 or up to a full service
planned event for $75 per per -
son. All very dependent on
your event.”
FIRST PRIZE: $10,000
When asked if they have
any weddings booked for the
new year, Moffatt indicated
there are currently three
bookings and possibly a
fourth one: “One atop of the
Quad in a tent then they ride
the lift down, one at the Old
Asessippi town site, one at
the edge of the river and an -
other still discussing.”
Since this interview was
done, the resort has con -
firmed a total of 10 weddings
booked for 2013.
Which is the most popular
way for couples to tie the
knot?
“They love the idea of get -
ting married at the top of the
Quad and riding the lift
down,” she noted.
As for other notable
trends when it comes to wed -
dings these days, she ex -
plained, “Well, over the past
years, it has become about
the décor. Lots of money has
been put toward the finishing
touches. There are several
decorators in the area that
we work with.”
In addition to working
with talented local decora -
tors, “The great thing about
this location is we have the
décor - the great outdoors.
What a view! As well, plan -
ning what is special to you,”
Moffatt summed up.
Don Amero knows he is on the right road
With four albums now, the Winnipeg singer/songwriter will return to Asessippi
Don Amero remembers it
well. It was the day that
changed his life.
On Sept. 15, 2007, he
walked off his job as a hard -
wood flooring installer and
set out to pursue music full -
time. And what a good day
that turned out to be! In the
past four years, Amero has
released three albums that
generated two national
awards and 12 nominations.
He has toured the country
from coast-to-coast, been in -
vited to play festivals, been
asked to perform with sym -
phony accompaniment, and
appeared on national televi -
sion concerts. While a lot has
happened for Amero in a
seemingly short time, in actu -
ality, it was a long road for
him to get to where he is to -
day.
From the notoriously
tough North End of Winni -
peg, Amero faced his share of
adversity growing up. With
poverty, gangs, drugs and
violence all around, fortu -
nately, his life was tempered
by love, support, and faith in
a Greater Power. Shaped and
molded by his own experi -
ences, Amero’s music now
carries both the depth of
hardship and luminosity of
hope. For all who take the
time to listen, his message is
one of encouragement, posi -
tivity and beauty, despite the
harshness of the world.
Amero’s desire to take a
serious shot at music was ig -
nited with the unexpected
success of his debut album -
fittingly called Change Your
Life. Released in the fall of
2006, it garnered the #1 spot
Don Amero
on the National Aboriginal
Countdown and received a to -
tal of seven nominations for
the Aboriginal Peoples
Choice Music Awards (APC -
MAs). In February of 2009,
Amero is deeply inspired
by his life, his family, and his
surroundings. That’s why he
makes a point of spending as
much time as possible at the
cabin, canoeing in the wilder -
Even though you could
Hawryluk living his dream with Wheat Kings
Roblin product grew up wanting to play with the Western Hockey League team in Brandon
By ROBIN WARK
for Asessippi Life
Roblin’s Jayce Hawryluk
is thrilled to be able to pur -
sue his hockey career with
the Brandon Wheat Kings.
“It is a dream come true,”
the son of Terry and Sandra
Hawryluk said in a phone in -
terview. “I’ve always wanted
to play in the WHL and to
play for the Brandon Wheat
Kings. It is so close to home.
My parents come to almost
every game.”
Hawryluk remembers
well going to Western
Hockey League games while
growing up to watch such
Wheaties stars as Colby Ro -
bak and Scott Glennie, who
are now playing profession -
ally. A rookie, who just
turned 17, Hawryluk is
quickly becoming a player
fans of all ages come to
watch.
The 5-foot-10, 186-pound
forward is second on the
Wheat Kings in scoring with
28 points, and 10 goals, in 38
games, as of Jan. 30. On that
date, Hawryluk was tied for
ninth in the WHL in rookie
scoring. He also had 26 pen -
alty minutes. After accumu -
lating eight points and three
goals in eight games, Hawry -
luk was named the Tip Top
Tailors Brandon Wheat
Kings Player of the Month
for December.
“As a 16-year-old, Jayce
has played a significant role
with our team this season,”
Wheat Kings assistant coach
Dave Anning wrote in an
email interview. “He com -
with a lot of pace to his
game. He has a quick release
National stage
Hawryluk is also on
Hockey Canada’s radar. He
played for Team Manitoba at
the Western Canada Under-16
Challenge Cup in Moose Jaw
in 2011. Earlier this year
Hawryluk suited up for Team
penalty minutes in four
games and was named the
team’s Player of the Game in
a loss to Finland.
“Jayce played a big role
with our team, however
could not play the last two
games because of injury,”
Team West head coach Don
MacGillivray, who leads the
Winnipeg Blues in the Mani -
toba Junior Hockey League,
wrote in an email interview.
“He has a real competitive
spirit and plays hard.”
Drafted in the second
round, 32nd overall, in the
2011 WHL Bantam Draft,
Hawryluk had a standout sea -
son last winter with the
Parkland Rangers. He fin -
ished fourth in the Manitoba
AAA Midget Hockey League
in goals (31) and points (67).
Last summer he worked out
with current teammates Ryan
Pulock and Jens Meilleur,
who used to play for the Way -
wayseecappo Wolverines of
the Manitoba Junior Hockey
League.
“They pushed me every
day to be stronger and
faster,” said Hawryluk, who
also focused on the mental as -
pects of the game in the sum -
mer.
Even with all of the hard
work and his previous suc -
cess, he still had to adjust to
major junior hockey. He said
the game is more physical
and you have less time with
the puck.
“It has been a big step
that’s for sure. ... The first
shift everything was a lot
faster. Everybody is a lot
more skilled and bigger guys.
... Every player’s an elite
player.”
Off-ice adjustment
In addition, Hawryluk had
to adjust to things off the ice.
With 72 regular season games
compared to 44, more atten -
tion had to be paid to eating
right, working out and rest -
ing.
“Young players have a lot
justed very well and is con -
tinuing to learn from our
older players as to how to use
his time wisely and develop a
positive routine.”
Hawryluk had to learn
how to balance a busy hockey
schedule, including long road
trips, with his studies at Cro -
cus Plains Regional Secon -
dary School in Brandon. He
noted that even the new
school was an adjustment as
it was much bigger and he
didn’t know everyone like
back home.
“We are gone a lot. We
have to get our homework
done and we have study
halls. ... It is hard to do, but
it can be done.”
As the season has gone
on, Hawryluk has made the
necessary adjustments. On
the ice, he is getting more ice
time and more power-play
time.
“I just feel a lot more com -
fortable out there with the
puck,” he said.
The rookie has certainly
had an impact and impressed
his veteran teammates.
“He is a gritty player who
can put the puck in the net,”
teammate Chad Robinson of
Minnedosa said in a phone
interview.
Family support
Hawryluk believes his
family has played a crucial
role in his success. He re -
members well the support his
grandfather, the late Borden
Hawryluk, provided for his
hockey career.
“He’d call me to come
down to his office and he’d al -
ways have something for me
... gloves, sticks, doughnuts ...
I wish he’d been able to
watch me now. I know he is
watching from above.”
Hawryluk’s father has
coached him in the past. Both
of his parents have driven
him to countless practices
and games, while he noted
that his mom is always posi -
tive. He appreciates all that
they have done for him.
“They have been my big -
gest supporters, that’s for
sure.”
Robbery at Asessippi townsite in the early 1900s
Asessippi Ski Area & Resort is the new kid on the block in an area steeped in local history
The following article, writ -
ten by A.R. Devlin, was origi -
nally published in Manitoba
Pageant, a Manitoba Histori -
cal Society publication in
Autumn 1972, Volume 18,
Number 2.

A few miles upstream
from where the Shell River
joins the Assiniboine, the
McKay family established a
boarding house and store in
the 1890s or early 1900s.
There was also a grist mill
and sawmill run by water
power. In the early years,
some very spectacular log
drives took place on the Shell
River, between the Duck
Mountain area and the dam
at Asessippi.
In the years between 1910
and 1914, many central Euro -
pean immigrants came to the
region and settled around the
Leonard and Bolton districts.
These people came mainly
from what was known as
Galicia, and for short were
called Gillies by the local peo -
ple.
One hot, sultry afternoon
in August, four Galicians
drove down the Asessippi
hill, with a fast-stepping team
of bay horses hitched to a
democrat. (This is a fourwheeled
vehicle, usually with
double seats similar to the
surrey with the fringe on
top.) They came down the hill
from the east and trotted the
horses across the bridge on
the Shell River. One man
dropped off on the bridge,
carrying a shotgun, as sentry
from that direction; another
store, armed with shotguns.
Cash and safe stolen
The startled attendant was
easily overcome, and was tied
and gagged. The men took all
the cash from the wooden
drawer in the counter, then
carried the small safe out and
loaded it on the democrat.
The attendant had convinced
them that he did not know
the combination, this being
handled by Mr. McKay sr.,
who was away at the time.
The outpost sentries were
called in, and the four men
drove back across the bridge,
About an hour later, a
farmer customer discovered
the store attendant and re -
leased him. After a quick
meeting with some of the
managers of the boarding
house, the grist and sawmills,
etc., a horseman was dis -
patched to Russell to inform
the local sheriff, George
Wishart, of the robbery.
(There was no telephone in
the district.) As it is 14 miles
from Asessippi to Russell, the
sheriff did not leave until the
next day. On arrival, he pro -
ceeded to form a posse to
round up the robbers. Fortu -
nately the attendant was able
to give a good description of
the men, and even identify
Ru sse ll, MB 204 -773 -224 4
two by name.
The sheriff appointed four
men to act as deputies: Jack
Devlin, a Boer war veteran;
Jack Adams, a veteran of the
Riel Rebellion; a Mr. Arm -
strong and Tom McLennan.
All were armed with rifles.
On horseback the posse,
headed by George Wishart,
rode down the trail after the
robbers, but by this time the
tracks were dim.
About ten miles from the
scene of the crime, they ques -
tioned a few farmers who
were very frightened, but
who volunteered the informa -
tion that some men had
passed by the day before and
seemed in a great hurry.
Later they received word of
where these men had
camped. On arrival there,
they found the small safe un -
opened. Several attempts had
been made to blast it open
with stumping powder but
these were unsuccessful.
By this time, the sheriff
had fairly accurate informa -
tion on who the robbers
were, and the next day was
able to pick up all four sus -
pects at their homes without
having to use force. The men
were taken to Russell and
lodged in the local jail, then
later moved to Minnedosa for
the fall assizes. They all re -
ceived sentences of several
years for armed robbery.
This episode took place
before the formation of the
Manitoba Provincial Police,
who were later incorporated
into the RCMP.
■
In 1984, The Russell Inn
was a 13-year-old motel with
30 rooms, a formal dining
room, coffee shop and lounge.
Business was good in the sum -
mer, okay throughout the
shoulder seasons (spring &
fall) but like a lot of prairie
properties, winter reserva -
tions often went cold.
That year, Daymon Guillas
was hired as general manager
of the motel in Russell – a bus -
tling town on the Yellowhead
Highway, about halfway be -
tween Winnipeg and Saska -
toon – and he remembers step -
ping out of his car and gazing
at the highway running in
front of the property. There
was something about the loca -
tion that seemed promising.
“I looked up and down the
Yellowhead that day and said
to myself, ‘there’s a far
greater opportunity for us
here than just running a road -
side motel,’” Guillas recalls. “I
could see that by adding a
cluster of complementary
businesses, we could get more
people to stop.”
Four season success
Almost 30 years later, Guil -
las is still getting people to
stop. Today, The Russell Inn &
Conference Centre is a 97room
hotel with full service
conference centre, pool, wa -
terslide and indoor hot tub,
fitness and games rooms, fam -
ily dining room, Pizza Hut Ex -
press, Subway restaurant,
neighbourhood-style pub, beer
store and an adjoining Esso
gas bar and C-store complete
with a Tim Horton’s fran -
chise.
Over the years, The Rus -
sell Inn’s business cluster has
blossomed even more for Guil -
las and his two partners that
own the property. In 2004, The
Russell Inn purchased the
Jolly Lodger Motel across the
street and in 2007 opened Ho -
tel Dieu, a three-suite bou -
tique hotel in a heritage build -
ing in downtown Russell.
Since then it also converted a
former service station/restau -
rant into hotel suites.
All this growth has cer -
tainly contributed to The Rus -
sell Inn’s ongoing success but
it’s been the inclusion of the
Asessippi Ski Area & Resort
into the ownership group’s
portfolio (the company is the
majority shareholder of the
ski resort) that has turned the
hotel into a year-round desti -
nation.
“The Russell Inn is now
busy over the four seasons,”
Guillas declares. “Summers
are taken up by the tourist
and seniors travel market,
spring and fall are big confer -
ence seasons and hunting is
huge here in Russell. But,
thanks to our involvement in
the ski resort, we’ve become
the ‘playground of the prai -
ries’ and our busiest time is
winter.”
The Russell Inn is one of
the area’s largest employers
with 130 people staffing the
hotel’s business entities. An -
other 200 work in season at
the ski resort. Guillas notes
that the ski resort attracts
visitors within a 500-kilometre
radius, encircling Winnipeg,
Regina, Moose Jaw, Saska -
toon, The Pas and Minot, ND.
“We attract nearly 100,000 ski -
ers a year.”
To capture even more of
the outdoor-inclined market,
The Russell Inn launched As -
essippi Cottage Cove in 2005, a
year-round vacation home de -
velopment at the Asessippi
site. Guillas says the fourphase
initiative is designed to
be affordable to middle in -
come families and by the time
it’s finished, Cottage Cove will
have 500 vacation homes.
“Besides downhill skiing
and snowboarding, we want to
develop Asessippi into a fourseason
outdoor adventure des -
tination with river tubing, zip
lines, all-terrain biking, snow -
mobiling and cross-country
skiing,” he remarks.
Investing in a ‘prairie play -
ground,’ as Guillas describes
the ski resort, has been a sig -
nificant business decision for
The Russell Inn. Besides guar -
anteeing increased traffic to
the hotel, the development has
promised it a successful fu -
ture.
“Developing the ski resort
in the 1990s has been impor -
tant because it took a strug -
gling company and turned it
into one that’s expanded sig -
nificantly and continues to
grow,” Guillas states.
Rooms added
Since its establishment in
1971, The Russell Inn has un -
dergone renovation, recon -
struction and retrofit to arrive
at its current 97-room configu -
ration. The more recent re -
make totalled $1.8 million and
was completed in 2007 with
the addition of 27 rooms and
4,000 square feet of office
space. One unique feature of
the property is an energyefficient
heating system which
acquires warmth from geo -
thermal sources and waste
heat. Guillas says the original
system was installed in 2001 at
a cost of $700,000 and because
it was designed to be added to,
the 27 new rooms were all eas -
ily connected.
“The heating system
achieves a number of things
for us,” Guillas explains. “For
instance, when we built our
new pool, we ensured that the
system captured waste heat
from the atmosphere and after
being dehumidified it’s used
to heat the pool. We’ve never
turned the pool heater on to
heat the pool and in the sum -
mer we have to pump cold wa -
ter in to cool down the tem -
perature.”
The facility’s system also
takes waste heat from the
kitchen and compressor rooms
and uses it to heat guest room
water tanks. As well, all the
hotel’s guest rooms are heated
geothermally and with heat
pumps.
“It’s a great system be -
cause there’s nothing that’ll
break down and it’s whisperquiet,”
adds Guillas.
To complement The Rus -
sell Inn’s expanded facilities,
the hotel’s conference centre
offers all-inclusive packages to
budget-minded clients looking
for rural ambience. Guillas
says rates are tailored to indi -
vidual needs and the confer -
ence centre can accommodate
a wide variety of events.
“We have three rooms –
the Yellowhead, which holds
230 delegates, the Route 83,
which is designed for smaller
groups of 60, and the Ases -
sippi, which is perfect for inti -
mate meetings,” he explains.
“As well, all the conference
rooms and guest rooms – from
standards to suites – feature
high-speed Internet.”
Getting more people to stop
at the Russell Inn may have
been Daymon Guillas’ intent
when he envisioned building a
cluster of complementary
businesses next to the prop -
erty in the ‘80s. Now, with an
expanded facility and three
other hotel properties tapped
into the seasonal success of
the Asessippi Ski Area & Re -
sort, Guillas’ goal is to get
folks to not only stop, but to
stay and play as well.
“We’re proud of our prop -
erties and what they bring to
Russell and the surrounding
communities,” he declares.
“I’ve been to other parts of
Canada and I haven’t seen a
situation quite like this: a
cluster of businesses on one
property owned by one group.
It’s unique.”
With its cluster of complementary businesses, The Russell Inn Hotel
& Conference Centre is getting people to stop, stay and play year-round
From top: Signage welcomes
guests to the Russell Inn; the
Inn’s pool and waterslide is
popular; Asessippi Ski Area
& Resort is more popular
every season; the first phase
of Cottage Cove at Asessippi
is over 75 percent sold.
