20 | Voice of the Village Announcements The way to happiness band Dust off those dancing shoes and head to the Sunland-Tujunga Elks Lodge at 10137 Commerce Ave. in Tujunga on Saturday, March 6 from 8-11:30 p.m. The Sunland-Tujunga Rotary Club has teamed up with Bob Sullivan’s The Way to Happiness Outdoors Club and his 14-piece big band for community service fundraiser. “You can’t find a live dance band anymore to dance to,” Sullivan said. “All they have is DJs or loud rock ‘n’ roll. We’ve decided to change that and bring back the Big Dance Band. Come by Saturday night and see what we are talking about.” Friends of the Library Book Sale The Friends of the Library will be holding a book sale March 13 at the bookstore and in the library multipurpose room. The sale will take place from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. There will be books on most subjects, including fiction (paperback and hardcover), nonfiction (science, psychology, history, women, and politics), science fiction, and lots of children’s books. Prices will range from 10 cents to 50 cents, plus a little more for our special books; we have some newer hardcover fiction and nonfiction. We also accept donations of books in salable condition (no encyclopedias). Don’t forget the date: Saturday, March 13. All monies from these sales are used to purchase books, DVDs, supplies, etc. for the library as well as for many of the programs at the library. Dancing at the Elks The Way to Happiness Band was in the Marina Del Rey boat parade last Christmas and won Best in Show and Best Band honors. The band has four fabulous horns, exciting singers and a wicked rhythm section. Besides regular dancing to all the old favorites, there will be a dance contest judged by professional dancers Noelle North and Navarre Matlovsky of the Kumaras Dance Center. Trophies will be handed out for the best Salsa, Swing, Rock and Soul, Hip Hop, Disco and Foxtrot. If interested in Land tour only, prices are: • Cash discount land only $2049 + tips $125 Shirley Lorenz Kellstrom of Van Nuys, Calif. died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010. She was 82. Kellstrom was born Shirley Roberta Lorenz on Sept. 4, 1927, in Milwaukee, Wis. to Gus and Amelia Lorenz. After relocating to Van Nuys, Kellstrom taught kindergarten and first grade for 37 years at Hubbard Street Elementary School in Sylmar, Calif. She was extensively involved at the school, including serving as School Improvement Coordinator, a Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA) provider for new teachers, Faculty President and Assistant Principal. Kellstrom participated in many community and activist groups, including California Federation of Business and Professional Women, International Training in Communications, League of Women Voters, National Organization for Women, and California State Association of Parliamentarians - Southern Area. The Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council appointed her Parliamentarian immediately after their certification in 2004. She served on the boards of directors of the Little Landers Historical competition dancer Sonia Tatulian and her dance partner Phillip Powell will be competing, and I have seen them dance. They smoke! “The Elks is the perfect place for this,” said Rotary President Richard Stewart. “They have a large hardwood floor that was just made for dancing.” There will be a silent auction during the evening. You also will receive a free ticket for the door prize raffle. Light food and drinks available for purchase. Obituary - Shirley Kellstrom, 82 Society and the Hillview Mental Health Center in Pacoima. Survivors include her four children, Nanci Caillouet and David Kellstrom of Van Nuys and Judith Capper and Susan Kellstrom of Los Angeles; her sister Judy James of San Diego; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Army Maj. Carl Kellstrom. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 13 at 2:30 p.m. at the Old North Church of Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, 6300 Forest Lawn Dr. in Los Angeles. Immediately following the service there will be a reception at McGroarty Arts Center, 7570 McGroarty Terrace in Tujunga. Voice of the Village Knights annual Lenten Fish Fries They’re back – and just as good as ever. Come join the crowd for the now-legendary Knights of Columbus Annual Lenten Fish Fries, starting Friday, February 19, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Hall, 10275 Tujunga Canyon Blvd. The Knights serve Canadian Cod battered, breaded and fried to perfection. Your dinner will be served with french fries, coleslaw, salad bar, and your choice of coffee or punch. In these challenging economic times, they’ve kept the price the same as last year: adults $6.50, kids $3.50. Homemade desserts are extra but worth the small price. See you there – and bring a friend! Troubleshooting continued from page 4 an intermittent problem that might disappear while you are trying to locate it. It can last for minutes, or days during wet weather until the line dries out. The water or moisture could be either on the phone company’s lines, the customer’s lines, or both. The good news is that if there is a problem on the phone company’s lines they are responsible for handling it at no charge to you. The phone company is responsible for providing a good dial tone on the circuit path up to a location, referred to as the “Minimum Point of Entry” (abbreviated MPOE and pronounced “em po” with a long O); the point where the phone company wires connect to the customer’s home wires. The MPOE is usually at a device or a network interface box on the side, back or under the house. It is easy for the homeowner to determine if the problem is coming from the phone company or the inside wiring if they have a modern interface box. Inside the modern network interface box the phone company’s wires are conveniently connected to a female jack. The box also has a male plug on a short cord that is connected to phone wires of the house, which completes the circuit path when connected to the interface jack. This connecting device makes it easy for the homeowner to test and listen to the phone company’s line at that jack. This is done by unplugging the inside wiring of the home (and any problems associated with the inside wiring) and plugging a good phone into the jack at the MPOE and listening or dialing out. If there is a clear dial tone coming from the phone company’s connection, the noise problem must be with the inside wiring or equipment. If there is inappropriate noise present on the phone company’s wires, call the phone company to fix it at no cost to you. While you have the house wiring disconnected, you might want to ask the phone company repair service to test the line from their central office while you wait. They have equipment that can determine problems or shorts on their side of the MPOE. An important factor in this is that intermittent problems with moisture or equipment on their side might be gone by the time they come out to look at it. You at least will know they have an intermittent problem that will continue to be your intermittent problem, so to speak. If the line coming in from the phone company is clear but when you reconnect the plug at the interface box and you still have noise inside, then the problem is narrowed down to your inside wiring. Now you either fix it yourself or call a professional cabling contractor. When you are done at the interface, plug the original connector back into the jack, tidy up the wires and close the cover properly to protect the wiring and to keep out water, dirt and insects. I look for bad or wet wires at the MPOE and cut them back to good dry wire, strip the ends and reconnect them. If a source of moisture can not be readily found and handled, as there can be multiple cables going to various locations, most people would be wise to engage the services of a reasonably priced professional who has the tools, equipment and expertise to locate and handle the problem. Replacing one or more cables might be necessary. Phone currents normally are relatively harmless. However, as a word of caution: you might find yourself handling numerous wires at the same time - keep the hot ones out of your mouth! Lola Herberg passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2010. She was 93. Herberg was born Lola Alberta Patrick at The Women’s Hospital in Pasadena, Calif. on Oct. 28, 1916, the fourth of nine siblings. As a child she lived with her family on Harriet Street in Altadena. She had four children of her own and a stepson that survived her, along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-greatgrandchildren. Herberg lived with Wolff for the past 15 years. Herberg will be laid to rest alongside her husband John Herberg in Gearhart, Ore., where they lived | 21 for 35 years. In attendance will be her daughter Anita Fischer and son-inlaw of Marietta, Ga., stepson Nelson Herberg of Flagstaff, Ariz., Wolff, and other family members. Her son Alvin Downs and his family reside in Gautier, Miss. Her son Darrell (Jim) Downs, a Tujunga resident, passed away two years ago. Herberg loved all her family, her little dog Muffin, life and laughter. She was proud to be a part of the community’s Al Read’s restaurant’s family and often reminisced about her many enjoyable dining experiences while visiting with employees and customers.
