The Sunland-Tujunga Lions are enjoying
their “purring” season – the quiet days
between the holidays and the intensive
activity during the summer when
they produce the annual Watermelon
Festival. The Lions are great recyclers,
believing that it is better to find a new
use for things rather than trash them.
Sol del Valle Community Center Programs

Sol del Valle Community Center
is a non-profit Christian ministry
located at 10725 Penrose Street in Sun
Valley, near the corner of Penrose and
Sunland Blvd. It was created in 1987 by
Bethel Christian Reformed Church in
response to several social and economic
hardships.

Lion Cookie Dapp works yearround
collecting used eyeglasses,
but her busiest time is just before the
Community Center is to provide the
tools and resources for local residents
to discover and develop gifts that will
enrich their lives. It is our desire to
assist low-income families and at-risk
youth.
The community center offers a
wide variety of programs for children
including an after-school homework
mid-March turn-in
deadline. The glasses
are collected in
donation boxes around
the community, tallied
and packed, then sent
to Lions In Sight, a
foundation that sorts
the glasses, cleans,
repairs and labels
them, then repacks
them to be taken to
areas in need by teams
of Lions.
The team usually
takes about 20,000
pairs of glasses in their
personal luggage. For

Used hearing
aids also can be
donated in the Lions
In Sight boxes. These are sent to the
Lions Hearing Foundation, where they
are rebuilt and provided to people who
can’t afford them for a very nominal
cost. Recipients are sponsored by their
local Lions Club.
MEND (Meet Each Need with
Dignity) poverty center in Pacoima is
another recipient of the quiet work the
Lions do. When the Lions sponsored
club, tutoring, music academy, soccer
clinics, and two age-specific day camps
that run through the summer. Our
hope is that as children participate in
these programs, they will be equipped
to succeed as students.
The community center also offers
many programs for adults including
parenting and employment workshops,
ESL and Spanish classes, computer and
the drive to provide a vision clinic for
MEND 12 years ago, they found that
they could meet many of the center’s
needs.
The eyeglass cases in good condition
that are often donated along with the
glasses are cleaned and given to the
MEND Vision Clinic. Clothes, food,
toys and household items are collected
periodically and taken to MEND. The
number of people turning to MEND
for help has increased dramatically in

The holidays found the Lions
collecting used postage stamps to
donate to the Stamp Club at Our Lady
of Lourdes School, then after Christmas
they donate the greeting cards they
received to the school’s art program.
Ronald McDonald House benefits
from the Lions’ yearlong collection of
pull-top tabs from soda cans.
The tabs are taken to the Ronald
McDonald House in Pasadena, where
they are sold to help pay for families
to stay in the House while their
children are receiving either inpatient
or outpatient care at a nearby hospital,
including City of Hope in Duarte.
The Lions also donate books, games,
puzzles, art supplies, CDs and DVDs
to the House.

Honorary Sheriff. The filing fee is
$45 and the deadline for submitting
applications is March 17 by 11 a.m.

scheduled for April 2 - 4 at Sunland
