<strong>Waynesburg</strong> <strong>Prosperous</strong> & Beautiful News<br />
Streetscape set <strong>to</strong> begin construction in spring 2010<br />
The $1.6 million Streetscape project, which has been planned for several years, is<br />
scheduled <strong>to</strong> begin in March 2010 and be completed around <strong>the</strong> end of summer. Decorative<br />
sidewalks, streetlights and tree-lined streets are all part of <strong>the</strong> plan <strong>to</strong> enhance<br />
<strong>the</strong> down<strong>to</strong>wn area. The project is <strong>the</strong> result of an effort by <strong>the</strong> Borough of <strong>Waynesburg</strong>,<br />
<strong>Waynesburg</strong> <strong>Prosperous</strong> & Beautiful and <strong>Waynesburg</strong> University <strong>to</strong> make <strong>the</strong><br />
down<strong>to</strong>wn more appealing <strong>to</strong> businesses and residents. Allegheny Power and Comcast<br />
are also contributing <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> endeavor by burying <strong>the</strong>ir lines beneath <strong>the</strong> sidewalk.<br />
Windstream Communications will charge $52,000 <strong>to</strong> bury <strong>the</strong>ir lines, but <strong>the</strong> borough<br />
received a $60,000 state grant <strong>to</strong> cover this cost as well as some additional engineering<br />
and design work. In addition, Alpha Natural Resources recently announced that<br />
<strong>the</strong>y will contribute $20,000 <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> project.<br />

Several new businesses opened <strong>the</strong>ir doors in his<strong>to</strong>ric down<strong>to</strong>wn <strong>Waynesburg</strong><br />
throughout <strong>2009</strong>: Artisans, In Motion Dance + Fitness & Stage Door, L.P.S. Guitar,<br />
Phase 2 Graphics and Pocketsize Productions. <strong>Waynesburg</strong> <strong>Prosperous</strong> & Beautiful<br />

WP&B Receives Accreditation<br />
<strong>Waynesburg</strong> <strong>Prosperous</strong> & Beautiful received accreditation as a <strong>2009</strong> National Main<br />
Street Program for meeting <strong>the</strong> commercial district revitalization performance standards<br />
set by <strong>the</strong> National Trust Main Street Center. Each year, <strong>the</strong> National Trust and<br />
its coordinating program partners announce <strong>the</strong> list of accredited Main Street programs<br />
that have built strong revitalization organizations that have demonstrated <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
ability <strong>to</strong> follow <strong>the</strong> Main Street methodology.<br />
The National Trust Main Street Center works in partnership with Coordinating<br />
Main Street Programs throughout <strong>the</strong> nation <strong>to</strong> identify <strong>the</strong> local programs that meet<br />
<strong>the</strong> National Trust’s 10 basic performance standards. These standards set <strong>the</strong> benchmarks<br />
for measuring an individual Main Street program’s application of <strong>the</strong> Main<br />
Street Four-Point Approach <strong>to</strong> commercial district revitalization. Evaluation criteria<br />
determines <strong>the</strong> communities that are building comprehensive and sustainable revitalization<br />
efforts and include standards such as developing a mission, fostering strong<br />
public-private partnerships, securing an operating budget, tracking economic progress,<br />
and preserving his<strong>to</strong>ric buildings.<br />
<strong>Waynesburg</strong> <strong>Prosperous</strong> & Beautiful’s performance was evaluated by <strong>the</strong> Pennsylvania<br />
Down<strong>to</strong>wn Center, which is <strong>the</strong> coordinating organization for Main Street programs<br />
in Pennsylvania.<br />
