County Pedalers came in second, and the Butler County Spinners & Weavers came in third. Visitors had the chance to watch live demonstrations of a professional sheep-herding dog, as well as sheepshearing demonstrations. This year’s festival also featured lamb cooking demonstrations, during which several area cooks prepared delicious lamb dishes and shared tricks, tips and recipes. Plenty of free lamb sampling was available. Other activities included live musical entertainment and children’s activities. The Sheep & Fiber Fest also included a Kid’s Pedal Tractor Pull & Auction. Children ages 3 to 10 had the opportunity to participate in a miniaturized version of a farm tractor pull, while adults could place bids to win a fully customized, collectible pedal tractor from the auction block. The authentic cast metal pedal tractors were fully customized by three local body shops: Kovalcheck’s Auto Body, T & A Services and Michael’s Auto Sales. These body shops donated their labor and materials to customize the generic metal tractors purchased by WP&B. This year’s customized pedal tractors were purchased by Andrea Dobbs of Wind Ridge, Mary Pruss of Washington and Wyatt Whipkey of Holbrook. The Kid’s Pedal Tractor Pull & Auction was sponsored by Log Cabin Fence Company, Ross Tractor Sales and Waynesburg Agway Service. A Photography Contest and Exhibit was also held in support of the 2009 Sheep & Fiber Fest. Contest winners were chosen prior to the festival, and all submitted photos were displayed at the PA Welcome Center off I-79 just north of Mt. Morris. Phyllis Woods of Nemacolin won Best of Show for her photograph entitled “Winter in Lippencott.” 50’s Fest & Car Cruise More than 200 classic cars, trucks and motorcycles traveled to downtown Waynesburg for the 8th annual 50’s Fest & Car Cruise on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, filling High Street as well as several side streets and parking lots. The event, hosted by Waynesburg Prosperous & Beautiful and sponsored in part by Hot Rod’s House of Bar-B-Que and WANB Radio, offered numerous activities reminiscent of the 1950’s along with the car show. Kids of all ages enjoyed contests in bubble gum blowing, 6
doing the limbo, spinning hula hoops and twisting to Chubby Checker’s classic “Twist” song. “The overcast skies and threat of rain didn't keep the cruisers away from this year's 50s Fest & Car Cruise,” said Doug Wilson, chairman of the 50’s Fest Committee and DJ for WANB. “A tremendous thank you to all of the people who worked so hard to make this one of the most successful cruises ever. “As always, we could not have the 50’s Fest without the cruisers. Thanks for bringing out your hot rods, street rods, rat rods, classic cars, trucks and motorcycles. We’re looking forward to seeing all of you again next year!” 50’s Fest volunteers awarded door prizes every half hour throughout the day, with the festival’s three largest prizes awarded in the late afternoon. Ed and Susan Matthews received the award for the farthest traveled registrant, having driven their 1940 Ford pickup 261 miles to Waynesburg from Denver, Pa. George Liberatore of Bentleyville won the raffle for the fully customized, collectible pedal car. The miniature hot rod, customized with sporty purple flames and an electric motor by T&A Auto Services in Carmichaels, was donated for the raffle by Glen Kinsey of Waynesburg. John and Anita Desearo of Uniontown won the 50/50 raffle drawing for a prize of $447 cash. In addition to these contests, another popular fundraiser was the sale of collectible 50’s Fest T-shirts. This year’s shirt featured an illustration of 50’s Fest volunteer Glen Kinsey’s 1929 Ford Roadster pickup truck in front of Hot Rod’s House of Bar-B-Que. The colorful design was hand drawn by local artist Colleen Nelson. There are no registration or admission fees for the 50’s Fest & Car Cruise. Funds are raised through sponsorship, the sale of T-shirts and the raffles. Proceeds from the 2009 event will enable WP&B and 50’s Fest volunteers to complete plans for the 9th annual cruise in September 2010. Holiday Open House On the evening of Friday, Dec. 4, downtown Waynesburg bustled with holiday shoppers, musicians played instruments on the street, and the clopping of horses’ hooves could be heard on the pavement. This old-fashioned atmosphere was all part of WP&B’s annual Holiday Open House. During the open house, most downtown merchants extended their business hours to 7 p.m. or later, with some offering in-store refreshments such as hot chocolate, cookies and cupcakes. The merchants also presented a silent auction, with items up for bid including jewelry, clothing, handmade gift items, and much more. Over $1,000 in merchandise was donated for the silent auction by the downtown businesses. All proceeds from the auction benefit programs of Waynesburg Prosperous & Beautiful. The Holiday Open House also included live vocalists and musicians, lit fire barrels, a spiced-nuts vendor, and horse-drawn carriage rides provided by Fred and Jessica Kiger and their team of Belgian horses.
