for our consideration in accepting the building
for use as a museum. For so young an organization,
such a large project caused great
concern as to our ability to handle it.
By the March 1979 meeting an agreement
had been reached with the Town Board on
the care and use of the school house. A general
clean up brought out several members and
served notice that our program was under
way.
Edward Logel was elected trustee in place
of Lawrence Victor who had resigned.
Our first flea market was held in August
and was a great success, financially and in
calling attention to the program of the society.
On Sept. 2, 1979 an Olde Tyme Picnic was
held at the Firemen's grounds in Strykersville.
It was a time of fun and excitement.
There were games for young and old. Music
by the Strykersville Town Band, displays of
antiques and crafts, a bazaar booth and dancing
in the evening.
Our Provisional Charter was received September
25, 1979. This was a fitting conclusion
to our first year. Remember-become involved.
Help preserve the history around us. Let us
all enjoy it and record it so future generations
may enjoy this wonderful heritage we
share.
Arcade
The end of an era came to Arcade this
year when the Village of Arcade officially
ended its steam service. When first begun
in the 1920's, the municipal steam system
heated most of the downtown buildings; in
recent years, it's only customer was the Arcade
Elementary School, which this year replaced
its 51 year old heating system with a heat
pump.
The Emkay Trading Corporation has purchased
and re-opened the former Borden Co.
plant on Church Street in Arcade. Some sections
of the plant dated back over half a
century, when it was owned by the Merrell-
Soule Company; the plant had been vacant
for several years, and extensive renovation
and modernization was necessary. Emkay, which
has another plant in Blasdell, began producing
cheese for wholesale and commercial customers
at its Arcade plant when it began production
earlier this year.
A new congregation, the Pioneer Christian
Fellowship, purchased the Sherman-Warner
farm, just east of the Cattaraugus County line,
and has converted the barn into its church.
The Calvary Alliance Church, just south of
the Village of Arcade, recently dedicated a
new sanctuary that was added onto the original
1957 church building. The Hope Lutheran
Church, just east of the village, recently began
operating a nursery school for 3 and 4
year olds four days a week; this is the community's
first nursery school.
An open house in October climaxed a renovation
of the Arcade Elementary School that
lasted over a year and cost in excess of
$1 million. The program included a new heating
plant, new windows, rearrangment of some
walls, and extensive redecorating. The building
consists of three sections, built in 1928,
1939, and 1954, and is part of Pioneer Central
School.
Editor's Note - Arcade, by way of historian,
Jeff Mason, seems to have provided all the
milestones for the county this issue.
- CHANGE OF ADDRESS -
If you are going to move, please notify this
office of your change of address. The Postal
Service will not forward 2nd class mail. They
simply tear off the old address and mail it
with the new address to us and charge a quarter
for the service. The old magazine is thrown
away. The result, if you receive your journal
at all, it will be late.
ARCADE
RURAL CEMETERY
The first cemetery in Arcade Village was
located on East Main St. near Allen St. It
was owned by the Congregational Church. In
the early 1850's interest was shown in establishing
a new community cemetery. Under
the guidance of Col. Shephard, an Association
was organized, land purchased and a public
dedication held Oct. 9, 1855. Since that time,
more land has been purchased until the Association
now owns approx. 28 acres. The
number of burials is now considerably more
than 2000.
