The community of Marietta, Ohio, was settled in<br />
1788 by Revolutionary War veterans and became the<br />
fi rst settlement of the Northwest Territory. Now a city of<br />
14,000, Marietta saw its greatest growth during the oil<br />
boom of the late 19th century. Still, Marietta has retained<br />
a particular pioneer spirit of independence and outward<br />
New England charm. Its historical signifi cance also<br />
makes Marietta a popular location for tourists around<br />
the country.<br />
Marietta is a riverboat town situated at the confl uence<br />
of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers, and many of<br />

Marietta is part of the Marietta-Parkersburg metropolitan<br />
area, which has a population of more than<br />
130,000. It is located 120 miles southeast of Columbus,<br />
Ohio; 140 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and 90<br />
miles north of Charleston, W.Va.<br />
Direct air service is available from Washington,<br />
D.C., with multiple daily fl ights out of the Mid-Ohio Valley<br />
Airport in Wood County, W.Va., located fi ve minutes<br />
from Marietta. There is also a Lakefront Lines bus stop<br />
on the <strong>College</strong> campus, and tickets can be purchased<br />
through Campus Services.<br />
