GAME 1: SAINT JOHN’S 55 VS. MARIETTA 14<br />
No. 3 Saint John’s University scored the fi rst 55 points and<br />
cruised to a 55-14 victory over visiting Marietta, who snapped its<br />
seven-game win streak in season openers. Sophomore George<br />
Davis led Marietta’s ground attack with 11 carries for 42 yards and<br />
one touchdown, a six-yard run in the fourth quarter. Sophomore<br />
Dexter Hughes, who made his fi rst start under center for the<br />
Pioneers, completed 10-of-25 passes and threw for 119 yards.<br />
Sophomore Ryan Merrill went 5-of-10 in a back-up role. He threw<br />
for 42 yards and one touchdown, a nine-yard strike to freshman<br />
Camden Dierkes in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Ryan Dawson led<br />
Marietta’s receivers with fi ve grabs for 58 yards. Senior linebacker<br />
Carter Shaver fi nished with a game-high 14 tackles, including one<br />
sack. Sophomore defensive back Clinton Thompson added 10<br />
tackles, while junior Grant Cowell and senior Brian Hahn had nine<br />
and eight hits, respectively.<br />
Marietta’s attempt to knock off Baldwin-Wallace <strong>College</strong> was<br />
denied by a strong performance from the No. 14 Yellow Jackets,<br />
resulting in a 24-6 victory for Baldwin-Wallace. Marietta fi nished with<br />
211 total yards with 84 coming via the run and 127 by way of the<br />
pass. Backup Ryan Merrill fi nished the evening 12-of-29 and threw<br />
for 104 yards with one touchdown. Sophomore Ryan Dawson pulled<br />
in fi ve catches for 40 yards, including the lone score. Sophomore<br />
George Davis once again led the ground game with 18 carries for<br />
36 yards. Junior Grant Cowell had a team-high 13 stops, while<br />
sophomore Rich Castagna and senior Brian Hahn added 11 and 10<br />
tackles, respectively<br />
