Third Sunday of Easter
Last week we heard that Jesus appeared to the gathered disciples in a locked room, probably in
Jerusalem. In today's Gospel, the disciples are no longer in Jerusalem; they are in Galilee, returning
to their work of fishing. Simon Peter is still presented in the role of leader: when he announces that
he is going fishing, the other disciples follow. They spend the night fishing but are unsuccessful.
Jesus calls to them from the shore, but the disciples do not recognize him immediately. Still, they
follow the stranger's instructions and bring in a large haul of fish. It is at this point that the “disciple
whom Jesus loved” realizes that Jesus is appearing to them. Upon hearing this news, Simon Peter
leads the way again, jumping from the boat and swimming to shore. The other disciples follow in the
boat, dragging the fish.
The disciples have brought to shore a tremendous catch of fish that Jesus has directed them to find. But once on the shore, they
see that Jesus has already prepared fish and bread on a charcoal fire. Jesus directs the disciples to bring their catch of fish as well.
Jesus is host at the meal that follows, feeding the disciples the bread and fish.
This can be seen as an allusion to our gathering for the celebration of the Mass. In the Eucharist, we too are fed by Jesus in the
bread and wine that have become his very Body and Blood. We also find in this story insight about the Presentation of the Gifts at
Mass. The gifts we bring to the altar, bread and wine, are made from gifts that God gave first to us: grain and grapes, the fruit of the
earth. God has no need of anything further. Yet God accepts the offering we bring—bread and wine, “the work of human hands”—
and transforms our offering into the gift of his very presence.
After the meal, Jesus directs himself to Simon Peter. The dialogue with Simon Peter is a reversal of Peter's three denials. Peter is
forgiven. Having been restored to friendship with Jesus, Simon Peter is sent on a mission. “Feed my lambs . . . Tend my sheep . . . Feed
my sheep.” These commands indicate that Peter is to be as Jesus, even unto sacrificing for the flock. As Jesus has fed Peter in this meal
and as Jesus feeds us in the Eucharist, so he also sends us to follow him, asking that we offer our lives in service and sacrifice.

La semana pasada escuchamos que Jesùs se les apareciò a los discìpulos reunidos en un cuarto cerrado, probablemente en Jerusalèn.
En el Evangelio de hoy, los discìpulos ya no estàn en Jerusalèn, estàn en Galilea, regresando a su trabajo de Pescadores. Simòn
Pedro todavia sigue presentado su papel de lìder. Cuando el anuncia que se va de pesca los otros discìpulos lo siguen. Ellos pasaron
la noche pescando sin tener ningun resultado.
Jesùs les llama desde la orilla, pero los discìpulos no lo reconocieron inmediatamente. Aùn asi, siguen las intrucciones de un
desconocido y recogen una gran cantidad de peces. Es en este punto es que el “discìpulo que Jesùs amaba” se da cuenta de que Jesùs

que traemos- pan y vino, “trabajo de las manos del hombre-y transforma nuestra ofrenda en el don de su presencia verdadera.
Despuès de la comida, Jesùs se dirige a Simòn Pedro. El diàlogo con Simòn Pedro es una riversa a las tres negaciones de pedro.
Pedro es perdonado. Restaurada su amistad con Jesùs Simon Pedro es enviado a una misiòn. “Apacienta mis corderos . . . Pastorea
mis ovejas . . . Apacienta mis ovejas.” Estos mandos indican que Pedro tiene que ser como Jesùs hasta sacrificarse por el rebaño.
Como Jesùs alimento a Pedro en esta comida y como Jesùs nos alimenta en la Eucarista, asi tambièn El nos envìa a seguirle, pidièndole
que ofrezcamos nuestras vidas al servicio y sacrificio.

Na semana passada ouvimos que Jesus apareceu aos discípulos em uma sala fechada, provavelmente em Jerusalém. No
Evangelho de hoje, os discípulos não estão mais em Jerusalém, estão, em Galiléia, voltando aos seus trabalhos de pescadores. Simão
Pedro continua a ser apresentado no papel de líder: Quando ele anuncia que está indo pescar, os demais discípulos o seguem. Eles

Safe Environment Reminders: Background Checks
Through the Creating and Maintaining Safe Environment
Policy, the Archdiocese of Miami is keeping the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops’ promise to protect children.
One way to control access to children is the background check
(fingerprinting). All employees, whether they work with minors
or not, and all volunteers working with minors or vulnerable
adults are to successfully pass a background check. Additionally,
this is in compliance with the Jessica Lunsford Act
of Florida State law. Recently the Archdiocese changed the
company used to produce the background checks to Fieldprint.
The change facilitated more locations throughout the
three-county archdiocese, making the process more convenient
for participants. Additionally the change will be more cost
efficient for the archdiocese. To register for fingerprints you
must first contact your parish or school for the registration
code and then log into www.fieldprintflorida.com to complete
the process and schedule your appointment.

April 21st addition of the Florida Catholic.

Pro-Life Groups Slam Morning After Pill Ruling:
Girls Will be Exploited

Pro-life groups are not happy with today’s decision by a federal
judge to allow sales of the morning after pill to teenagers, including
girls of any age.
Anna Higgins, J.D., director of the Center for Human Dignity at
the Family Research Council, expressed serious concerns regarding a
federal judge’s order today that the “morning-after” pill be available
to girls of all ages without a prescription.
This ruling places the health of young girls at risk. Making Plan
B available for girls under the age of 17 without a prescription flies
in the face of medical information and sound judgment. I am very
troubled that the court has not fully taken into account the concerns
expressed by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and many public
health advocates that there is not enough data on the health effects of
Plan B on young girls,” she said.
“According to the new numbers released by the Centers for
Disease Control, there were 19,700,000 new sexually transmitted
infections reported in 2008 – the last year for which numbers are
available. Based on the CDC’s estimates, that brings the total number
of STIs in the U.S. to just over 110 million. Most of the new cases
crop up in young men and women aged 15-25. Making Plan B available
over-the-counter for any age will put many of these young girls
at further risk because it circumvents necessary medical screening for
sexually active girls,” she told LifeNews.
“There is a real danger that Plan B may be given to young girls,
under coercion or without their consent. The involvement of parents
and medical professionals act as a safeguard for these young girls.
However, today’s ruling removes these commonsense protections,”
concluded Higgins.
Americans United for Life president Charmaine Yoest noted
that the business interests of Big Abortion were again at play as news
broke of a federal judge allowing the so-called “morning after” pill to
be sold to girls 16 and younger over the counter.
“This decision allows the abortion industry to gamble with
young girls’ health in distributing a life-ending drug, with no real
understanding of the long-term implications on their bodies,” said
Dr. Yoest. “Equally troubling, this allows young girls pressured into
sex or even abused by adults to be manipulated into taking pills that
cover up what is a criminal act.”
“Young girls need medical supervision in taking such a potent
and potentially life-ending drug,” said Dr. Yoest. “The implications
for informed consent — and the long-term health impact on women
of all ages — are deeply troubling.”
The pro-life women’s group Susan B. Anthony List also blasted
the decision and the abortion lobby for seeking to expand access to
these drugs without regard to the safety of young girls.
“Teen girls need parents, not unfettered access to abortioninducing
drugs,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan
B. Anthony List. “Judge Korman’s decision is reckless and denies
girls the protection that comes along with the involvement of parents
and doctors.
“In 2011, President Obama and HHS Secretary Sebelius agreed
that requiring a prescription for potentially dangerous drugs is common
sense. We should not be making it easier for young girls to access
abortifacient drugs that end life at an unknown consequence to
the young girl herself. Abortion extremists like Planned Parenthood
and the Center for Reproductive Rights who praised today’s ruling
show a complete lack of concern for the health of teens and the rights
of parents,” she told LifeNews.
But the Planned Parenthood abortion business is happy with the
decision. Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood, called
the ruling as “a significant and long-overdue step forward for
women’s health that will benefit women of all ages.”
“When a woman fears she might become pregnant after her
contraceptive has failed or she has had unprotected sex, she needs
fast access to emergency contraception, not delays at the pharmacy
counter,” Richads said in a statement. “Lifting these restrictions will
allow emergency contraception to be stocked on store shelves, making
it more accessible to everyone.”
One example that concerns pro-life advocates came when a
teacher bought the drug for a student. This story tells about a high
school math teacher who went to a Planned Parenthood and bought
Plan B for a student not old enough to buy it herself.
Tracy Lee Steinberg, a 32-year-old assistant basketball coach
and math teacher at Lyndon B. Johnson High School in Austin has
resigned after she said she gave a 16-year-old female student two
morning-after pills, or Plan B, when the student showed up in class
crying in January after having unprotected sex.

monthly for parents and godparents, as needed.

Que simboliza o mar, senão o mundo atual,
batido pelas ondas tumultuosas das nossas
ocupações e pelos turbilhões de uma vida caduca?
E o que representa a margem firme, senão a
perpetuidade do descanso eterno? Portanto, os
discípulos afadigam-se no lago porque ainda estão
presos nas ondas da vida mortal, mas o nosso
Redentor, depois da Sua ressurreição, fica na
margem, uma vez que já ultrapassou a condição
da fragilidade da carne. É como se Ele tivesse
querido servir-Se dessas coisas para falar aos Seus
discípulos do mistério da Sua ressurreição,
dizendo-lhes: “Já não vos apareço no mar
(Mt 14,25), porque já não estou entre vós no meio
da agitação das ondas.”
Foi no mesmo sentido que, em outro lugar,
disse a esses mesmos discípulos após a
ressurreição: “Disse-vos essas coisas quando
ainda estava convosco” (Lc 24,44). Não lhes disse
isto por já não estar com eles – pois o Seu corpo
estava presente e aparecia-lhes −, mas [...] porque
a Sua carne imortal Se distanciava muito dos seus
corpos mortais: Ele dizia que já não estava com
eles e contudo estava no meio deles. Na passagem
que lemos hoje, diz-lhes a mesma coisa pela
localização do Seu corpo: enquanto os discípulos
ainda navegam, doravante Ele está firme na
margem.

A través de su política de Establecer y Mantener un
Ambiente Seguro, la Arquidiócesis de Miami mantiene
la promesa del Obispo de proteger a los niños. Uno de
los elementos de la política es controlar quién tiene acceso
a los niños. Es una responsabilidad que se toma con
seriedad debido a que tiene que ver directamente con la
protección de los niños que se colocan a nuestro cuidado,
ya sea en las escuelas, parroquias o instalaciones
para el cuidado de la salud. Con este fin, todos los empleados
deben pasar con éxito una verificación de antecedentes,
estar entrenados en Virtus, y firmar una Promesa
para Promover un Ambiente Seguro. De la misma
manera, todos los voluntarios que trabajen con menores
o adultos vulnerables deben pasar con éxito una verificación
de antecedentes, estar entrenados en Virtus, y firmar
una Promesa para Promover un Ambiente Seguro.
Por supuesto, esto incluye a los acompañantes, aun si
son cónyuges de un empleado. No importa si es una persona
que participa en cada salida, o alguien que pase una
tarde con los niños, quizás el prom o baile de fin de curso.
Todo el que tenga acceso a los niños, deberá cumplir
con esto. No se trata de la confianza del acompañante,
sino de la protección de los niños. Cuando se trata de
proteger a los niños, no sólo es importante ser confiable,
sino también parecer confiable. De otra manera, se abriría
la puerta a los pederastas, en quienes no se puede confiar
cuando hay niños.

EFLEXIONEMOS SOBRE LA
PALABRA ALABRA DE DIOS IOS
Cuando comparamos a los apóstoles antes y después
de la muerte de Jesús podemos ver que no sólo le ocurrió
algo especial a Jesús en su resurrección, sino que un
cambio maravilloso se dio también en los apóstoles.
Hasta la muerte de Jesús los apóstoles no estaban muy
bien parados que digamos, pues a la hora de la verdad lo
que hicieron fue correr.
Pero después que el Señor resucitó y se les apareció
tenemos un cuadro bien distinto. En los Hechos de los
Apóstoles Lucas nos da la descripción más detallada de
lo que pasó después de que el Espíritu Santo descendiera
sobre esta pequeña comunidad orante.
El don más obvio fue el valor (coraje), una palabra
que tiene la misma raíz latina que “corazón”. Se les concedió
un corazón nuevo. El Espíritu Santo sopló una
vida nueva en ellos y les dio un corazón apasionado por
el amor de Cristo, inflamado para predicar el evangelio.
Y así fueron al templo, el centro de su ciudad, y allí predicaron
y enseñaron acerca de Jesús dando testimonio de
él como el Mesías, el Justo, el Autor de la Vida.
Ellos realizaron “muchos signos y prod gios” (Hechos
5:12), curando a los enfermos y expulsaban a los espíritus
inmundos. Allí fueron arrestados, llevados a prisión
y azotados; mas, una vez que los soltaron, regresaron al
templo para volver a hacer lo mismo y ser arrestados de
nuevo. Durante todo eso se mantenían alegres.
Hay una frase que se recuerda del filósofo Friedrich
Nietzsche: “Creeré en el Redentor cuando los cristianos se
vean un poco más redimidos”. Y a ti, ¿se te ve redimido?
