Corner
Sixth Sunday of Easter
This portion of John's Gospel comes near the end of the first of four chapters that make
up Jesus' long farewell discourse at the Last Supper. This section of chapter 14 actually sums
up the themes of the opening of the discourse: the Christian's life is not shaped by Jesus' absence
but by God's abiding presence; God's presence overcomes anxiety about God's absence;
and the present holds in it the seeds of a fresh future shaped by love, not fear.
These verses also contain a glimpse of some of the other themes of the farewell discourse: Jesus' relationship with
the Father and the disciples' relationship to Jesus connect the disciples to the Father as well. Jesus promises to send an
Advocate or intercessor who will remind the disciples of everything that Jesus taught them and bring them peace.
Jesus is preparing his disciples in advance for his absence so that they will continue to believe in him and not feel all
alone after his return to the Father. After the initial excitement of his Easter appearances, Jesus will remain with his followers
in a very different way throughout the centuries.
As our celebration of the Easter season is coming to an end, the liturgy reminds us that Jesus remains with us through
the Holy Spirit, who teaches us everything we need to know, reminds us of all that Jesus taught, and brings us peace.

Sexto Domingo de Pascua
Esta parte del Evangelio de Juan se encuentra al último de los cuatro capítulos que habla del discurso de la despedida
de Jesús durante la Última Cena. Realmente este recapitula los temas del inicio del discurso: la vida cristiana no está formada
por la ausencia de Jesús pero por su presencia continua; la presencia de Dios supera la ansiedad debido a Su ausencia
y el presente tiempo contiene las semillas de un nuevo futuro plasmado por amor y no temor.
Estos versos también nos da un vistazo de otros temas del discurso de despedida: la relación de Jesús con su Padre y
la relación de los discípulos a Jesús que conecta los discípulos al Padre. Jesús promete enviar un Abogado intercesor que
los recordará a los discípulos todo que Jesús les enseño e esto les dará paz.

REFLECTING EFLECTING ON GOD OD’S OD WORD ORD
Forming a community is never easy. This is true
whether the community is made up of family members,
citizens, or believers. Diversity can both enrich and
divide. Jewish Christians were soon joined by Gentile
believers. The church in Jerusalem was joined by the
church in Antioch. While the Gentile Christians questioned
whether they had to accept all the Jewish traditions
and customs, Jewish Christians feared they would
lose what had given them their identity.
Today’s reading from Acts witnesses to the role of
the Holy Spirit in helping to navigate a way through
these sensitive issues. The leaders of the church in Jerusalem
send a letter to the church in Antioch, proclaiming
that the decision they reached came not just from human
wisdom, but from working with the Holy Spirit.
Such testimony to the role of the Holy Spirit is also
found in the Gospel of John. At the Last Supper, Jesus
tells his disciples that the Holy Spirit will come from the
Father and “teach you everything and remind you of all
that I told you” (John 14:26). Because of this promise,
we can have confidence that God will not abandon us.
Indeed, the Trinity comes to dwell with those faithful to
Jesus’ word.
When we gather to celebrate the Eucharist, we call
on the Holy Spirit both to open our minds to Jesus’ word
and to transform bread and wine so that we become
more fully the body of Christ and the living temple of
the Holy Spirit in the world.

Five Reasons Why the Abortion Industry
is Pushing RU 486 Harder –Part II

When RU-486, the abortion pill, was approved for sale in America
in September of 2000, this two-drug chemical abortion technique
didn’t simply appear out of the blue. It was the result of the years of
planning, research, and market analysis by the abortion industry, the
culmination of a long term strategy put in place decades earlier. Today,
that strategy is playing out in clinics all across America and
around the world.
So what was it the abortion industry saw? And what did they hope
to accomplish by adding chemical abortifacients to their already
deadly arsenal? Here are five reasons behind the abortion industry’s
push of the abortion pill and an indication of how far they’ve gotten
in fulfilling their awful aims:
Reason 4: Increase Income
For all the talk about “choice” and women’s health care, never forget
that those who are peddling these abortion pills are operating a business.
It is a fact that explains why a business that was losing customers was
anxious to come up with a new product; it explains why they have promoted
a different protocol than the one approved by the FDA; and it
explains why they are pushing web-cam abortions.
After abortions peaked in the U.S. in 1990 with 1.6 million, the
number has dropped as low as 1.2 million. Abortion rates among
younger customers had been in decline for some time and women
were being more and more turned off by surgical abortion. Prices for
abortions had not kept up with inflation and more and more doctors
were getting out of the business.
A “new and improved” product offered the industry a chance to
attract new customers or win back older ones (somewhere around
45% of all abortions are repeat abortions) who were intimidated by
the risks and indignities of surgical abortion or upset about aborting
unborn babies medical technology was clearly showing them to be
both human and alive.
The FDA approved protocol called for women no more than 49
days past their last menstrual period to receive three pills of RU-486
after being screened and being counseled about the process (which
they take there in the doctor’s office) which is to shut down the
baby’s support system and cause the child’s demise. Under the protocol,
the woman is to return to the doctor two days later to receive two
pills of misoprostol, taken by mouth, to stimulate powerful uterine
contractions to expel the tiny corpse. She is to return on day 14 to
confirm whether or not her abortion is complete.
It was under this protocol that the FDA declared the drug “safe”
and “effective.”
There were several things the industry did not like about this protocol,
however, and it was arguing for alternate protocols even before
the FDA gave final marketing approval.
RU-486 (or mifepristone) is a complex drug to manufacture and is
imported from China, so it is expensive, about $90 a pill. With three
of those pills running $270, the cost of three office visits, the personnel
to screen and counsel the patients, this left a slim profit margin, if
any. And if priced significantly higher than the surgical method, they
might have difficulty selling the new product.
In the name of increasing effectiveness and decreasing side effects,
the industry offered several modifications to the protocol,
modifications dubiously offering improvements in either safety or
effectiveness, but clearly increasing the abortionist’s profit margin
and decreasing requirements for office time, space, or personnel.
The newly promoted protocol reduced the number of expensive
mifepristone pills from three to one, but doubled the dose of the misoprostol,
which ran only a dollar or so a pill. The National Abortion
Federation (NAF) protocol allowed the woman to take the prostaglandin
(misoprostol) at home, rather than returning to the office,
eliminating at least one office visit. That industry protocol also extended
the cutoff date by two weeks, from 49 days LMP to 63 days
LMP, thereby opening the doors to a whole new group of customers.
Reports indicate that many are performed even past this limit.
Web-cam abortions present an even greater potential for revenues.
Rather than wasting time and gas traveling between multiple small
clinic offices, an abortionist can sit at a computer at a central administrative
office and, with the click of a mouse, dispense pills to different
women in dozens of remote location around the state. Any place
with an Internet connection can be set up as an abortion clinic.
As a consequence of such changes, chemical abortions now account
for 199,000 abortions a year, or at least 16.4% of all abortions
performed in the U.S. (as of 2008). How many of these women
would have gotten surgical abortions had chemical ones not been
available is unknown, but chemical abortion has certainly expanded
the reach of the industry into whole new communities.

Cristo, que “tinha entregado o espírito” na Cruz, (Jo

vez ressuscitado, vai ter com os Apóstolos para “soprar

alegria os presentes: “a sua tristeza converte-se em

da Sua paixão. E sobretudo verifica-se o anúncio principal
do discurso de despedida: Cristo ressuscitado, como que
dando início a uma nova criação, “traz” aos Apóstolos o

Espírito como que através das feridas da Sua crucifixão:

Estabelece-se assim uma íntima ligação entre o envio
do Filho e o do Espírito Santo. Não existe envio do
Espírito Santo (depois do pedaco original) sem a Cruz e a
Ressurreição: “Se eu não for, não virá a vós o
Consolador” (Jo 16, 7). Estabelece-se também uma íntima
ligação entre a missão do Espírito Santo e a missão do
Filho na Redenção. Esta missão do Filho, num certo
sentido, tem o seu “cumprimento” na Redenção. A missão
do Espírito Santo “vai haurir” algo da Redenção: “Ele
receberá do que é Meu para vô-lo anunciar” (Jo 16, 15). A
Redenção é totalmente operada pelo Filho, como Ungido
que veio e agiu com o poder do Espírito Santo, oferecendo-

Formar comunidad nunca es fácil, ya esté la comunidad
compuesta de familiares, ciudadanos o creyentes. La
diversidad puede enriquecer o dividir. A los cristianos
judíos pronto se les unieron los creyentes convertidos
del paganismo. A la Iglesia de Jerusalén se le unió la
Iglesia de Antioquía. Mientras que los cristianos de origen
pagano preguntaban si tenían que aceptar todas las
tradiciones y costumbres judías, los cristianos judíos
temían perder lo que les había dado su identidad.
Las lecturas de hoy de los Hechos da testimonio del
papel que tuvo el Espíritu Santo para ayudar a navegar a
través de todos esos delicados asuntos. Los líderes de la
Iglesia en Jerusalén le envían una carta a la Iglesia de
Antioquía diciendo que la decisión a la que ellos llegaron
no vino de una sabiduría meramente humana, sino
de trabajar guiados por el Espíritu Santo.
Tal testimonio sobre el papel del Espíritu Santo también
se encuentra en el Evangelio de Juan. En la Última
Cena Jesús le dice a sus discípulos que el Padre les
enviará el Espíritu Santo, que “hará que recuerden lo que
yo les he enseñado y le explicará todo” (Juan 14, 26).
Por esta promesa podemos nosotros tener la confianza
de que Dios no nos abandonará. En efecto, la Santísima
Trinidad habita en aquellos que son fieles a las palabras
de Jesús.
Cuando nos reunimos para celebrar la Eucaristía pedimos
al Espíritu Santo que abra nuestra mente a las palabras
de Jesús, y que transforme el pan y el vino a fin de
que lleguemos a ser con mayor autenticidad el cuerpo de
Cristo y el templo vivo del Espíritu Santo en el mundo.
