MAITLAND.
'HERE are two distinct settlements
at Maitland, called " The
Maitlands," connected by a
branch railway, or tram, with Morpeth.
East Maitland is i8 miles by rail from
Newcastle, and West Maitland two
miles further on. They are situated in
the centre of the finest agricultural land
in the State; they are built upon fertile
flats, and therefore subject to inundation
during floods.
The history of "The Maitlands"
illustrates the stupendous blunders made
by the early administra
tors. Dr. Lang writes: —
One of the most important
functions of a colonial Government
is the selection of proper
sites for fiuure towns. Now,
in the case of a navigable
river, leading up towards its
source through a rich and
extensive agricultural cou ntr\,
it would have suggested itself
to any person possesed of the
smallest modicum of common
sense, that a town would be
urgently required at the head
of navigation. . . There
was a plateau on its right
bank, beautifully situated, of
sufficient e.vtent for a large
town, and high above the
reach of all inundations
This elevated land was recklessly granted awav
by Sir Thomas Brisbane, to E. Close, Esq , an ex-lieutenant of the navv.
Mr. Close was quite willing to surrender his grant to the (Government for
an equal area to be selected by him in another part. Governor Darling
kept haggling with that gentleman till the proposed arrangement was
broken oft, neglectini; to h.x another site for the town, till the patience of

the people was exhausted. Meanwhile, first one and then another
pitched his tent and erected buildings at all hazards on the flooded land,
which wascalled "The Swamp " Thisoccurred during General Darling's
early administration —1826-1828. Such was the origin of the town of
Maitland. The Government of the day could not pretend ignorance as to
the nature of the floods in the Hunter. There had been one in the year
1820, which had reached the eaves of the only house 1 Molly Morgan's, a
widow), then on " The Swamp, " which rose 37 feet above high water
mark in the river.
