TAMWORTH.<br />

<strong>Tamworth</strong> is the largest town on the Great Northern<br />

Railway Line north of .Maitland. It is 282 miles from<br />

Sydney by rail and 287 miles by road. The great northern<br />

highway passes through the business portion of the town.<br />

The population of the town is approximately 10,000 and<br />

of the district 25,000.<br />

It is situated on the Peel River, the banks of which are<br />

lined with weeping willows, and its beautiful public parks<br />

and avenues of street trees and the general cleanliness and<br />

brightness of the town are not easily forgotten by visitors.<br />

<strong>Tamworth</strong> is known as "The Queen <strong>City</strong> of the North"<br />

and with the great opjiortunities it offers the commercial<br />

man, it has justly earned that title. Strangers who visit<br />

<strong>Tamworth</strong> cannot fail to gather an impression of life,<br />

activity and commercial importance which increases upon<br />

sive agricultural and pastoral land of which it forms the<br />

centre. Its up-to-date and substantial buildings are far ahead<br />

of any other town in the north of New South Wales.<br />

The immense variety of its primary industries is one of<br />

the many reasons for its prosperity, amongst which are<br />

wool, wheat, barley, millet, lucerne, tobacco, dairying", pig<br />

farming, fruits, vegetables and stock raising. A great belt<br />

of limestone traverses the <strong>Tamworth</strong> district and from cxtcii.sive<br />

quarries enormous quantities of limestone are obtained<br />

and supplied to other parts of the State, particularly<br />

<strong>Newcastle</strong>. Marble of great beauty is obtainable in the<br />

<strong>Tamworth</strong> district.<br />

<strong>Tamworth</strong> was the first town in Australia to be lighted<br />

by electricity—the service commenced in 1888, and its electricity<br />

undertaking is one of the largest in country districts<br />

of N.S.W. The supply mains extend in one direction a<br />

distance of 28 miles through villages and farms lighted by<br />

electricity, to the Municipality of Manilla, 11 miles in another<br />

direction, lighting more villages and farms, and is now being<br />

extended to Werris Creek in the south, a distance of about<br />

30 miles. The price of electricity for lighting is 6d. per<br />

unit and for domestic power lid. per unit, while for factories<br />

it is on a sliding scale, to as low as nine-tenths of one<br />

penny per unit.<br />

The town has an excellent water supply and water is<br />

sold at :/- per thousand gallons. It has also a modern<br />

sewerage system.<br />

Amongst the town industries are a co-operative butter<br />

factory, freezing and ice works, flour mill, soap works,<br />

broom factory, saw mills, brick works and cordial factories.<br />

<strong>Tamworth</strong> is recognised as the stock market north of<br />

^Maitland and holds regular weekly sales of stock at the<br />

Beautifully situated on the banks of the McDonald River,<br />

at the foot of the iMoombi Range, is the township of <strong>Bendemeer</strong>,<br />

with a population of 900.<br />

The main Northern Road passes through this township,<br />

and as excellent camping grounds for motorists are available<br />

on the river bank, <strong>Bendemeer</strong> is naturally coming to the fore<br />

as a tourist resort. The climate is ideal.<br />

Good accommodation is obtainable at the hotel, and visitors<br />

may delight in swimming, shooting and trout fishing.<br />

Tennis courts are also open for the use of visitors.<br />

From <strong>Tamworth</strong> the distance by road is 26 miles, from<br />

Uralla 30 miles, <strong>Walcha</strong> 32 miles, and Armidale 44 miles.<br />

WALCHA ROAD.<br />

<strong>Walcha</strong> Road, on the main Northern Railway Line, 32,<br />

miles from Sydney, is the railway station at which passenger^<br />

alight for the town of <strong>Walcha</strong>, 12 miles away, to whicl<br />

they are conveyed by motor cars.<br />

WALCHA.<br />

<strong>Walcha</strong>, the centre of a rich grazing district, is situated<br />

on the .Apsley River.<br />

From <strong>Tamworth</strong> (via <strong>Bendemeer</strong>) the distance by road is<br />

58 miles, while Uralla, on the north, is 26 miles away, and<br />

Armidale 40 miles.<br />

When travelling by rail, visitors leave the train at <strong>Walcha</strong><br />

Road, which is 321 miles from Sydney, and are then conveyed<br />

by motor cars over goods roads to V\'alcha, a distance<br />

of 12 miles. The rail fares from Sydney are: rst class<br />

£2/14/7 and 2nd class £1/17/2. From <strong>Newcastle</strong> the distance<br />

is 217 miles, the fares being £2/1/11 for ist class and £1/8/3<br />

for 2nd class. The car fare from <strong>Walcha</strong> is 5/-.<br />

A car service has been inaugurated between <strong>Walcha</strong>, Uralla<br />

and Armidale.<br />

On account of its high altitude (3,450 feet), <strong>Walcha</strong> has<br />

an excellent bracing climate, and is gaining favour as a<br />

tourist and health resort.<br />

Good accommodation is obtainable at the hotels, aud visitors<br />

should not i)ass on without motoring to the Apsley Falls<br />

(12 miles distant), also the Tia Falls and Yarrowitch Falls,<br />

l«>th of which arc 24 and 35 miles rcsjiectively from the<br />

town.<br />

Anglers are assured that good trout may lie caught in the<br />

Macdonald and Cobrabaldi ki\ers.<br />

<strong>Walcha</strong> is lighted hy electricity, and has all the shopping<br />

facilities of a modern town.<br />

In addition to cattle raising and wool growing, for which<br />

the district is noted, oaten and wheaten hay, maize and<br />

potatoes are grown extensively. A little mining is carried<br />

(in in the district.<br />

The po]>ulation of the town is 1,750, and district 4,500.<br />
