Thumbs Up... Thumbs Down...
It was a good week for both
Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder and former
State Sen. Jeff Smith. Kinder took
a few minutes this week to visit
with Smith as he serves time at a
Kentucky federal prison. Thumbs
admires a good friend.
And speaking of good friends,
while Tuesday was a bad day for
Scott Faughn, who locked his
keys in the car and ran out of gas, Thumbs’ good friend Kyle Vancil
showed up on nearly a moment’s notice with both an extra set of keys,
a tank of gas and a Snickers bar.
It was a good week for our 1,700th Facebook friend Brian Osborne.
It was a good week for fast-food connissuers in Poplar Bluff. With
Fazoli’s now open for business, Thumbs is certainly excited about
partaking in the feast. Real Italian, real fast sounds really good to us!
It was a bad week for the Gulf of Mexico. With oil still pouring
out, beach goers are now seeing tar balls forming where they should
be seeing white sandy dunes. This is truely an ecological tragedy.
It was a good week for financial markets and stockholders. According
to reports, stocks climbed in April and Fed Chairman Ben
Bernanke made encouraging remarks about the economy.
It was a bad week for the
Gores. Al and Tipper Gore recently
announced their plans to
divorce, and Wednesday several
news outlets reported that their eldest
daughter Kerenna is separating
from her husband of 12 years, too.
Thumbs up to the Bread Company
in Poplar Bluff. Thumbs
thanks you for being such a vital
part of the 573 community, especially when enormous chocolate
brownies are on the house on particularly lousy days. We appreciate you
and everything you do.
It was a good week for the cast and crew of the Stage Company’s production
of Cabaret. We admire the work you’re doing and are proud to be
part of a community where a group isn’t ashamed to push the envelop in a
way that allows folks to showcase their talents and raise awareness at the
same time. Good luck with your opening show!
It was a good week for Jessica Hicks. Mike had great things to say
about you when we chatted with him. See the story on Page 4.
And finally, it was a good week for everyone who attended and participated
in Bonestock 6. Our friends Powder Mill rocked their set and,
over all, a great time was had by all. Thumbs is happy to see a group of
folks get together and rock out.
‘Cabaret’ curtain rises Friday
Joe Clark and Laura Isaacs
SEMO TIMES
The Stage Company heats up an
already near-sweltering June with their
latest production, ‘Cabaret.’ The show
is set to open Friday night, June 11, at
7:30 p.m. at the Rodger’s Theatre in
downtown Poplar Bluff.
The play was written by Joe Masteroff
with music by John Kander and
lyrics by Fred Ebb, and revolves around
political and social events taking place
in 1931 Germany before the outbreak of
World War II. Set at a time when Nazis
are rising to power, it converges on
nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Club. The
play revolves around the young-butwordly
cabaret performer Sally Bowles
page 4
(portrayed by Megan Keathley) and
her relationship with Cliff Bradshaw
(portrayed by newcomer Eric Starbes),
a young writer. Other events unfold, and
the Kit Kat Club prevails as a strong
metaphor for the national state of affairs
in Germany.
“The message of the show asks how
did the good people of Germany let this
evil arise? What were they doing and
thinking while this was coming to the
surface in their country? Cabaret is the
story of people doing what we do today,
making a living, people falling in love,
and basically living life for themselves
– preoccupied with their own lives,”
After 12 years of nearly-perfect law
practice in Poplar Bluff, Mike
Brookreson is stepping down amid a
flurry of controversy. But he’s doing so on
his own terms.
“I was the architect
of my own
early retirement,”
Brookreson said
from a table at a
local watering hole
Monday afternoon.
And with his trademark eloquent
speech, boyish charm, easy-going smile
and cowboy boots, Brookreson seemed
anything but uncomfortable discussing his
decision.
The cataclysmic chain of events leading
to Brookreson’s decision to step down
began nearly six months ago. According
to reports, the Office of Chief Disciplinary
Counsel began investigating Brookreson
in early 2010 after a trust account
overdraft notification. The OCDC, an
agency of the Missouri Supreme Court,
is responsible for examining allegations
of misconduct among the state’s lawyers
and, according to the organization’s
website, prosecuting cases in which Missouri
attorneys’ conduct “poses a threat to
the public or to the integrity of the legal
profession.”
According to reports, Brookreson’s
staff unknowingly broke recently-passed
regulations regarding how client trust ac-
counts are appropriated
and how the
funds were handled.
He said he “didn’t
know the law until
I was stung by it.”
The OCDC report
was compiled by Carl Schaeperkoetter,
who Brookreson has never met or talked
“My issue comes from my failure to
supervise staff,” Brookreson said. “And
for that, I was given a kick in the teeth
when most people in the legal community
felt I deserved a slap on the wrist.”
And while no formal charges were
filed against Brookreson, he chose to step
down amid the violations and accusations
rather than negotiate the terms of
disciplinary actions recommended by the
Counsel. He said the recommended
Keathley said.
“When things get tough we focus on ourselves and
taking care of our loved ones,” Keathley said.
Keathley, a stage veteran, said this play is not
what most people will expect. Though Cabaret was
made into a film starring Liza Minelli in 1972, this
production contains many adult themes and can be
considered rather controversial.
“The play is not suitable for children and may
offend some people but it is somewhat of a love story
and has its funny moments,” Kit Kat dance Alyssa
McClure said. “I didn’t know what the costumes
consisted of, or rather what they didn’t consist of.”
Ron Gilliland directed this production. Tosha
Cooksey is the assistant director and plays Rosie.
Mike Tinsley is the emcee; Guy McAndrew portrays
Ernst Ludwig and serves as makeup artist; and Fraulein
actions “weren’t reeducation, but were
punitive in nature.”
He describes the investigation and its
backlash as a “lesson in humility.”
According to Brookreson, until recently
lawyers were left to police themselves,
their financial matters and how
client trust account funds are managed.
Brookreson said he was unaware of the
freshly-passed regulations involving
OCDC overdraft notifications because
he has been away from his practice taking
care of his elderly parents.
His mother is currently undergoing
radiation treatment for breast cancer and
his father is running on time borrowed
from a transplanted heart. Before his
mother was diagnosed with cancer, she
was his father’s sole caretaker. Now,
as they both face grave health issues,
Brookreson had to put his life on hold
to care for them and had spent that past
few months playing catch-up with his
practice.
Though he holds himself accountable
for his staff’s actions, Brookreson feels
the OCDC has made an example of his
situation.
“In every situation, there’s going to
be someone made an example of,” he
said. “Especially if you have blond hair
and your voice booms.”
Brookreson said he’s seen a rapid
diminution in the number of solo law
practitioners in recent years because
of recent legislation and taxing regulations.
He believes lawyers practicing in
smaller firms are being phased out, and
A Commentary...
Local flavor is mighty good
You just never know what
goes on until you get out. Sometimes
the flavor of being a local
can be experienced
only when
you say goodbye
to the couch and
TV and go experience
things for
real. Not to take
anything away
from great entertainment
on the
tube but getting
out and sharing an experience
is so much better. Take
for example the Relay for Life
this past weekend at TRCC, now
there’s a whole bunch of people
who really care getting together
and having a great time for an
excellent cause. This year’s event
was coordinated by Michelle
Jackson and Christy Miller and
had entertainment all night long
including games, dancing, an
auction, a DJ, and tributes to
those who have won and lost the
battle with cancer. Hundreds
in our community came out to
share in the experience including
Tyler Profilet who was the emcee
for the entire event which was
hosted free for the public from
6pm Friday to 6am Saturday
While we’re on the subject of
getting out at no charge, Southern
Bank held their Movie In
This time it
was The Goonies, a
family favorite. The
weather was perfect
and they show the
movie at no charge.
Ruth, Ruth, Baby
Ruth !!!! They even
began the show with
a Truffle Shuffle
the crew at Southern Bank for
bringing quality entertainment
to us all. They even began the
June 25 th at the Wine Rack
is the band Strange Brew, an
eclectic blend of musical energy
with an ambiance that always
leaves me and others asking for
more. Come out and have a
Gulf oil catastrophe: Who’s to blame?
Finally, the buck stops with Obama
For fully eighteen months, every
time something has gone right in
America it is the glorious dark
angel’s doing. All hail Emperor
Obama. Thank the lord that after
totally reclamating the Chicago
ghettos to the wonderous garden
of eden they are today he
graced the rest of this “mean
racist” nation by becoming
president, and the skies parted
the sun rained down and everything
good in America is due to
his works.
When his reign began, everything
bad in our nation was
exclusively property of Bush/
Cheney Inc. If the anointed
one stubbed his toe it was and
evil plot by W. However, for
the first time a problem, in this
case the oil leaking into the
Gulf, cannot be blamed on Bush.
No amount of eloquent speech or
mainstream media bias can mask
the incompetent response of the
Obama administration.
The buck has finally stopped,
and it has stopped at the bottom of
the Gulf of Mexico.
Frank McCallister,
Dexter
The chickens have finally come hoome to roost
It took seven years of the Bush
administration’s de-regulating the
banking industry for America’s financial
system to be brought to the
brink of collapse. Their catering to
special Wall Street interest brought
us to a near depression level catastrophe
that has adversely affected
the lives of millions of Americans.
Now we are seeing what years of
deregulation have brought to the
oil industry.
While 401ks can be refunded
and the DOW ‘s value can climb
back to 10,000 the Bush administration’s
oil men regulating oil
men strategy has unleashed an ecological
Chernobyl on the Gulf of
Mexico that no amount of money
and time will be able to undo.
President Obama hasn’t been in
office long enough to stem the tide
of “drill-baby-drill” environmental
policy, and anyone that attempts
to blame this on President Obama
would be as wrong as those who
attempted to blame George W.
Bush for 9/11.
Every week, our roving food critics, “Dick and Jane,” will visit SEMO restaurants and nightspots
and report their findings back to you. Dick and Jane will rate each restaurant in the following
categories: atmosphere, service, value, entree, and dessert. One star will be terrible. Five stars
will be first-rate. The average of the five will give the restaurant its overall SEMO Dining rating.
The snack bar at Bluff Lanes boasts a variety of satisying snacks.
Bluff Lanes is a hidden slice of burger heaven
Dick and Jane recently found
their tummies rumbling after a few
heated rounds of bowling at Bluff
Lanes, so they decided to check
out the snack bar. And what they
found waiting for them was like
discovering a hidden treasure trove
of cheeseburger delights.
With the perfect balance of beef,
cheese and buns, the burgers at the
Bluff Lines concession bar rivaled
those of any sit-down restaurant
and surely was a strike for Dick
and Jane’s appetites.
While the atmosphere and ambiance
at the bowling alley isn’t quite
up to par with other food venues in
town, the good food and friendly
service made up for it. Food was
served promptly and tasted fresh.
Review
ABC gets fresh with ‘Freshman’
The network’s description: “Ever wondered
what goes on behind closed doors in
D.C.? Get a closer look at the private lives
of public people in this uncensored new
comedy. When three young, newly-elected
members of Congress decide to share a
house together, we’ll see both their public
maneuvering and their behind-the-scenes
personal relationships. Meet Cameron,
Vince and Jane, three freshman Representatives
who decide to pool both their
financial and political resources when they
share a house in D.C. Cameron is optimistic
and determined, Vince is opportunistic
and charming, and Jane, is beautiful and
brilliant, but a little romantically clueless.
As these newbies try to learn their way
around the hill, they inevitably run into
professional challenges, personal entanglements
and public humiliations.
After all, if they screw up, the snarky
blog ‘Fools on the Hill’ is there to document
it for the whole wide web. It’s their
first year in D.C., so these three young
Representatives will definitely make a few
mistakes, but hopefully they will learn
a thing or two along the way. Luckily,
they’ve formed their own little ways and
means committee for negotiating life on
the hill. Executive producer Arianna Huffington
lends her experience and pointed
political-insider wit to this comedy that is
part West Wing, part Grey’s Anatomy. Experience
both the private and public lives
of politicians when creator Greg Malins
(How I Met Your Mother) pulls back the
curtain on America’s elected officials.”
What did they leave out? Bill Maher
turns up in a brief cameo as he offers up
a “new rule” at Jane’s expense, as she fell
asleep during a press conference.
The plot in a nutshell: Jane Keathly
(Sarah Chalke) is late for her first day as a
Congresswoman from the state of Washington.
It’s not exactly her first stumbling
block as a politician though: the former
corporate COO cashed in her stock options
to run for Congress, only to have her
husband come out of the closet after she
won. Minnesota freshman Cameron Graham
(Tommy Dewey) conversely couldn’t
get there early enough as he’s bursting at
the seams to take on his new role. It’s his
zealousness that both annoys and endears
him to Vince Rapp (Ben Lawson), an
Arizona Republician who shows him the
ropes and teach him his “rules” on the
Hill.
First and foremost, it turns out most
Congressmen share apartments to save
money. Vince and Cameron subsequently
agree to be roommates while Jane, who’s
been sleeping in her office because she
can’t find an affordable apartment, winds
up the third in their house. Before long,
each of our heroes establishes their
respective modus operandi: Vince is
unabashedly in it for the perks, whether
it be the golden limousines that take him
to parties or the buffets that allow him to
stock up on food for the week; Cameron is
the sunny idealist who actually reads the
bills put up for vote; and Jane has a mess
of a personal life as she sleeps with her
attentive assistant, Adam (Taran Killam),
harbors a smoldering crush on President
Obama and struggles with her “gay husband
lady” moniker.
Ask Heather: Real relationship advice
Hi, my name is
Heather and I’ve
been a relationship
expert laying it out
since 1972. I know
how to handle men
and I know how to
handle women, so
no matter who you
are I’m happy to
help with relationship
advice for you.
Just send your questions
to Heather@
Semotimes.com
Dear Heather,
I thought I could
work this out on my
own and I have tried for a long time but
its now come to the point where I need
some really good advice. I have been
with my boyfriend for 3 years, we live
together, we have a child together. I’m
not the jealous type and he works in a
business that requires him to be out in
the evenings, and so I trusted him. I’ve
had my suspicions for a long time and
was just hoping I was wrong but I know
he has been cheating on me. I know
who she is, and there has been more
than one. I love him but
I just don’t know what to
do. Please help.
Confused
Dear Confused (aka
Pathetic),
Work what out? He’s a
liar and a cheater that has
absolutely no respect for
you! Of course there
has been more than
one, there have probably
been double digits,
because he knows
he can do this and get
away with it and you
will sit at home and
raise his baby. This
is where you realize
the most important
thing in your life is
your child, do you
really want him/
her to grow up and
believe this is how a
“normal” relationship
functions? Change
the locks, throw his
stuff in the front yard, and only after 2
weeks of groveling (and he will grovel
if you give him time to miss you) you
can answer a phone call. It’s up to you
from that point to figure out if he’s been
“scared” enough to change to keep you,
and if he hasn’t, get out there and find a
man who thinks more of you than that.
Good Luck!
xoxo, Heather
