• MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN •
We are all excited
about a new academic year
and the energy generated by
the return of our students.
To those of you here for
the first time, please do not
hesitate to bring your questions
or issues to our faculty, staff and administrators.
For those returning and beginning to
think of life after law school, let us know how
we can help. Our Center for Career Services, for
example, has resources and staff devoted to helping
you pursue a rewarding professional career.
Law school is the beginning of that career.
You are part of a dynamic academic community
and heritage of excellence in the legal profession.
I just returned from a convention of the
American Bar Association, which four of our
graduates have led as President.
We encourage you to participate in student
organizations that strike your interest. One
advantage of this large law school is its variety
of student organizations and academic programs.
We know “one size does not fit all” law students.
I am personally interested in your input. Our
institution has a strong tradition of excellence.
We also are committed to continuous quality
improvement, and your suggestions are vital to
that process. Please attend our “Brown Bag
with the Dean” luncheons, come by my office,
or e-mail me your ideas at mills@law.ufl.edu.
We also encourage you to talk with any of our
Associate Deans. Good luck. Welcome, and
welcome back.
— Jon L. Mills, Dean
in and fill out an information card for alumni matching.
Students also are invited, but not required, to sit
in on the Council meeting at 10:30 a.m. To attend,
Law Students Attend Job Fair
The Southeastern Minority Job Fair (SEMJF),
held each year in Atlanta, is one of the largest job
fairs in the country, bringing together more than
100 employers from all over the country with law
students from 40-plus Southeastern law schools.
F LAL AW • N EWSLETTER O F THE F REDRIC G. L EVIN C OLLEGE O F L AW • A UGUST 2 0 , 2 0 0 1
Fifty UF students attended the fair in early August,
and participated in 166 interviews over the two-day
event.
UF students interviewed with law firms, corporations,
government agencies and public interest
organizations. They gained valuable interviewing
experience, met students from across the Southeast,
and may even obtain jobs with firms or organizations
they may not have been able to meet any
other way.
“SEMJF is an excellent opportunity to meet and
interview with numerous employers and interact
with students from other law schools. It provides a
great first-hand experience for students to learn
exactly what employers are looking for in future
employees,” said Taneka Campbell (3L).
Many students spent hours preparing their
resumes, filling out forms, researching the firms
and preparing for interviews. Interviewing at a job
fair can be hectic and overwhelming, but it is an
experience students never forget.
Dispute Resolution Forum to Honor Former Justice Overton
A reception for former
Florida Supreme Court Justice
Ben F. Overton Friday, Sept.
7, will kickoff the Second
Annual Upchurch Watson &
White Dispute Resolution
Symposium organized by the
UF College of Law. The
Overton event begins at 5
p.m., at the University of
Overton
Florida Hotel and Conference
Center, and the symposium starts at 8:30 a.m.
Saturday, Sept. 8.
Overton served on the Florida court for more
than 24 years, including as Chief Justice from 1976-
1978. After stepping down, he joined the mediation
firm of Upchurch Watson & White in 1999, and
served as chair of the American Bar Association
section on dispute resolution in 2000-2001.
Among topics to be discussed during the halfday
session are how to design client’s mediation to
increase chances for success, tactics for dealing with
tough clients and opponents during negotiation, and
effective legal representation in mediation. The
symposium ends with an open forum panel
discussion.
“Information for both the practitioner and the
mediator will be featured, with emphasis on the
practitioner,” according to John J. Upchurch IV of
Upchurch Watson & White in Daytona Beach.
“These days, 95 percent of cases are resolved in
mediation instead of trial. Yet 95 percent of legal
education focuses on trial performance. This
symposium is one effort to correct that imbalance.”
The annual symposium and other programs at
the Institute for Dispute Resolution (IDR) at the law
school are made possible through a $100,000
endowment by the Upchurch Watson & White firm,
which has offices in Daytona Beach and Maitland.
According to Upchurch, formal training for
lawyers has not been widely available regarding representing
clients in mediation. He and his colleagues
view the symposium and IDR as means of offering
information on this relatively new field.
Panelists and speakers scheduled to appear in
addition to Overton and Upchurch are Professor
Don Peters, IDR director; Rodney Max, director of
the Sirote & Permutt Mediation Center,
Birmingham, Ala.; John Wagner, director of the
Law School Tops in Technology
By Sanjeev Sirpal, Editorial Assistant
Manager of Computing Services
Mark Bergeron spoke this summer
at the Computer Assisted Legal
Instruction (CALI) conference held at
Suffolk University in Boston. The
500-plus attendees represented
most law schools in the U.S. and
abroad.
• INSIDE THE LAW SCHOOL •
Bergeron
“Compared to other public sector universities,
we (UF) appeared to be among the top percent in
technology and in being able to provide computerrelated
technical services,” said Bergeron. “By listening
to other conference speakers and asking
questions, I got the impression we have solved
problems other law schools have not, and are
doing things technologically that many law
schools have not even entertained.”
Bergeron cited as an example the College of
Law’s installation of wireless Internet access capabilities
for both indoor and outdoor use.
“We’re putting it in places students would want
to sit down with a laptop and use it,” said
Bergeron. “Places like the libraries, cafeteria and
picnic benches outside. Professor can even teach
class outside if they want to, complete with
Internet capabilities.”
The school is using the IEEE (Institute of
Electrical and Electronics Engineers) recognized
standard for wireless Internet cards, the 802.11b.
This way, students can not only access the Internet
at the law school, but also anywhere else that supports
the card.
The College of Law began a project this summer
to completely re-wire the law school from
current 4 and 16 Megabyte per second Token Ring
connections to a 100 Megabyte per second
switched Ethernet connection to every desktop.
“The infrastructure that supports it is capable of
supporting a one Gigabit per second transfer rate,”
said Bergeron. “We planned for the future. If we
get requests for something like video conferencing,
the backbone is capable of supporting that.”
Bergeron graduated with a B.S. in electrical
engineering from Auburn University, spent two
years as a teleprocessing engineer at the Northeast
Regional Data Center in Gainesville, and was
named Manager of College of Law Computing
Services in 1986.
Information — Get It, Share It, Here’s How
Welcome back, or to, the law school. Our first piece of advice to
you during this busy time is to use this newsletter, the College Web
site, bulletin boards and student message folders to keep abreast of
information and activities...and to share your news with others.
Following are the most common ways to acquire and disseminate information:
• This newsletter, FlaLaw, is the law school’s official outlet for information and announcements. It is printed
each Monday while school is in session, and issues also are posted on the College Web site, www.law.ufl.edu.
(See at left for submission information.)
• The law school funds a student newsletter for articles and editorials, The Docket. Contact the John Marshall
Bar Association, 392.0498, for information.
• Julie Barnes (392.9238, barnes@law.ufl.edu) in the Dean’s Office posts events to the law school’s Web page
Calendar of Events and “pop-up” computer calender. To have events, conferences or group activities posted,
send her the activity’s name, date and time, address/room, any additional information to be posted, and
where you want it posted — the law school Calendar of Events, pop-up or both. If it is to be posted on the
Calendar of Events Web page, tell her if you want it posted under more than one category (Alumni,
Conferences, etc.). If you do not specify a category, it will be posted under the month of the event only.
• Our searchable Web site, www.law.ufl.edu, is updated frequently with information and links to items related
to the law school and law study — including events and news, student services, books for sale, rooms to rent,
departments and centers, organizations, faculty information and legal resources.
• Our e-mail newsletter, UFLAW E-News, is sent to students, faculty, staff, alumni and others who subscribe.
(Directions for subscribing are on the College Web site.) Send submissions to flalaw@law.ufl.edu.
• Don’t forget to check the electronic sign board at the entrance to the Legal Information Center (Library),
and events bulletin board on the Holland Hall Concourse. To post a notice on the electronic board, contact
Student Affairs. To post one on the bulletin board, submit it to JMBA a week or two before the event.
• UF Lawyer magazine is published each fall and spring, and your Student Handbook and Prospectus provide
a wealth of information on the law school.
