ASTM "American Society for Testing and Materials", DIN "Deutsches Institut für Normung" und ISO
To optimize materials performance and life time of a component, it is primordial to control and analyze the
wear problem by the understanding the failure mechanisms of the worn part in order to determine the
remedial steps.
Tribology is defined as the study of interacting moving surfaces and the science and technology of wear,
friction and lubrication. Tribological responses of materials involve mainly the tribological system which
consists of four main elements:
1. body
2. counter body
3. interfacial medium
4. surrounding medium
which undergo combined tribological stresses: i) relative speed, ii) ambient temperature, iii) normal load,
iv) time or loading, v) lifetime.
Wear occurs by mechanical and/or chemical means and is generally accelerated by frictional heating.
The principal of wear mechanisms is shown in fig 2* , ** and includes the following:
a) Adhesive wear occurs because of adhesion at asperity contacts at the interface. These contacts are
sheared by sliding which result in detachment of a fragment from one surface to another surface (fig 2-a).
b) Abrasive wear occurs when asperities of a rough, hard surface or hard particles slide on a softer
surface, and damage the interface by plastic deformation or fracture in the case of ductile and brittle
material (fig 2-b).
c) Fatigue wear occurs when a solid surface caused by fatigue fracture arising loading stresses in
frictional cycles (fig 2-c).
d) Corrosive wear occurs when a tribochemical reaction at the contact interface is accelerated (fig 2-d)
e) Erosive wear due to the interaction between that surface and a fluid, a multicomponent fluid, or
impinging liquid or solid particles leading to different modes of failure (fig 2-e).
