thebackPagecolor cordovan Cordovan takes its name from the city of Cordoba, Spain, where the production of cordovan leather was fi rst practiced by the Visigoths in the seventh century. Real cordovan leather must be made from the skin of a horse's posterior rather than from a cow. The circular 'shells' are then tanned by a natural vegetable treatment process for about six months. This requires knowhow, excellent technique, and unbelievable patience. Cordovan is extremely rare. There are only two tanneries in the world that produce shell cordovan leather, one of them being the Horween Leather Company in Chicago. Cordovan leather is a very expensive material due to the rarity and quality of its production. A pair of cordovan shoes will often sell for between $400 and $500. The leather is tanned The Cordovan bee These are a subset of the Italian bees – the most popular bee in North American. These, as all of the commercial bees, are gentle and good producers. In theory you could have a Cordovan in any breed, since it's technically just a color. They are slightly more gentle, slightly more likely to rob and quite striking to look at. They have no black on them and look very yellow at fi rst sight. Looking closely you see that where the Italians normally have black legs and head, they have a purplish brown legs and head. source: www.bushfarms.com What is cordovan? by hand over a period of six months. Clearly, a great deal of human labor goes into producing a small amount of this luxurious leather and, so, to account for the work, the price is high. Make sure when you purchase cordovan leather that it is indeed made from horse hide and NOT just a reference to the color of the dye used. Normally cow hide is used in this procedure. A horse provides two 'shells', which is just enough for a pair of shoes. A single shell isn’t long enough to form a seamless belt, so genuine shell cordovan belts will always be pieced. The most non-porous leather known, shell cordovan is distinguished by its lustrous waxy fi nish, superior durability, and suppleness that readily conforms to the shape of the wearer’s foot. The shells are put through a natural, vegetable tanning process, then handstained, glazed, and fi nished over a six-month period that demands the measured pace of craftsmanship and patience.
