welcome
March is shaping up to be
an important month for
sporting and cultural events
across the Asia-Pacifi c region
and an exciting time to travel
on the Jetstar network.
That’s the beauty of low fares,
they create opportunities for all
of us to take our passions “on
This month we will welcome
thousands of sports fans
Grand Prix and north to Hong
Kong for the International
Rugby Sevens tournament.
As the northern hemisphere
moves into spring, Japan’s
stunning cherry blossom
season begins with festivals
taking place in popular Jetstar
Japan destinations such
as Tokyo and Osaka from
now until May. This is an
The festivals in Tokyo may
be the perfect reason for
between the two cities by the
end of the month.
Other new routes joining
the growing Jetstar network
this month include Fukuoka
tash aw
London-based Malaysian author Tash
Aw tells us about setting the scene and
creating the characters for his third
novel Five Star Billionaire
Q: WHAT’S THE INSPIRATION
BEHIND YOUR LATEST BOOK?
A: I was travelling in China and
kept meeting Malaysians and
Singaporeans who lived there — in
fact, a huge number of foreigners
from all over the world seemed to
have made their lives in China. So
I decided to write a novel about
people who leave their home
countries to start afresh somewhere
else — but what they fi nd is that
their past matters to them more
than their present. I wanted to show
how we hang on to dreams forever,
even if they are totally empty.
Q: WHAT KIND OF EXPECTATIONS
DO YOU HAVE FOR THIS BOOK?
A: At this point, none. When I sit
down to write a new novel, I have
very simple expectations — to do
something new and interesting, that
I’ve never done before, to challenge
and entertain myself and my
readers. Anything else that happens
— sales, prizes, reviews, etc — is
beyond my control.
Q: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE
SHANGHAI AS THE SETTING?
A: It seemed to be the most
international of Chinese cities, a
place with a history and tradition of
welcoming foreigners. It’s the city
in China that I know best, where I
feel most at home, and I met many
fascinating — sometimes eccentric
characters — [while living] there.
Shanghai is a walking city — it has
an intimacy and romance that is at
odds with its size. Sometimes you
just know when a city will lend itself
to a novel.
Q: DO YOU WEAVE YOUR
PERSONAL EXPERIENCES
INTO YOUR STORIES OR BASE
CHARACTERS IN YOUR BOOKS
ON THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU?
A: Yes, inevitably I do both,
but I also add a healthy dose of
imagination to the mix. Real-life
situations and characters often feel
fl at if recorded too faithfully — the
job of a novelist is to make these
people and settings come alive
through fi ction.
Q: OUT OF THE FIVE
CHARACTERS IN THE BOOK, WHO
IS YOUR FAVOURITE?
A: That’s a very unfair question!
There’s a part of me in all fi ve
characters, so I feel very strange
choosing just one — but I’ll go
for Phoebe; because she is the
most ambitious, yet also the
most fragile.
Q: TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORK.
A: I focus on social practice in a
context of daily life... installations
that represent relations between
historical memory and available
information. For example, in my
Tsuo Chen Man project, I explore
the relations between pre-history
and anthropology in Taiwan.
Q: HOW’S THE TAIWAN ART
SCENE AT THE MOMENT?
A: Taiwan’s complex history is very
eff ective for creating art. I think
the impact of multiculturalism in
Taiwan also provides a diff erent
view of the world. This is an
important period of repositioning
contemporary art in Taiwan’s
relations with the rest of Asia.
Q: WHERE DO YOU SEE
TAIWANESE ART HEADED?
A: Taiwanese artists need to
participate more in relationships
with other Asian countries. Events
such as the Asian Biennale, the
Expo and exhibiting in galleries
are all ways for Taiwanese art and
artists to fi nd their own voice.
Made-to-measure cheongsams
remain a symbol of elegant
Chinese culture in Malaysia
From the 1940s to the 1960s,
custom-made cheongsams
were popular among women in
Malaysia. This traditional Chinese
dress was standard attire for staff
members of local banks and
retailers, among other organisations.
It’s no wonder, then, that skilful
tailors and pattern-cutters — many
of whom had migrated from China
and Singapore — were prevalent
back then. They became masters at
producing top-notch designs with
high-collared tunics, frog buttons
shearing diagonally across the
décolletage, nipped-in waists and
darts on the bust to accentuate a
woman’s natural assets.
When Westernised styles
became de rigueur in the ’70s, the
appeal of handmade cheongsams
began to diminish. The latter was
also expensive, due to its labourintensive
and time-consuming
nature. Subsequently, many
specialised tailors closed down and
only a small number remain today.
One such survivor is Kong Yoon
Yoon, who, in 1973, established
Emerald Brilliant Boutique. From
pattern-cutting and tedious
hemming to producing trimmings
by hand and creating the piping
from a piece of plain cotton cloth,
Kong was known to single-handedly
complete a cheongsam within
two days — aided only by a Singer
sewing machine.
Petaling Jaya, Selangor, tel: +60 (3) 7876 5072,
With increasing demand, Emerald
has introduced an in-house atelier
with 40 staff members — comprising
tailors, pattern-cutters and buttonmakers
who also do embroidery and
patchwork. These days, a custommade
cheongsam (from MYR300;
S$122) takes only a day to complete.
Kong begins by sketching
a particular style before the
customer’s measurements are taken
to achieve “an equal balance and
proportion at the top and bottom
half of a cheongsam,” says the
vivacious 64-year-old. The selected
material is then ironed properly to
allow the drafting and cutting of the
outfi t’s pattern, as well as the sewing
process, to be executed eff ectively.
The future of Emerald will be in
the hands of her son Ryan Sim, who
has been learning from his mother
for the last 10 years. Sim intends
to minimise the current orders for
customised cheongsams and off er
off -the-rack designs. “Custom-made
cheongsams will then cost
higher, from MYR600,” says the
28-year-old.
something new? And how do we
stay true to our own style of music?”
While some might see it as a form
of restriction, the band members of
Mr. see it as a challenge that drives
them to do better. “It’s a good thing!
Creativity with some limitations is
way better because you can’t be too
self-centred,” MJ explains.
Now that they are one of the
leading Cantorock groups bringing
band music back to mainstream,
they seem to be putting more
thought into the kind of music they
make. “Everyone can be an artiste,
but now that people are buying our
albums, we need to think of them
— how our music connects to them.
It takes more time to make this
kind of music, but the music
comes out better,” MJ says.
As guitarist Ronny put it, they
want their albums and their
music to be more inspiring.
Whenever they get together to
jam, they share observations.
“We share what we see, what has
The songs just come naturally
RONNY:
I love Thailand. They have the best
people I have met so far. Even its big
city is a comfortable and reasonable
place to live in. One day I would love to
go to Fiji. I expect it to be an out-ofthe-world
experience, trouble-free
and all.
MJ:
I like Osaka. Now that I’m older, I like
rustic, cultural stuff . And I think people
who visit Hong Kong have to visit
Temple Street. It is just so exciting and
so… Hong Kong! You can buy cheap
stuff there. You can get local food like
stir-fried clams and deep-fried squid.
Even if you go there really late, there’s
importance. A place we have to
Interestingly, they usually jam
in English.
English? “Yes, English.
Cantonese has way too many
intonations, which makes it
really diffi cult to jam in. You
need to fi nd the right words
that go with the tunes and all,”
released their new album New
their New Beginning Live
For the quintet, it just feels
right to be playing music
ball game, you can’t do it without
the team,” Tom says. And when
times gets rough? “You need
to compromise, think about
how the others feel. It’s very
complicated, just like dating,” he
says half-jokingly.
While vocalist Alan dreams
about doing a concept album
that Mr. can release an English
TIM ROCK WITH YOKO HIGASHIDE
The Philippine archipelago consists of 7,107
islands — oftentimes even more at low tide.
There’s a new awareness of the value and
beauty of the reef and extra care is being strongly
encouraged. This can be seen clearly now in Coron
and the Calamian Islands around the island of
Busuanga, all part of the province of Palawan.
Nesting sea turtles, grazing dugongs, coral and odd
sealife all come to the fore in this scenic region.
Japan’s Okinawa has 49 inhabited and 111
uninhabited islands. The name Okinawa means
“rope in the open sea”, an apt description of this
long stretch of islands between mainland Japan and
Taiwan. Nineteen percent of the prefecture land is
designated as natural parks, including the Iriomote-
Ishigaki National Park. Here, massive manta rays
glide through the sea, whale sharks occasionally
visit, along with seasonal humpback whales.
Both children and adults are
When Su-Ann Wong opened Palate
KL was hungry for some soul, more
creativity and colour. Palate Palette
puts a twist on everything from the
drinks (the Oh Boi cocktail mixes
calamansi and preserved plum
(the LGBT sandwich is a classic BLT
Established in 1965 by Lim and
his late mother, Balmoral Bakery
was originally in Holland Village.
The fi rst baker had previously
worked for the famed Robinsons’
department store café, frequented
by the British expatriate community.
And Lim picked up the making of
authentic English pastries from him.
In 1983, the bakery relocated to a
small shop in the Clementi housing
estate. It continues to attract locals, as
well as customers from countries such
as Britain, Malaysia and Indonesia,
who all fl ock to Balmoral for its
traditional chicken pies, along with
cream, custard and curry puff s.
But it’s getting harder to keep
the tradition alive. “Nowadays,
young people prefer to work in airconditioned
offi ces. No one wants to
work in front of a hot oven for long
hours,” Lim laments.
This is why, for the past few
years, he has been busy preparing
his cousin, Catherine Chiam, to
take over the family-run bakery
when he retires. “Many of our
customers ask us why we don’t
expand the business,” says his petite
baker, “But we can’t. Not because
six, many of whom are middle-aged
or silver-haired master bakers.
Started by Chew’s father-in-law, Tan
Suan Thin, the self-taught baker
and founder of the bakery, has
retired and left the running of the
bakery to Chew and her son, both
trained bakers.
Preparations begin at 3.30am
daily and the last cakes come out of
the oven at about 1pm. In addition
20 diff erent types of buns fi lled with
various ingredients, from red bean
paste and coconut, to luncheon
meats and vegetables.
Because everything is made
fresh daily, anything unsold goes to
Food from the Heart, a local charity
that collects leftover goods from
bakeries and distributes them to
the needy. “The costs have gone up
a lot, but we can’t raise our prices
too much because many of our
customers who stay around here are
not so well-off ,” Chew says.
The long hours, meagre profi ts
and high costs nearly made her
throw in the towel in 2012. But she
was reluctant to see the family
business, which her father-in-law
had painstakingly built up for close
to half a century, disappear.
Everything is
made FRESH
DAILY...anything
unsold goes to a
local CHARITY
Like Chew, fellow secondgeneration
bakery owner Lai
Chee Peng also wants to keep his
family’s traditional bread shop
going for as long as possible.
Sing Hon Loong is one of the
oldest bakeries in Singapore and
is open 24 hours. The previous
owner had been running the
bakery since the 1950s, before
selling the business to Lai’s
uncle in the 1960s.
Anna Chew prepares
a special order at
Sembawang Confectionery
while a baker prepares
ingredients for making
butter cream cakes

“We couldn’t bear to throw away
the old signboard left behind by
the former owner because there
was so much history in it,” Lai
explains with a laugh, “So we put
our signboard next to the old one.”
But it’s not the only piece of history
that’s been carefully preserved in
this 60-year-old bakery. Everything,
from the fl oor and wall tiles, to the
wooden cabinets and shelves, as
well as counter tops, are as old as
the shop itself.
Its team of experienced breadmakers
produce more than 1000
loaves of blackhead bread every day,
in addition to baguettes, buns and
“We can only
FIND the old,
FAMILIAR taste
HERE”
Lai Chee Peng and his
wife bake bread and
buns fresh everyday at
Sing Hon Loong
rolls. The loaves of bread are baked
in a blazing hot furnace and emerge
from the oven with charred tops,
which are sliced off to yield soft,
pillowy white bread.
Most of the loaves are supplied
to eateries and restaurants, but a
portion is set aside for loyal walkin
customers. In fact, business
is so good that Sing Hon Loong
sells out its breads every single
day. “I will continue to carry on
the family business as long as I
can,” says 50-year-old Lai, before
adding resignedly, “But it’s unlikely
Once reserved for the wealthy few, the game of golf is fast
changing. Accessibility continues to grow, thanks to new
technology and an increase in eco-friendly courses
WORDS: MARIE MONOZCA
The game of golf is fast
changing, as are the
demands of its legions s of
followers. Golf course designers
and equipment engineers are now
paying closer attention
to the changing times.
Nowadays, golf
course architects are
increasingly conscious
of the impact these
“playgrounds” have on
the environment. As a
result, in their designs,
they focus more on sustainability by
making use of native materials and
even selective clearing of trees prior
to construction. To further optimise
the effi ciency of water usage, most
irrigation is conducted at night
while sprinkling takes place in the
mornings and afternoons, at levels
that depend on rainfall or other
water sources.
Colin Montgomerie
“Now that the OLYMPIC GAMES
will include golf in 2016, this will
help grow the game in Asia
especially in INDIA and CHINA”
A special type of grass that
requires less water in terms of
volume and quality is also being
widely used. Furthermore, new grass
species are planted to withstand
the most adverse weather and
environmental conditions, yes,
including the strongest of typhoons.
Designers are also mitigating
the impact of fertilisers and
golf » focus
Montgomerie Links
pesticides by using improved
strategies, including integrated
pest management techniques and
organic methods.
One who supports all of these
initiatives is Scottish
golfi ng legend, Colin
Montgomerie. The
49-year-old has under
his belt a growing
portfolio of golf
courses all over the
world, especially in
Asia, where the game
is enjoying phenomenal growth.
One of his masterpieces is the
eponymous Montgomerie Links in
Vietnam. Located in the country’s
Central Coast and a few minutes
from Da Nang International Airport,
it’s one of Asia’s most awarded golf
courses. “I primarily work with
the natural lay or contours of the
land. As with many great Scottish
59

60
focus » golf
courses, my designs are dictated
by nature,” says Montgomerie, who
has won 41 golf tournaments during
his career.
As a golfer, Montgomerie has
the practical experience and
understanding of the game. Also,
his appreciation of nature could be
the reason his beautifully crafted
courses are being recognised the
world over; and many a developer
seeks his stamp of approval on their
golf courses.
It is this pursuit of being highly
sustainable that guides Monty and
his team in every project. Thus, they
draw up every blueprint carefully
and seek to take best advantage of a
site’s natural features.
“GOLF is not just
for the LONG-
HITTERS but also
for those who want
their SHORT games
challenged”
the putter & driver
In the olden times, golf clubs were
made of several diff erent types of
wood. Nowadays, they are infused
with the latest technology and built
with titanium and other modern
material. As golf equipment
technology becomes even more
advanced, this has allowed even the
social golfer to gain much skill. This
has resulted in greater distances in
their shots.
Golf equipment designers are not
resting on their laurels and continue
to fi nd innovative ways to make the
game more enjoyable and rewarding
to the player. For example,
TaylorMade’s latest R1 driver can
be tuned 168 diff erent ways to
specifi cally fi t a player’s swing to
optimise distance and accuracy.
Its “Loft-Sleeve Technology” off ers
12-loft sleeve settings to deliver a
4-degree range of lofts, meaning the
golfer can play anywhere from an 8-
to 12-degree driver.
“Off ering a wide range of loft
settings is imperative, because
Montgomerie Links
Golf Course
our research indicates that 80% of
golfers are playing the wrong
loft, which costs them distance,”
says Dr. Benoit Vincent, chief
technical offi cer of TaylorMade.
“The R1 off ers 12 positions to help
golfers fi nd the loft that delivers
maximum distance.”
In order to keep up with modern
equipment, golf course designers
now also need to keep golfers
suffi ciently challenged. To which
designers like Montgomerie has
the answer: “If there is land to work
with, I am for lengthening courses.
But I always stress that golf is not
just for the long-hitters but also for
those who want their short games
challenged and honed. Hollows,
water hazards and bunkers all lend
to a more demanding course.”
While these add to the diffi culty
of the game, the latest golf course
design trends are seeing these
challenges built into the natural
landscape of the site the way Mother
Nature intended it to be.
Find out what’s happening with Jetstar this month
Barathan Pasupathi,
CEO, Jetstar Asia Airways
CEO note
I am really pleased to announce
that Jetstar Asia has been
awarded the IATA Operational
Safety Audit (IOSA) certifi cation,
making it the fi rst low-cost carrier
in South-East Asia to be certifi ed
by the International Air Transport
Authority (IATA). The audit
covers eight areas of operational
safety, and Jetstar Asia cleared
more than 900 standards and
recommended practices. Safety
has always been our top priority,
and the registration reinforces
our commitment to delivering the
highest standards of safety for our
passengers and crew. Thanks for
fl ying with us today and
travel safe!
We are the
fi rst low-cost
carrier in SEA
to get IOSA
certifi cation
Are you flying on Singapore’s
fi rst Sharklet-equipped A320?
Jetstar Asia has welcomed its fi rst
Sharklet-equipped Airbus A320 to its
fl eet, making us the fi rst Singapore
carrier with the new fuel-saving wing
tip device. The aircraft entered service
during Lunar New Year and is the
fi fth new A320 to join the airline as
part of Jetstar Asia’s fl eet renewal
programme which kicked off in
October 2012. Made of lightweight
composite materials, the 2.4-metretall
Sharklets improve the A320’s
aerodynamics, which in turn reduces
fuel consumption and emissions,
resulting in fuel savings of up to four
per cent. The wing-tip devices also
enhance take-off performance, raise
optimum fl ight altitude, deliver an
improved rate-of-climb and a lowering
of engine maintenance costs.* Jetstar
Asia will be taking delivery of two
more Sharklet-equipped A320s before
the end of the year.
HOW DO
YOU KNOW
WHERE WE
ARE WHEN
WE’RE ABOVE
THE CLOUDS?
First offi cer Ceri Williams
says: “We have a host of
navigation equipment onboard
but probably the two most
important are the Global
Positioning System and the
Inertial Referencing System.
Satellites positioned in space
are fi tted with very accurate
clocks that transmit the time.
By measuring the diff erence
between the time received from
the satellite and the real time the
system can measure how far the
aircraft is from the satellite. By
doing this with many satellites,
we can pinpoint exactly where
we are in the sky. The IRS
works by measuring movement.
Basically we tell the system
where the aircraft is before we
start and the system measures
any movement. Close your eyes
and ask a friend to move you
from the spot you are standing
to a diff erent place. I’ll bet you
will be able to picture where you
are. This is because your inner
ear can detect movement much
like an airplane… and that is how
we get you to your destination.
your questions
Lena Chia, customer
service manager
“My favourite destination is Osaka.
I love the food there, dishes such
as takoyaki, ramen and sashimi.
Besides food, shopping is good
at Rinku Town, and I really enjoy
Universal Studios.”
I ensure that
passengers are
able to enjoy the
entitlements they
purchase online
or onboard
Yvonne Tan, infl ight
services manager
What I do: I take care of the
products and services that we carry
onboard Jetstar. My daily routine
is to ensure that all fl ights depart
with the correct loading of food
and beverage, duty-free items,
equipment, new product launches
and the latest copy of Jetstar Asia
magazine. I ensure that passengers
are able to enjoy the entitlements
they purchase online or onboard.
To do so, I have to train the crew
for them to be able to carry out
their job well. I help to standardise
and maintain the professional
image of our cabin crew, making
sure that they look their best
at all times — even after an
overnight fl ight.

Destination: Hong Kong
With our bags packed and ready to
go, my sister and I were ready for an
adventure! After our smooth journey
with Jetstar, we arrived in Hong Kong
and it was time to explore.
Stanley Bay, our fi rst destination
was defi nitely a treat with the
gorgeous promenade and waterfront
views. We then visited the Avenue
of Stars and posed with Bruce Lee;
adventured around Ocean Park
enjoying every ride; and walked into
the glitz and glam of the highest bar
in the world at the Ritz-Carlton. The
Star Ferry ride over to Tsim Sha Tsui
was beautiful with the amazing
skyline and laser show.
When cycling around Tai Po it
was great to see many locals and
riding the Ngong Ping 360 cable
cars up to the Big Buddha felt like
we were in the clouds. Hopping
over to Tai O Village on Lantau
Island was an experience as we
walked past the stilt houses,
bantered with the lively fi sher folk
and ate delicious steamed squid.
The constant bustle on the
streets, the city lights, friendly
locals and unlimited adventures
make Hong Kong absolutely
fantastic. During our week we
experienced the many sides that
Hong Kong has to off er. Thank
you Jetstar for the cheap and
excellent fares!
Destination: Taipei
When someone mentions Taiwan,
the fi rst thing that most people would
think of is Taipei. Taipei has many
famous tourist attractions such as
Yang Ming Shan, Shilin Night Market
and Taipei 101. However, I went
to Alishan and lived with the Tsou
Aboriginal people for the entire fi ve
weeks! Initially, I was a little afraid,
as it was my fi rst time travelling
alone. However, my fears were totally
unfounded. When I went to Saviki
(Shan-Mei) village in Alishan, the
locals were very welcoming and
always willing to lend a helping hand!
I formed many friendships with
not only the Taiwanese locals, but
also with other foreigners who were
travelling around Taiwan as well.
To anyone who wants to travel to
Taiwan, I would highly recommend
spending some time interacting
with the locals. This trip was truly
memorable and I would like to thank
Jetstar for giving me this opportunity!
about the competition
Every issue, up to 20 lucky passengers with winning travel
stories will be rewarded with a S$500 travel voucher in $100
denominations (suitable for use on all Jetstar fl ights).
If you would like to have a shot at this opportunity,
tell us about a recent Jetstar Asia trip. Stories are not to exceed
300 words and must be accompanied by three photos (300dpi
minimum). Send in your entries to us at fanclub@jetstarasia.com.
QBA, of course! Sometimes I like to
have a good drink at TwentyOne in
Changkat or at Luna Bar.
Best local nature spot
or park
I like Perdana Botanical Garden,
as although it’s in the heart of the
city, it still off ers the serenity being
surrounded by all that green.
Most beautiful view in
your city
For me, it will have to be the Petronas
Twin Towers, especially at night.
Where to go if you want
to party
I would say Vertigo, especially for the
electronic fl oor, however I realised
that I really need to be much younger
for that!
Best place to see
live sport
I like to watch good football games
and do this mainly at Splash here at
the Westin KL, as it’s a beautiful spot
with a big screen — I can always jump
in the pool if the match is boring.
Most unique tourism
experience
Explore the jungles of Malaysia — I
believe there are a few great little
adventurous spots.
Take the circle train around Yangon
the local teashops.
Best day trip from the city
Bago, 90km from Yangon. Here, you’ll
fi nd the Shwethalyaung Buddha, the
second largest reclining buddha in the
world. The second must-see attraction
is the Shwemawdaw Paya, a stupa that,
having been rebuilt after earthquakes,
currently stands at 375 feet, making it
the tallest in Myanmar.
Best place for
Kandawgyi Park, an oasis of calm in
the middle of Yangon.
Best date restaurant
Le Planteur Restaurant, one of
Yangon’s top restaurants, is situated
on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road, a short
Best place to relax
Inya Day Spa on Inya Road in
Best local festival
Best place for
the place to go for menswear, Tokyo
and Istanbul for shoes, bags and
accessories. Talad Rot Fai is best for
vintage items and antiques — this
night market is set up on Saturday and
Sunday nights close to Chatuchak.
Best date restaurant
Issaya Siamese Club, run by chef Ian
wooden house surrounded by
gardens and lawns. Serving great
Thai cuisine, this is a great spot for an
Best restaurant to try
local produce
If you’re a fan of tofu, fi sh in claypot
or fresh juices, you have to try May.
Just let the staff advise you on what to
order; they have never failed me!
Where to go if you want
to party
To see how the locals party, try a few
of the discos. I would recommend
starting at Lush anytime after 11pm,
then move on to Fuse. It’s a great place
to check out the local dancing talent.
Must-have souvenir
You can’t go to HCMC without buying
a few souvenirs at Ben Thanh Market.
Shopping there is an experience. I
recommend the lacquerware.
Best place to relax
If you want to escape the hustle and
bustle of HCMC and enjoy a nice
glass of wine with a small snack, go
to Vino on Hai Ba Trung Street. It’s
owned by an Australian who brings a
Things to do that will
Get on the back of a Vespa for a
thrilling ride through some back
streets you would never dare go on
your own. You get to taste local street
Sleeping on the aircraft fl oor is
not permitted.
safety demonstration prior to take-off .
In an emergency, the crew will
speak assertively and will require
your cooperation.
Smoking
Government regulations prohibit
smoking on all fl ights. There are smoke
Compression stockings can assist in
preventing swelling of the ankles and feet
and they may improve the blood return to
the body from the lower legs.
During your fl ight, move your legs and
• Remove contact lenses if your eyes
• Use a moisturiser to refresh skin.
Singapore’s veteran actress
shows no sign of slowing
down as she reveals her
passion for travel
Q: WHAT’S THE MOST
MEMORABLE TRIP YOU’VE
TAKEN RECENTLY?
A: I spent a month in the United
States and it was glorious. It was
a special bonding time with my
teenage daughter Shi-An. She’s a
real rollercoaster head and chose
the theme parks in Orlando as
one of the US destinations to go
to. I promised I would sit every
single rollercoaster with her and
I’m proud to announce that I did!
The rest of the trip I stayed in New
Mexico, where my brother and his
family live. All the family time was
precious even though we didn’t do
anything unusual. Our days were
spent talking, watching TV, going
to the supermarket, having family
meals because I brought my 75-yearold
mother along. I loved every
second of it.
Q: DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE
DESTINATION THAT YOU VISIT
OVER AND OVER AGAIN?
A: I love skiing and every year we’ll
take at least one, if not two, trips out
skiing. We’ve been to Europe over
and over again to ski.
One of the main
things I like
about travelling
is the idea of
serendipity
Q: WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT
TRAVELLING?
A: I think I’m one of those people
who’s innately restless and wants
to see, do and experience a lot of
things. Nothing [helps] that better
than travelling and being out of
your comfort zone.
Q: WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE
SEASON TO TRAVEL?
A: I enjoy all sorts of holidays —
summer, winter, spring, autumn.
What I don’t enjoy is air pollution. I’ll
think twice about going somewhere
where the air quality is really bad.
Q: WHAT TYPE OF TRAVELLER
ARE YOU?
A: One of the main things I like about
travelling is the idea of serendipity
— the feeling that anything can
happen. But I don’t want to be
foolishly unprepared, so I try to strike
a balance. Be prepared but don’t be
too rigid, remain calm and accepting.
I don’t like to travel solo but I’m quite
picky about who I travel with. Luckily,
I have some regular travel buddies.
I’m a very light traveller. I once went
on a three-month Butoh workshop in
Japan in the dead of winter with just
a carry-on bag. I have a reputation for
being quite the champion packer in
my family — I can pack a small
bag but still manage to look
quite stylish!
Q: WHICH DESTINATIONS
ON THE JETSTAR ROUTE
DO YOU PLAN TO VISIT
THIS YEAR?
A: I would love to go to
Ho Chi Minh City. I have a
friend who helped open a small
boutique hotel called The Alcove
and I’d love to go there, chill and see
the city with him.
